a social 4, david constantly compares himself to others, focusing on what he doesn't have and in internalizing the feelings of shame that brings. the only way he knows to combat his insecurities is to compete with everyone else, especially with his friends at nyc, to craft an life so perfect so he can "show" them that he's won, and that he is better than them. easily offended, hurt, and humiliated, he's so hypersensitive and emotional, and can be quite dramatic in his displays of these emotions.

Judging Functional Axis: Fi/Te

For the most part, Connor stays as far away from the workings of Waystar Royco as possible. Uninterested in engaging in its politics, he is content to watch from a distance, participating in the decision-making process only when absolutely necessary. He values his autonomy, and so he lives a relatively stress-free life away from his father and his siblings, tending to Austerlitz and being with Willa. Connor, generally, pays no attention to what people think of him. He does what he wants, prioritizing his individual needs at the expense of what his actions might be perceived as. He asserts Willa’s right to take part in family functions because she’s with him and should be treated as part of the family, bringing her to the hospital when Logan’s admitted even though his siblings have less than favorable attitudes towards her, and later, threatening to throw a fit at Shiv’s wedding if she’s not part of the family photograph. Connor also decides to run for President, even though he has no experience whatsoever, caring little about the fact that his family is nothing but disapproving of this decision. However, despite all of this, Connor still cares about what his family thinks of him. He has a glorious inferior-Te meltdown at the RECNY Ball turning into an insufferable bully, fussing over the details of the food and presentation, and shouting at the staff because he doesn’t want his family to be ashamed of him.

Willa makes a joke that Connor doesn’t do anything, because, well, he doesn’t really do anything. He spends most of his time preaching his libertarian agenda to anyone who’ll listen, collecting different parts of Napoleon, and “safeguarding” 30,000 acres of wilderness. He unrealistically dreams of running for President, and with absolutely no knowledge of what that entails, launches his political campaign, which inevitably is met with little to no interest. Connor, in this way, is nothing if not idealistic. He sees potential in Willa, looking past who she is to visualize who they can be together. He insists she can be more than an escort, providing her with everything she needs to be a playwright so she’ll stay with him, and even passionately proposes to her at Caroline’s wedding. Ultimately, Connor likes his comfort; he prefers to remain where he is, rather than to leap into action and get involved in the messy entanglements of the family business.

Sometimes, it is a big dick competition.

The patriarch of the Roy Family, Logan rules his family — and Waystar Royco — with an iron fist. He constantly dominates and brutalizes his children, abusing them, inspiring fear in them, and treating them not as people but as subjects he can control. He’s spent his whole life prioritizing Waystar, building his business from the ground up all by himself, that he resents his children because they don’t understand the value of “hard work.” Logan sees any display of emotion or any show of concern as weak, constantly belittling Kendall for being an addict, coldly criticizing his choice to leave an important business deal to come to Logan’s birthday party, that Roman says, “The only way he’ll respect you is if you try to destroy him.” Logan, at all times, seeks power. He’ll do anything to achieve it, making cruel but rational decisions that ensure that he always, always, wins.

Perceiving Functional Axis: Ni/Se

Logan built Waystar Royco with a singular vision in mind. Decades later, he still runs Waystar Royco with the same vision, inflexible in his approach and single-minded in his relentless pursuit of what he wants. For instance, he refuses to diversify their company assets, buying a collection of local news stations because of his unrealistic desire to control all the news. He has very little respect for how things are done or should be done, refusing to consider any of the alternate possibilities his children constantly suggest to him. He’s a shrewd manipulator who has always pit his children against each other. He’s extremely competent at assessing his children, with an instinctive grasp on their wants, their needs, and their fears, and is skilled at leveraging them to serve his own purposes. Logan can be impatient, erratic, and volatile — it’s what causes Kendall and the others to call a Vote of No Confidence in the first. He especially tends to have violent outbursts when he’s under pressure (throwing abuse; hitting Roman; demeaning Tom, Greg, and Karl so they’ll confess to being the leak.)

Greg severely lacks a moral backbone. His goal, from the beginning, is to secure the most advantageous position for himself — no matter which side that is on (which is why he’s constantly switching sides) — and do whatever they want, so that they may consider him a valuable chess piece in their game. He’s calculating and cunning, always making the most logical choice in a situation (like telling Gerri that Tom’s going to go public with the cruise scandal, or keeping copies of the papers that Tom orders him to destroy) that’s ultimately designed to serve his interests. Greg’s the whipping boy of the Roys, who’s constantly bossed around by everyone, but mostly Tom, who constantly hurls insults at him and makes him do whatever he wants. He has very little ability to relate to people emotionally and lacks social awareness, failing to consider the social appropriateness of his actions, which is why he thinks doing things like trying to make sure that the Roys know that Logan offered him a job before he had his hemorrhage while they’re worried about their father being in the hospital, and suing Greenpeace for his inheritance are reasonable things to do. 

Perceiving Functional Axis: Ne/Si

Greg’s open, pliable, and takes life a little too easily (which gets him fired). But it is this go-with-the-flow attitude that allows him to adapt to new situations as they arise. Greg stays in the periphery, bumbling around and making things up on the spot until people find something for him to do (the nonsensical explanation he offers his mother when he gets fired is high Ne improvisation at its worst, but the way he propositions Logan in his car, telling him that he could take Ewan’s seat and learn to run amusement parks is probably Ne improvisation at its best.) Greg can be really indecisive. For instance, when both Shiv and Roman give him contradictory tasks, Greg calls his mom and tries to puzzle out who he should listen to. Then, he spends a long time trying to decide which of Logan’s plaid shoes he should bring to the hospital. He operates purely on his hunches, choosing to listen to Shiv, and snitching on Tom to Gerri, which end up being the right moves. He navigates Waystar by appearing harmless, gathering profitable information, and waiting for the right time to use it (like telling Kendall he kept some of the evidence from the cruise scandal so Kendall would take care of him). For the most part, Greg likes to stay away from all the action, expressing discomfort when Tom, newly promoted as the head of ATN, brings him along.

Perceiving Functional Axis: Si/Ne

The only solid and reliable presence in Waystar Royco, Gerri primarily operates in the background, offering grounded and sensible counsel to Logan, Kendall, and the others with regards to the management of the company. She is stable and composed no matter what sort of new challenge they’re up against, always considering their problems thoroughly and offering practical advice that addresses the situation in concrete and reasonable ways when compared to the Roys’ more urgent and impulsive approach to things. Gerri is judicious and prudent in a way no one in Waystar is, which is why Roman constantly seeks her out, and even her advice to him is to be patient, gain experience, and work from the bottom-up so his father will listen to him. She works cautiously, scheming discreetly, not in overly wrought out, power-hungry ways like everyone else, but in a conservative way that ensures that no matter what happens or who is in power, her position in the company is secure.

Gerri is starkly pragmatic, safeguarding her own interests and the interests of Waystar above all else. She's cunning, proficient at assessing every situation shrewdly and objectively, and occupies an indispensable position as general counsel, offering rational and efficient solutions to their problems without ever letting sentiment or personal feelings get in the way. Both brutal and effective, Gerri knows how to play the game better than anyone else (except for perhaps Logan). She's especially adept at putting aside ethical and moral considerations to do what needs to be done. For instance, she threatens Tom when he tries to go public with the cruise scandal, telling him this is not the time for him to have a moral conscience.

ted mosby: infj / 2w1 

ted has all these romantic fantasies of getting married. he has it planned to the detail as he tells someone on a first date. he keeps wandering around nyc looking for “the one.” he wants commitment so badly, skipping steps all the time, telling robin he loves her on the first date. he doesn’t see things for what they are, but for what they represent—everything means something (like the swords on the wall symbolize his and marshal’s friendship.) he fe’s all over the place, constantly talking about his feelings (he can’t keep anything inside.) ted has problem with “doing,” because he’d rather just think about things than take action. 

robin scherbatsky: istp /6w5  

robin’s no-nonsense, unsentimental, reasonable, when ted is anything but, calmly pointing out why they’ll never work when he starts going off about how he pictures them together. she works hard, jumping at any opportunity that’ll help further her career, often neglecting her relationships in the process. she’s emotionally closed off, won’t share her life and her interests with her boyfriend, and hates being vulnerable around people. she’s not good at dealing with her feelings most of time, like her feelings for ted or how jealous she’s of victoria, often taking it out on her with passive-agressive comments. she’s the only one who actually shares interests with barney, taking up his challenge to do and say inappropriate things on air, bonding over their mutual love for laser tag and generally being adventurous together.

barney stinson: estp / 3w2 

 barney’s constantly making ted do things. he can’t stand ted just sit around and not hit on girls all night. he doesn’t understand why ted gets fixated on certain women when there are so many other women around, so many different opportunities, all he has to is just go up and talk to them. he’s superficially charming, sees women as objects, will lie/do anything/make up anything if it means he can get one to sleep with him. he’s all about no commitment and causal sex and not getting emotionally involved in anything.

marshall erisken: enfp / 9w1 

 marshall’s off-beat and quirky and looks at things just a little differently than everyone else in his friend group. yeah, there’s a girl in ted’s bed, but what about the pineapple? he likes making up complicated games and is easily distracted from all the studying he has to do, because he just wants to have fun. he’s kind, relaxed, not too worried about anything, but also enraged that he has to take a corporate job, because he doesn’t like selling out and just wants to do some good as an environmental lawyer.

Life is like a box of timelines.

Taking nothing seriously, Nadia forever finds creative ways to evade people, her past, and difficult conversations with those she’s involved with until she dies on her birthday — and then when she keeps dying over and over again. Nadia instantly starts coming up with theories in her attempts to understand why this is so, considering everything from the idea that the bathroom door might be a portal to the fact that the joint might be laced with something. She even entertains the possibility that the apartment building might be haunted and covers all her bases by visiting a rabbi and asking his assistant to pray for her, even though she’s not religious. Furthermore, although Nadia doesn’t believe Alan’s more moralistic ideas about why they keep dying, she’s willing to run with it if it means it’ll get them both out of their predicament. For the most part, Nadia remains unconcerned about everything. She refuses to commit to anything, preferring to drift along and do as she pleases without putting down any roots of any kind.

Judging Functional Axis: Ti/Fe

Nadia is indifferent to most people around her, treating them impersonally and preferring to remain as unattached as possible. She doesn’t want to get involved, but when she does, and it ultimately becomes too much for her to handle (like with John), Nadia finds a way to leave and rationalize her actions — both to herself and to them. When she gets stuck in a time loop, she’s sharply focused on getting herself — and later, Alan, out of it — deducing that they’re connected in some way. She has a technical approach to their problem, dismissing Alan when he believes this is “purgatorial punishment,” saying the universe doesn’t adhere to his understanding of morality, and instead, explains their glitch in terms of a bug in the code. Thoughtless and inconsiderate, as Nadia dies again and again, she learns to care more about the people around her and grows into a more selfless person.

Phil has no morals, no principles, and no allegiances. Everything he does, he does because it is to his benefit. He is sharp and analytical, able to almost instantly surmise that something is wrong with his world only moments after he wakes up on Groundhog Day for the second time. He immediately confides in Rita about the predicament he’s in, then willingly talks about it with a doctor, and then a therapist focused on problem-solving above all else. Phil has typical inferior Fe issues, in that he’s superficially charming but apathetic about the people around him. He doesn’t value human connection, using his Fe as a tool to manipulate people and get what he wants. For instance, he learns all about Rita’s interests to charm her but puts her off anyway because he fails to establish a genuine connection with her. Through the time loop, Phil finally learns how to care about the people around him and becomes excellent at serving the people of Punxsutawney.

Perceiving Functional Axis: Se/Ni

Once he gets over the shock of reliving the same day over and over again, Phil decides to throw caution to the wind and use his newfound freedom recklessly. He drives over train tracks, He commits theft. But when that fails to satisfy him, he impulsively abducts Punxsutawney’s groundhog and drives off a cliff, proceeding, then, to exhaust every possible way of getting out of the time loop by killing himself. He is an opportunist, good at seizing the moment to accomplish what he wants — like asking for Nancy’s teacher’s name to pretend he’s from her high school and utilizing all the information Rita gives him to woo her. But as he continues to remain trapped in the time loop, Phil only finds fulfillment when he can find deeper meaning in the world around him and commit to a larger cause.

Completely out of touch with his Fi values, Will has no problem sacrificing his ideals to maintain his ratings. A dominating presence at ACN, he appears affable on TV but can’t even be bothered to remember the names of the people who work for him. But partly due to Mack’s influence, he has a change of heart that allows him to connect with his Fi again, becoming the principled man he used to be, striving to report the news the “correct” way this time, and as he puts it, on a “mission to civilize.” Hypercompetent and incredibly effective, Will solely deals in facts and tangible data, so much so that even when he’s having a breakdown and tearing into a college student, he does so with facts and evidence. He puts his own party on the line of fire, tearing them down and pointing out their ignorance and uselessness because he values rationality and common sense above all else.

Perceiving Functional Axis: Ni/Se

Though Will is a born visionary, both idealistic and romantic about the world and the news, he gives up on his pursuits for material gain and fame. When inspired again, he’s on his mission to change the world, through his reporting, but also through any means he can, although that usually doesn’t work out for him because he doesn’t take practical methods to do so (like eliminating the anonymity of his comments section.) Will is forward-thinking, calculating, and incredibly strategic. When he devises a plan to accomplish his goals, he’s at least five steps ahead of everyone — from having the foresight to buy a ring for Mack to win his petty feud, to orchestrating an escape plan for Neal and taking the blame for himself to keep Neal from prison. At all times, he’s usually the first person in the room to grasp the implications of a certain situation and find a solution around it.

Reclaiming the fourth estate. Reclaiming journalism as an honorable profession. A nightly newscast that informs a debate worthy of a great nation. Civility, respect, and a return to what’s important; the death of bitchiness; the death of gossip and voyeurism; speaking truth to stupid. No demographic sweet spot; a place where we all come together.

Perceiving Functional Axis: Se/Ni

Mack is a hands-on, engaged, active EP who’s been on the ground reporting in the Middle East, where she was stabbed when covering a protest in Islamabad. She is a swift thinker, excellent under pressure, quick to respond to crises as they arise, and improvise as she goes. She can be reactive, rash, and slightly hasty when it comes to taking action. For instance, when Sloan tells her that all of the staff thinks Will is an asshole, she stumbles over herself to prove to her — and everyone else — that he really is not a bad person, which snowballs into her sending all of ACN’s staff an e-mail broadcasting that she cheated on Will. MacKenzie’s focus, for the most part, is on the present, where she’s concerned with running News Night. Occasionally, she shows flits of intuition, but they are few and far between, with her most notable instinct being her distrust of Jerry Dantana.

Judging Functional Axis: Fi/Te

Idealistic, quixotic, and principled, Mack wants to run News Night the right way, going back to real journalism or the way journalism is meant to be. She is in touch with her emotions and her morals in a way Will isn’t, persuading him to report the news the right way — and in a way that is most authentic to her, Will, Charlie, the rest of their staff, and the profession of Journalism. Mack can be extremely stubborn, persistent, and resolute in pursuing what she wants — in talking Will into working with her even when he’s particularly difficult to be around, in trying to persuade Jim into dating Maggie, in following Will around every day and asking him about the voicemail he left for her trying to get him to relent. Bold and authoritative, she is always assured of herself.

Better to be king for a night than schmuck for a lifetime.

Rupert lives entirely in his head, spinning long, elaborate fantasies of rising to fame as “the new King Of Comedy” that on his date with Rita, he gives her his autograph because he’s so convinced he’ll become a famous comedian soon. Wholly detached from his reality, Rupert doesn’t understand that Jerry sees him as an obsessive stalker, even when he says so, because, in his mind, they’re friends who have a true connection. An impatient man, he’s focused on the short-term, refusing to take Jerry’s (or Cathy’s) advice to start from the bottom and build his material, that even when he engineers his big break, he only aims for a single appearance on Jerry’s show, willingly giving himself to the police afterward, because that one night as a guest comedian is all he wanted for himself.

Rupert believes in himself when no one else does. He’s confident he’s an excellent comedian, considers himself a genuine friend of Jerry’s, is fully convinced of his own ambitions, and never allows anyone to tell him otherwise. This makes him pushy, forceful, and blind to how he comes off to others in his relentless pursuits. He can be shrewd, calculating, and especially determined. He talks his way into Jerry Langford’s car, calling for his appointment, showing up at Jerry Langford’s office, his home, never knowing when to give up, that he finally abducts him to serve his purpose. Incredibly stubborn, strong-willed, and goal-oriented, he’s not even the slightest bit moved by Langford’s pleas or the police’s threats, refusing to yield until he accomplishes what he wants.
