Happy Birthday to us! 🎂🏺 In the fall of 1971, Studio Potter journal began when members of the New Hampshire Potter’s Guild (pictured bottom right) discussed publishing a magazine, which led to the formation of a nonprofit organization called the Daniel Clark Foundation, named for an obscure colonial potter whose fame came principally from a diary he left upon his death in 1828. SP was officially recognized as a not-for-profit organization on September 13, 1972. The cover of the first issue was hand silk-screened and its modest twenty pages contained an eclectic mix of photographs and texts, including articles on apprenticeships, photo-resist decoration techniques, and homemade pugmills. Nigerian potter Ladi Kwali’s exact birth day is not known, so today, in SP's #todayinceramicarthistory series, we remember her on the anniversary of her death, August 12, 1984. Kwali worked with Michael Cardew in the fifties and sixties at at the pottery he set up in Abuja, Nigeria, which was later renamed Ladi Kwali Pottery. She became well-known internationally and a decorated figure in Nigeria, even gracing the back of the 20 Naira bill. ... The wall became a literal fulcrum for U.S. - Mexico relations and children and adults were connected in meaningful ways on both sides with the recognition that the actions that take place on one side have a direct consequence on the other side. Congrats to the SP Grants for Apprenticeship award winners! In this inaugural year, competition for the GAP grants was fierce. Twenty applications vied for five, $10,000 grants. The official opening of the Victoria & Albert Museum by Queen Victoria was on June 20, 1857. And, 2019 is the 120th anniversary of the renaming of the museum from the South Kensington Museum to the Victoria and Albert Museum. The V&A has one of the most extensive ceramics collections in the world. In April 2018, our editor visited the museum for a day--an insultingly small amount of time to spend there--and filmed this video. Any ceramist could easily spend a week, a month, even a year studying their vast collection. For that, one would need to apply to the V&A's professional residency program. V&A residency alumna, Clare Twomey's work is featured in Studio Potter, Volume 34, Number 1, 2005. Happy Father's Day!  For many potters, fathers have been influential to their sense of craftsmanship. "My father and maternal grandfather hand-crafted farm tools and modified farm equipment to meet their needs. My father cut trees from the farm and hauled coal from the mines to sell during the winter. He built a hydraulic system for his flat-bed truck from parts that he found at a junk yard, and turned it into a dump truck so that unloading the wood and coal would be easier.
