Types Of Fae
The realm of the Fae is vast and diverse, with countless variations across different cultures and mythologies. Here's a comprehensive list of some of the most common types of faeries, along with additional details about their characteristics and folklore. This is by no means a complete list, but it should give you a pretty good idea of the types of faeries that exist. If you want information about interacting with the Fae check out this post.
⢠Brownies: These helpful household spirits are often depicted as small, wiry creatures with long ears. They are known for their industrious nature, performing chores like cleaning, cooking, and tending to livestock. However, they can also be quite mischievous, playing pranks on those who neglect their needs.
⢠Pixies: Small and playful, pixies are known for their love of mischief and pranks. They are often associated with the air and are said to inhabit trees, flowers, and other natural wonders.
⢠Puca: A Celtic spirit and shape-shifter that can take various forms, including horses, rabbits, goats, and humans. Itâs also known as Puck in English Folklore, is sometimes believed to use the light of Will oâ the Wisp to lure people into swamps or ditches and then flee with delight.
⢠Leprechauns: These Irish faeries are best known for their love of treasure and their skill in making shoes. They are often depicted as solitary figures, guarding their pots of gold at the end of rainbows.
⢠Sprites: Tiny nature spirits, sprites are often associated with specific locations, such as forests, rivers, or mountains. They are known for their playful nature and their ability to bring good luck or misfortune.
⢠Nymphs: Beautiful female spirits, nymphs are associated with specific natural elements, such as water, forests, or mountains. They are often depicted as graceful and alluring, with a deep connection to the natural world.
⢠Sylphs: Air spirits, sylphs are often depicted as ethereal beings, capable of flying and moving with the wind. They are associated with the sky and are often seen as messengers between the earthly and spiritual realms.
⢠Salamanders: Salamanders are a type of elemental spirit commonly associated with fire. Alternatively, Salamanders are sometimes described as slender, red, and dry-skinned creatures with a malevolent demeanor.
⢠Undines: Water spirits, undines are associated with lakes, rivers, and oceans. They are often depicted as beautiful, aquatic beings, with a strong connection to the emotional and spiritual depths of water.
⢠Gnomes: Earth spirits, gnomes are often depicted as short, bearded creatures, with a deep connection to the earth. They are associated with mining, gardening, and other earth-related activities.
⢠Elves: Often depicted as tall, elegant beings with pointed ears, elves are associated with nature, magic, and wisdom. They are often divided into two categories: the light elves, who are associated with beauty, grace, and harmony; and the dark elves, who are associated with darkness, magic, and secrecy.
⢠Goblins: Mischievous creatures, goblins are often associated with underground realms. They are known for their love of treasure, their skill in crafting, and their tendency to play tricks on humans.
⢠Boggarts: Household spirits, boggarts can be either helpful or harmful, depending on how they are treated. They are often associated with specific objects or locations, and they can cause mischief if they are neglected or mistreated.
⢠Banshees: Irish female spirits, banshees are associated with death and are often heard wailing or keening to announce the impending death of a family member.
⢠Cat Sidhe: Celtic legend says cat siths appear as large black cats with a white spot on their chest. These mischievous faeries were said to be able to steal the souls of the deceased.

⢠Kobolds: Kobolds (sometimes called Cobolts or Koboldts) originate from Germanic folklore and act similarly to the English Brownie. They are house faeries and can act very mischievous if forgotten.
⢠Selkie: Originating from Orkney and United Kingdom folklore, a Selkie is a gentle water spirit believed to live in the sea as a seal, but once on land, they fully assume human form.
⢠Trows: Trows are a type of Troll from the Orkney and Shetland Islands who are sometimes called Drows. Generally, all Trows kidnap humans, but they value young mothers and newborns most of all.

Hiccup ran through the forest, vision blurry from the tears welling up in them.
His dad was leaving on another trip again, and Hiccup would be all alone... again.
"You'll have Gobber, lad," his father had said, sitting the boy on his knee.
"But I need you!" Hiccup had cried out, "You're always leaving, it isn't fair!"
And, being the wise Viking he was at six years old, he packed himself a little bag and took off into the forest, thinking that maybe if the trolls took him in, they wouldn't leave him.
Tripping over a rock, Hiccup tumbled into the forest floor with a cry of surprise. Dirt was smudged across his tunic, and a few stray leaves were stuck in his hair. Sniffling, he sat up, looking around.
...He was good and lost now.
Fear gripped at him. He had been angry before, but now? He didn't want to live with the trolls. He was scared, and he wanted safety.
Drawing his knees up to his chest, his bag sat beside him as the tears rolled down his cheeks.
A twig snapped, and he looked up in alarm. A girl about his age was there, with red hair similar to his own and green eyes. Sniffling, Hiccup wiped his face with the back of his hand, "You...you're not a troll, are you?"
"I hardly think that one instance classifies me as a, a heart breaker..." He rolled his eyes playfully, knowing Rose was just teasing.
"Just like in Berk..." Their tribe wasn't as diverse as this one, but maybe someday they could be! "It's certainly an advantage that you can go on land."
Hiccup slowed as they approached the kelp forest, his green eyes widening in wonder. "Wow...this is really something!" Excitedly, he grinned at Rose. "Just think of it like the willow tree in my circle. It, it's kind of similar, yeah?"
And it really was just like a forest, the kelp was home to many different creatures. He took in his surroundings with a gentle curiosity, sometimes leaning to get a closer look but not touching the creatures. He didn't want to disturb them.
From Ula's description, these uisce were absolutely wisps. Hiccup nodded in agreement with Rose, his gaze turning to the blue and purple one that lingered near him.
Cupping his hands, he held them below the wisp, so it could sit in his hands if it wanted to. "Hey, little guy! You're kind of like a guardian, aren't you?" He turned to Ula, "So will we follow them to navigate the kelp forest?" Ula was trying at times, but she wasn't cruel. And that wisp seemed to like her, so it was likely she had let them guide her at least once.
The little sprite glowed, appearing happy in Hiccupâs hand. Where wisps warmed these little guys were cold. Rose was having a bit of fun chasing hers. For a moment she forgot the weird kelp and deep ocean. Instead the orange light was testing her speed and agility around the kelp vines.
âI thought weâd have them guide you and your sister. While I know the best places to show you, they will show you what you need to see.â Ula looked reluctant to give up leadership but she understood a bit of their circumstance. PĂşcas were fickle. And with what she⌠overheard, they needed to learn about her home.
âStill canât believe your sister is a scaredy fish.â Ula muttered so only Hiccup heard. She watched Rose dive after the sprite and had to fight her own smile.
âSheâd have made an awesome merrow. So sad youâre both cursed to the land and air.â The Selkie sighed dramatically. âOur love was tragic from the start I suppose. Iâm sorry it didnât work out.â She spoke as if she was the one that called it off.
âI got you! Ha!â Rose had her wisp in her arms and tail curled in joy. Ula clapped with a raised brow.
âWooow. Good job. Now ask your uisce to guide you. Weâll see what it thinks is important.â

Hiccup ran through the forest, vision blurry from the tears welling up in them.

Fear gripped at him. He had been angry before, but now? He didn't want to live with the trolls. He was scared, and he wanted safety.

A twig snapped, and he looked up in alarm. A girl about his age was there, with red hair similar to his own and green eyes. Sniffling, Hiccup wiped his face with the back of his hand, "You...you're not a troll, are you?"
He really felt for her. Being thrown into a situation like this would jar just about anyone, but to have been afraid of the ocean and to find yourself suddenly a sea creature? No wonder she was having a hard time. "I know. I'm sorry, Rose. But don't worry, it's only temporary, and I'm going to help you through this."
The appearance of the bubble had his eyes widen, watching as it floated upwards. "Huh." That was new.
Ula chiming in had Hiccup startle. If he was on land, he would have jumped, but under the water, he simply jolted. As soon as she turned away, Hiccup rolled his eyes, his arms falling to his sides. "Yeah. Ex. We weren't actually together, you know. Though apparently she thinks otherwise..."
He sighed. "Come on. Might as well follow her."
âYouâre just a heart breaker.â Rose stuck close to Hiccup as they swam after Ula.
âItâs not just selfies that live here. I mean obviously. Mar is a merman. But there are also merrows. And a few sirens. Our clans enjoy coming together to make big and diverse pods. Each of us have skills and talents that add to our community.â Ula spoke as she lead them.
âMers are the most human like of us. They have very dexterous hands and are incredible crafters. Merrows are crazy good hunters. Sirens are artsy, of course they are. And selkies? Why we are the hardiest of them! Our fur and ability to shift forms make us the perfect traders and travelers.â The farther they got from the community the quieter the water around them got. The⌠bluer it got.
Rose swam closer to her brother. They were swimming down now. But there was green coming into their view.
âHere we are!â Ula took off ahead and swam into the green mass. Getting closer showed it was literally a kelp forest. The kelp grew from the ground up about ten feet. The strands swaying in the current. Once they went into the kelp more colors could be seen. Bright fish, strange flower like things clung to the kelp and floor.
Movement between the green caught Roseâs eye. Amongst the fish were glowing lights. They floated around and changed colors. It was almost hypnotizing watching them.
âAre those wisps?â Rose swam closer to one. It wasnât fire like a wisps but it moved like one. Ula giggled like Rose asked a silly question.
âA wisp? Donât be ridiculous. These are uisce sprites. They guide those who are good to safety. And guide those cruel to death.â To Roseâs surprise one of the sprites actually floats around Ula.
âSo⌠they sound exactly like wisps. Just⌠underwater.â Rose swims with a red one that just guides her in circles around Hiccup. A blue and purple one floats around Hiccup. Itâs cold to the touch but seems content to lazily follow the fae.

The Veil was still a mystery to Lyra. She shouldnât even be there. Dirty blood wasnât permitted. But that didnât stop the young fae from exploring. As long as no other fae saw her she was fine.
Lyra found her way to a dark forest to hide in for a bit. Random items scattered the forest floor. Lost items from other realms. Items others forgot about or left to rot.
Lyra was enjoying her exploration when a sound pulled her attention. Her feathers fluffed up at the sound of static over a radio. It gave her goosebumps. Searching for the sound she started to hear⌠a voice?
Finally she found a small square radio at the base of a large tree. Picking it up hesitantly she listened again before quietly calling into the speaker.
âHello?â
'Home? Yes...we can go home and rest,' Simon thought to himself, a small smile finding its way onto his lips. He had never had a home before. A home sounded nice.
Then he heard her talk about how she gets her powers. Trees? Nature?
"You shouldn't have come here then," he says in frustration before groaning and holding his side. He was in so much pain but now he had someone who was powerless and weak. He couldn't just let her fend for herself, he wasnt that much of a monster.
Simon panted before sighing and sitting taller, forcing himself to be strong and forget his pain. He had a new mission and he would do everything in his power to complete it.
Protect Lyra and get her home.
"You won't be in the way. I'll keep you safe. I swear on the Stars."
This was what made him different. Edenites swore to the Last Tree. The C.O.I. swore to God. Simon swore to the stars. To him it was a more sacred and real prayer and swear. The stars are real. You could see them. Even if they were now ghost lights.
She winced when he groaned in pain. Her hand reaching out in the dark to find his side. Gently, Lyra rubbed the abused spot hoping to help ease the pain. She heard his frustration. Sheâd been reckless. Yet imagining him in pain and alone was worse.
âAnd Iâll keep you safe.â She echoed him with a determined smile. âItâs funny. My mother taught me to swear on the stars too. Said theyâd guide me and always look over me.â There was only a second of hesitation before Lyra carefully hugged Simon. She was acutely aware of his injuries as she offered the simple comfort.
When she moved back from him she bumped the wall with her wing. It was dark in the sub with only the moss and odd button glowing. She gave a huff.
âOkay, so⌠what now?â She did her best to look around the space. âThere has to be something in here to help.â Standing up and feeling her way against the wall and pipes. Her bag only had healing items and water. Not very helpful when it seemed the sub itself was broken. She found the chair and glowing controls. So this was how he was steering. How strange.
âWere you piloting blind?â That was a terrifying realization. Thatâs why it was so dark. No windows. Just solid metal all around.
Oh...so this is what a hug felt like. He hadnt felt this gentle affection since he was a child. He couldn't help the soft sigh he gave as his right hand gently rested on her arm.
So someone wanted him to live just as much as he wanted to. What a nice thought.
Simon 'watched' as Lyra walked away and his attention was pulled to a small spark near his knees. After clicking the camera button he saw that he was kneeling next to the manhole cover for the engine compartment below. It made sense, there was only so much space in the sub, putting everything below where people walked saved space.
He was about to speak, to tell Lyra what he had found when she made a comment about him driving blind.
"Huh? Oh, yeah. The glass isn't made to handle this much pressure, the port hole is made more so I can talk to the captain up above. When I'm in the...i guess hangar," he says with a shrug as he hit the camera button again.
"Its why I use the camera. Helps me keep track of the walls and things. Its...slow."
He searched through the small storage container in the wall and found some useful items. 70% alcohol, bandage tape, scissors, and a life vest. That last one might not be as useful but the scissors he could take out screws. Itd be useful.
The Iron people really were crazy. This is what they came up with? Lyra wrinkled her nose. The flash of the camera had her turning. Oh! Simon was using the camera as a light!
The fae made her way back to him. Looking much like a bird in a cage. Fidgety and curious. She settled by him, her arm resting against his, and looked at what heâd found. A makeshift first aid kit? A metal thermos catches her eye and she taps it.
âThereâs water in it. Itâll do you good to drink.â She encouraged him. Her curiosity grew and once the camera cooled down she pressed the button. The sound still making her flinch but she managed a giggle as the sub was illuminated.
âStars thatâs bright!â Kneeling by Simon she thought of how heâd managed to navigate. âBasically youâre navigating like a bat with assistance from a camera. Crazy.â The spark under them made her jump. Head tilting in confusion.

Going home did sound good, but Fluffy brought them there for a reason.
While Rose ignored the locals, Hiccup returned their smiles and waves, finding the atmosphere of the village to be friendly. "We are?" Last time he was able to get Fluffy to send them home, but how would they return from here? There wasn't another pĂşca that they knew of nearby, and even then there was no guarantee that they would help. "How far, exactly, are we from Berk?"
His eyes drifted from between Ula and Rose, knowing immediately that he certainly had his claws full with these two. Swimming between them, he held up a finger, "Ula, would you excuse us for a minute?" Without waiting for an answer, he took Rose's hand and swam a little distance with her, far enough to have a private conversation.
"I want to go home too, but we are literally out of our depths here! And I get the feeling that Fluffy won't bring us back home until we do what he said, which was to gain some appreciation for a different world. How can we do that if we take the fastest route back to Berk?"
Lowering his voice, he continued, "Look, I know Ula is...Ula, but we are strangers here and she is willing to help us out. I say we give it until nightfall. If we aren't magically brought back home by then, we will find our own way home. Now, regardless of whether you agree or not..." He glanced over at the waiting Selkie, "Let's show her how fearless you are. The depths can't be that bad, right?"
Rose was silent as Hiccup spoke. Her anger at Ula cooling as he lectured her. Instead she found herself looking down at the sea floor. Not quite embarrassed, but certainly given perspective.
âI hate when youâre right.â She grumbled. Her arms were crossed in a defensive manner. Though it was more to comfort herself.
âLook, this is really freaky, okay? And I ainât⌠comfortable around here. I wasnât able ta explain well why I didnât like the ocean. And now that Iâm stuck in it? Everything just feels wrong.â She sighed and a bubble escaped her mouth and floated up. Rose looked even paler as she watched it before closing her eyes.
âIâll⌠try. Iâll play nice with Ula and.,. Whatever.â Rose did smile a bit when Hiccup tried to cheer her up. Fearless huh? Sure, she could do that. She gave him a nod.
âAlright. Ready. Letâs do this.â
âOh wonderful!â Roseâs tail flailed as Ula swam over. So much for a private conversation. Rose growled.
âIf youâre looking to appreciate the depths, you must see the kelp forest! Come on! This way!â The Selkie swam ahead, expecting them to follow.
âYour ex is annoying.â Rose grumbled with a smirk. Might as well have some fun.

"Amazing," Hiccup breathed, eyes wide as he looked down at the replacement fin. "It really is light! It almost feels like there's nothing there."
Shaking his head, he answered, "No, not too tight. I think it fits fairly well, but this is my first prosthetic fin. I'm not entirely sure how it ought to feel."
Pushing himself up from the chair, he swam around a little, his smile widening as he did. "Oh, this is fantastic!" He didn't even have to use his arms! Looking back at Mar, he nodded. "I sure will! Thank--whoa!"
Yet again, Ula had his arm and was pulling him away. "Uh, shouldn't we wait for my sister?"
He was looking forward to learning more about this world, though it being better than where he was from was subjective. "I don't know how long we have, but a tour sounds good. Right, Rose?" Extricating his arm from Ula's, he said, "It's quite different down here, that's for certain!"
âCanât ya just take us ta Berk? I kinda want ta go home and forget this ever happened.â Rose snapped as she followed them into the busy ocean. Many of the sea residents looked at them as they passed. Some waving with a smile. Rose ignored them.
âYouâre so far from Berk, though. It would be quite the swim.â Ula pouted but let Hiccup take his arm back. âI suppose if we caught a ride with a dragon or whale it would be faster. But why the rush?â
Ula swam over to a coral reef area. Brightly colored fish and creatures milled around. Ula tickled a few of the bright fish and cooed at them lovingly.
âLetâs find a dragon then. That scauldron was helpful.â Rose pushed but Ula sighed dramatically.
âThose dragons are currently swimming east in a migration. We need to find ones going west.â Ula eyed Rose, seeming to realize something. She smirked.
âTo find a species weâd have to swim out to the depths. Think you could handle that?â Ula taunted. Rose clenched her fists and she felt her barbs rattle like her feathers use to.

Hiccup glanced down at her hold on his arm. Giving a nervous chuckle, he leaned away from her. "Uh...let's just say, we were surprised he did this. It wasn't planned, if that's what you're asking."
Exhaling through his gills, his shoulders lowered. "Yeah, I know..." Apparently in any form, the amount he'd lost was a lot. Honestly he was lucky he got to keep his knee joint. "I really appreciate that, Mar."
At Ula's offer, Hiccup quickly shook his head, "Oh! Oh, you don't have to do that. I, I'm grateful for the offer, but it wouldn't feel right to take it..." Except, he and Rose didn't know what forms of payment were used, and certainly had nothing on them to pay with... "Allow me to pay you back, then? I, I can craft you something, maybe?"
Doing as he was told, he watched with curiosity as the merman worked. "What kind of material is that?" He wanted to know everything about how it worked!
Once the new tail was secure, he lifted and lowered his tail, testing it out. "This is perfect, thank you, Mar!" Wide turns he could deal with. Hiccup was just grateful to be able to swim independently again!
"Rose! Look!" He held up his fin for his sister to see, an excited smile on his face. "Incredible work, isn't it?"
âAnything you make is perfect, Hiccup.â The Selkie swam around him as she watched.
âEvery fin is made with different materials to match the tail.â The old mer muttered as he concentrated. âYours is a mixture of sea silk and fibers from seaweed. Thin, flexible, light weight.â He tugged on the connecting leather around Hiccupâs tail.
âHow does that feel? Too tight?â The bottom of the tail was the hardest to attach. But the leather was snug and only left a slight gap between the fins.
âGo ahead. Swim around. Get a feel for it.â Mar crossed his arms appraisingly. At Hiccupâs praise a real grin crossed Marâs face.
âIâm the best when it comes to fins. Just take care of it.â He waved them off.
âVery nice, Hiccup. Better than going in circles.â Rose was cut off as Ula grabbed his arm again and pulled him out. Rose growling and following after.
âOh I canât wait to show you around! Youâll see. Our world is so much better than up there.â

"Did you know there's a whole festival dedicated to Mothman? And there's a bunch of themed food and drinks. And there's plushies even! You can get a plush Mothman! How cool is that!" Noah grins and bounces as he goes on and on all about Mothman.
"I've been researching cryptids just for fun and stuff but think Mothman is the coolest one I looked up yet. Other then the gaint squid but I already know that's real. It's the unknown stuff that's really neat."
âI didnât know that. Huh. I bet Mothman would love a festival all about him.â Oh she knew he would. Mothman was as vain as a fae.
âWhat other cryptids have you learned about?â Lyra closed her book and looked to Noah, giving him her full attention.
Starter for @the-convict-of-blood
Picking it up hesitantly she listened again before quietly calling into the speaker.
âHello?â
Simon groaned as he moved to sit up with Lyra's help. He might have gotten up on his own, but the pain would have been much worse without her help.
"W-what," he croaks, a noise of pain escaping him as he pulled his arms close to his chest, trying to stop the pain somehow. "Who are you?"
He couldn't see well, even with the glowing moss trying to help. So, with a weak arm and glance, Simon reached for the button to take a photo, illuminating the sub around him. And the figure beside him.
Oh. So she really did have wings. They were very pretty, he should have seen them even in the darkness. Maybe he was just that out of it? Not seeing things he should and seeing things he shouldn't.
Wouldn't be the first time.
"H-how did you get here," he groaned, moving to sit on his heels with his knees firmly planted on the ground. He couldn't tell how tall she was. Was she smaller than him? Most people were, he was six foot four, even crouched he often towered over most.
God his head hurt. And his arms...and his back...Basically everything felt like it was breaking. He was in so much pain.
Stars he was heavy! Lyra took note of his breathing and every wince. Possible bruised or even cracked ribs. All the crashing sheâd heard⌠it had been him being knocked around in here. Her stomach twisted in worry. She pulled out the salve to help with his injuries.
Only to almost drop it as she was blinded by sudden light. The flash caused her to squeak and she covered her eyes with her hands and wings, peaking up at him. And up. Lyra blinked to clear her vision as she realized just how big Simon was. He had to be a foot taller than her!
Her instincts had her curling in on herself and her wings tucking in tight. He was a warrior. That was clear. That annoying voice of instincts telling her sheâd trapped herself in a small area with a hunter.
âIâm Lyra.â She smiled hesitantly. This was Simon. He may look like a hunter but he had the kind and sad voice.
âHere.â She placed the little container in his hand. âRub this over your cuts and over the places you ache the most. Itâll heal the wounds and ease the pain.â It was her own creation. Lyra was proud of her medicines.
âAs for how I got here. Our radios are connected. I⌠kinda followed the flow of magic to you.â She pulled at a strand of her long red hair in a nervous habit.
âI heard you yell. You were in pain and then the radio was silent. I got scared that you- I had to do something. So I used all my magic to get here.â Lyra puffed up and grinned at him more confidently. Though it deflated a bit.
âThe- uh- plan was to get here, get you, and go home. But I underestimated how much power it took to get here. I have to wait for my well of magic to refill before I get us out.â And Lyra really should have planned for that. Her magic pulled from the earth and plants. Simon told her he was in a blood ocean. There were no plants to draw from here. Sheâd have to wait for her magic to naturally return.
Simon looked down at the fae, confused but glad that she was here. He had been alone for so long, he needed someone to just...just stay with him. To tell him things would be ok.
"Thank you, Lyra. Its nice to finally meet you," he says softly, gently holding the bottle of medicine, then moved to carefully and slowly pull off his long sleeve shirt which clung to his new scabs and injuries. He couldn't help the noises of pain, muscles screaming in protest, but he continued on, evenutally pulling the wool material off his body then started putting the medicine on.
His arms were cut, front and back, he had a cut on his forehead, his chest, and his back was completely covered in bruises and small scabs.
Beneath those marks were old, healed scars. They were mostly around his shoulders, a few were along his back ribs, amd though they couldnt be seen, many were around his hips and waist.
He had been a warrior for many years. And he found no glory in that past.
"How-f-fuck, how long do you think thay eill take? To...refill your well?"
As Lyra saw more and more of Simonâs injuries, she realized two things. One, Simonâs world was a lot worse than she thought. And two, she was weak. Not for the first time in her life did her half human side leave a bitter taste in her mouth. If she were a full fae, she could have gotten them out now. Or at least have magic to completely heal Simon and not rely on salve.
âWhen we get home Iâll patch you up. Youâll feel good as new.â She was glaring down at her hands. Annoyed with herself. Though she shook out of it by Simonâs swear and question. Her annoyance once again washed away by her nerves.
âOh! Well⌠I donât know how long?â Another sheepish smile. âSee, I usually pull from the plant life around me. From Earth and it fills my magic quick. Iâve, um, never had to let my well fill on its own before.â Her wings drooped and she tried to hide how she tensed. Would he be mad? Like a dog kicked too many times she braced for it.
âIâll stay out of your way. I just⌠want to help.â Lyra evaded quietly.
