This is a break from my typical post, as it it not a poem of any kind. Instead, this is going to be a sharing of experience.Â
You see, about a week ago I was discharged from a mental hospital after a suicide attempt. I have waited so long to talk about this as I have needed time to readjust to regular life after everything I have been through, as I had a lot to catch up on with school and other parts of my life.
I imagine some of you might not be interested in all I have to say on the matter, and I do not blame you. If you interested, however, simply click the read more button below.
So you’ve decided to read on, you probably won’t regret it.
Now, I’m not here to go into personal details of my life, or tell everyone how things in the world need to change to help those like me who suffer from mental illness and/or have attempted suicide. Instead I aim to provide some light on things I experienced the past few weeks of my life.
To get the question out of the way:
I have suffered with depression and anxiety for eight years of my life, given the fact that I am 17, that is significant portion of my life. I have attempted suicide many times before, and have and continue to have self-harming habits such as starving myself, scratching at myself, cutting, refusing medical help when I need it and many other things. I also have gone through years of sometimes sever bullying due to my ascent, appearance, family, interests, sexuality, and many other things.
I say this not to get you to pity me, but instead to provide some context as to some of the things I have gone through in life to drive me to attempting suicide.
After this most recent attempt, I was taken to the hospital after my friend called 911 in an attempt to save my life. I spent an entire day in the ER as doctors monitored my vitals and assured I was stable at all times (along with making sure I stay awake to raise my chances of survival). As soon as I was deemed medically stable I was sent to a mental hospital for adolescents, where I spent about two weeks.
For those of you who have never been to a mental hospital: it is nothing like you imagine or how it typically portrayed in media. For my experience at least, it wasn’t that bad. I got an opportunity to escape from everything in my life and work on myself for a while, along with meet and become friends with other going through similar things as me and who truly understood my life without me having to tell them my entire life story.
While I still wanted out as soon as possible, it was not because of the experience as much as it was that I am the kind of person who craves freedom and the ability to do whatever I want to, when I want to do it.Â
My staff was (typically) very nice and understanding to all the patients situations, and tried their best to help us however they could. Some of them treated me better than my own mother, though that is not extremely hard to do in my case.
My biggest take away from the whole experience, however, is how people will always find ways to amaze you, and that society needs to change many things to help people it claims to care about.
Most importantly though, I want to let anyone who reads this know that no matter how you feel you are not alone. Recovery is possible no matter how hard or far away it seems. If you ever need anyone to talk to feel free to message me. I know things might seems like an out of control mess, where everything gets worse by the second. You might feel as if no one cares for you, or like life would be better for so many people if you were to disappear forever. This is not the truth.
Life is truly worth the pain, no matter how crazy that seems. So please, put down the blade, or the bottle. step away from the rope or poison, or whatever you think will do the job. Think about the best moments in your life, the things that bring you semblance of peace. The things you would miss the most if you were to leave this world behind. Talk to someone, be it me, a professional, one of your friends or someone from the suicide/depression hotline.
Take the steps towards recovery, no matter how hard it seems. Find your happiness, and find you purpose in life.Â
At the very least know, I care about you, regardless of if I know you or not. I understand what your going though, and I want to save from going through some of the things I have gone through.
I love you dear reader, and I hope you find happiness among the darkness of life.
