in honor of may being pacific islander heritage month, i decided to self indulge a bit and include some of the samoan language in here. so for context:
lima: hand or five
fe’e: octopus

9 months prior to the Fourth of July chaos, you had worked a fair balance of day and night shifts. Not even thirty minutes into your day shift, Dennis called for you across the pitt to supervise one of his cases.
Before you, sits an older, middle aged man with a flannel shirt wrapped around his hand. Your first concern is the way the patient’s hand looks like it’s wrapped inside a basketball. Before you assess the situation you take a step back, remembering that this is Dennis’s patient and you’re only here to supervise.
“Hello, Mr.Williams. My name is Dennis Whitaker, I am a senior medical student working with the PTMC’s trauma unit. I’m just here to check in on you and ask some questions that will help me assist you with your care today.” He does well in introducing himself. The problem is what comes after.
Mr.Williams doesn’t respond in English. Judging by the dialect, you assume he’s speaking Samoan.
You ask Dennis to hand you his chart, and as you’ve guessed it, right there confirms that he not only is of Samoan descent but his preferred language is also, of course, Samoan.
“Should I bring in Princess?”
“No, Samoan is not one of the languages she knows, but I already paged Perlah to bring one of the VRI machines over. It might take awhile since another patient in trauma 14 is using it though.”
From what you can see, he seems okay so far. Other than the way he cradles his wrapped hand, he doesn’t show any other signs of physical discomfort.
But in the trauma unit, it’s never safe to assume. You look over his file once again to see that he has two kids who were born and raised in the states. You figure that while you’re waiting for the VRI you’d take a shot in the dark.
“Sir, do you understand any English?”
He nods.
You turn to Dennis and pull him towards you to have a more hushed conversation. “It seems he can understand some English, he just can’t speak it, which means we can ask him some simple yes or no questions, before we get our hands on the VRI.”
Dennis asks the basics, just trying to figure out what he’s in for. Everything goes normally, until you see Dennis gesture to his wrapped hand, which makes Mr. Williams tense again, getting defensive, pulling his hand back. He speaks again, but you only recognize a couple words, something something lima and fe’e.
Five octopus? You can’t figure out what he could possibly be saying about five octopus. Maybe he had some seafood and probably developed an allergy? “Dennis, check for signs of allergies.”
While Dennis is trying to calm the patient, you notice he’s wearing the logo for the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium branded on the upper front panel of his shirt.
“Do you work at the Pittsburgh Zoo?”
He nods again, which only confuses you further.
Could he have possibly been handling the animals and was attacked? At this point you really wished you paid more attention during those foreign language classes in college.
Too eager to find out what’s wrong, what you don’t notice is the more you and Dennis close in the more frantic he’s becoming.
It’s not until the back of your hand comes in contact with the flannel and something thick and slimy falls out.
In that moment you understand what he meant by lima and fe’e. The flannel is not wrapped around his hand to apply pressure, it’s there to hold something.
You come to the horrifying realization that he wasn’t talking about five separate octopuses but rather his hand that had been trapped by one.
Before you can pull yourself and Dennis back, the flannel has fallen off completely, revealing the 4 foot long octopus wrapped around his hand.
Dennis has jumped back in surprise, his sudden movements startling the octopus, causing it to latch on to the closest thing around, which just so happens to be Dennis' arm.
Mr. Williams has also jumped up, trying to deescalate the situation, most likely in hopes we don’t harm the creature. You also try to calm Dennis, afraid his frantic movements may cause the creature to bite or worse inject him with something venomous.
But your efforts are useless as with one last shake he, fortunately for him, manages to free his arm, but unfortunately for you, in doing so, he flings it so hard, it ends up hitting you smack dab center in the face. You don’t have enough time to process that there’s an octopus clinging to your face, before you are blinded by the ink it sprays all over.
“Get it off! GET IT OFF!”
You are now wrestling an octopus off of your face on the floor of the PTMC.
Think about that.
You’ve been verbally abused by your higher ups, have been physically abused by patients, and you are now throwing hands with a sea creature and losing.
“HULA HOOP GODDAMMIT!!”
By the time, the octopus is off your face, you have been blinded in both eyes, your face is numb where the octopus had wrapped itself, and swallowed what feels like a gallon of ink. Princess and Perlah urgently escort both you and Dennis to an empty room to quickly be checked for injuries.
You both sit in awkward, painful silence, waiting for a doctor to see you two. Despite being the senior, you don’t feel like being the one to break it. You couldn’t if you wanted to, the ink numbing the inside of your mouth, taking away your ability to speak.
Dennis fidgets with the arm that the octopus clung to, slightly scratching at the irritation. “I’m really sorry.”
You already have your hands up, shaking your head, trying to let him know it’s not his fault, because truthfully, it isn’t. He’s only been here a month, and you don’t want to make him feel horrible for something out of his control.
If anything it was your fault for not waiting on the VRI. Before you could fully reassure him, someone steps in the room and you’re met with snickering filling the room, until it turns into full blown laughter.
Like you said, it's no one’s fault. But with each moment that passes, the ongoing laughter is making the embarrassment too much to bear and you have no choice but to leave and come back to burn the entire hospital down with everyone in it.
“Here I was rushing in after Dana told me you guys needed to be seen, but oh my gosh, if you could see yourselves right now.”
This person is wheezing, barely able to get their sentence out. From how the voice, which you now know is Trinity’s, sounds like it’s coming from lower than which you were seated, you can safely assume she’s quite literally on the floor, laughing at your pain, which in the short time you have known is to be expected.
Just your luck. You can throw away the idea that you could have possibly bribe Princess and Perlah to keep quiet about this incident, because now the very last person you wanted to see you like this will most definitely not be letting you live this down.
After 10 minutes she finally calms down enough to finish caring for Dennis before coming to look over you. She works in silence, which you’re grateful for, but your gratitude doesn’t last long.
“C’mon, I was just kidding. What are you being so grumpy for, giving me the silent treatment?”
Both blind and mute at the moment, you make a fist, hopefully she understands that you’re trying to gesture that you’re mad at the joke.
She chuckles to herself. “Right. Sorry, forgot about that.”
You’d roll your eyes if you could. A moment later you hold out your hand reaching for hers. After some reluctance, you feel her place her hand in yours.
It’s cold against yours. Finally you flip her hand so her palm is facing up and start tracing the word, tired, across it. Even after you’re done writing the word on her palm, you continue to hold her hand, now that your warmth has settled into hers.
“Don’t worry I’ll patch you up real good.” She flips her hand and in turn, uses her thumb to rub small circles on the back of your hand to offer some comfort.
She now focuses on her work in silence (for real this time) and soon enough, you find yourself falling asleep through the process.
The snap of her gloves coming off is enough for you to come to.
“And all done.” With the way she ends her sentence you expect her to say more. “I'll make sure staff keeps this quiet.”
That’s unexpected and even if she is being truthful you highly doubt that, remembering which nurses were the ones to escort you to your room, but you appreciate the gesture. Still the disbelief shows on your face.
“Don’t worry, I’m not the mean, scary resident Huckleberry makes me out to be. Besides, I have to stay on my favorite senior resident’s good side, if I want to secure an attending position. Won’t look good if the future doctor writing my recommendation letter becomes the laughing stock of PTMC.”
You (attempt to) scoff at how brazen she can be, but it’s one the aspects you’ve come to like about her. Although others may find it off putting, you find it to be a breath of fresh air in a workplace where both staff and patients alike can often hide their heinous actions behind a smile.
Whether or not she’s being sarcastic, you reach for her hand again not even sure if she’s even looking at you anymore. When she places her hand in yours, this time you trace the words, thank you. You firmly grip her hand to make sure she doesn’t abruptly pull away. You want her to feel the gratitude you aren’t able to put into words.
There’s a slight pause and you start to think that maybe she didn’t get what you wrote. You tap her hand and feel her jolt.
She yanks her hand back, and you are now worried that you’ve made her uncomfortable. Before you can apologize she speaks first.
“Um right. Like I said, this is more for me than it is for you, so don’t mention it… Doc Ock.”
You wince at the name, and before you can protest its use, she has already taken her leave.
After she has left, you spend most of your shift “recovering,” waiting for your vision to be fully restored and the toxins from the ink to leave your system before finally heading home.
You called Abbot immediately to let him know you will not be working the day shift under any circumstances whatsoever, and you hang up before he can get the chance to ask about it.
Despite the unfortunate nickname that Trinity has oh so graciously bestowed upon you, true to her word, you never heard anyone talk about the specifics of that day. You’re both amazed and a little scared how you didn’t hear another word about the octopus incident after that day.
i’m so sorry for the long wait 😭😭 i know i promised this chapter back in march but i honestly didn’t expect to get caught up with school work so much so quickly, PLEASE FORGIVE ME!!
while it was mostly my school work that got in the way, i won’t lie but the way my girl samira mohan’s and a lot of other of my favorite characters in the show were handled and executed, for season 2 really killed my motivation to continue with my fanfic for awhile. to be honest season 2 was handled so poorly in comparison to season 1 that i don’t want to talk about it anymore my blood pressure is gonna rise again.
but i managed to get my motivation back by ignoring all things noah wyle and as a token of appreciation for your lovely patience, i have a special chapter prepared for you guys and don’t worry it’s already written just waiting to be posted. so stay tuned ~~
kiss me in the seat of your rover. real sweet, but i wish you were sober

summary: it’s been 6 months after that night with your best friend and you feel that you’re ready to make the first move. but working the day shift during the holiday chaos has been creating short tempers and frayed nerves which is causing you to worry that you may have been reading too much into that one night. no worries, because what better way to relieve your stress than to vent to someone who knows exactly what you’re going through.

Slow Mo.
You had been approaching 4 years into your residency when you first heard the name. While you knew the name was intended to be a mockery, you couldn’t understand the insult.
It was clear that the name wasn’t a testament to her competency but more so her speed, which in that case, unless you were a racer, can being slow really be that bad? You can tell that this doctor puts a lot of care into their patients. Something that can’t be said for a lot of other doctors. Sure you’ve heard about the dissatisfaction from their attending in passing, but better safe than sorry right?
It reminded you of your younger self. When you were a fresh face in your profession and feeling excited and ambitious for all the people you could help. That feeling died out pretty quickly when the reality of what a thankless job this is started to hit.
Not to say you didn’t want to help people. You just realized you can’t waste your energy trying to help those who didn’t want it. In this line of work it is best to do what you’re supposed to do and move on.
You never did get to meet the person who created the name, but no matter, not like it was any of your business. Your business inside the PTMC began and ended with the night shift. And you had your own attending to worry about.
“How many times do we have to talk about your bedside manners?”
You fight the urge to roll your eyes in front of Abbot while trying to focus on finishing with your charting. Handoff is about to happen in less than an hour and you really don’t want a reason to be staying at work longer than you have to.
“My bedside manners are just fine. It’s these people’s bedtop manners that need work.” You mumble the last part but not enough that it slips past your attending.
“What could have possibly happened in the 12 minutes Shen had stepped out for you to be telling your patient– and I quote– “You big bellied, sad sack, sorry excuse of a man?”
Fuck.
You were hoping nobody caught you but it truly was just a moment of weakness.
The patient was an older man, brought in by his wife, for a knee injury. All was well but when his labs came back, you weren’t sure if you wanted to treat it surgically or not, so you called Shen in for a second opinion. You didn’t think much of it, but you had noticed a shift in energy the moment he had stepped out.
You tried to explain that the best course of action would be to put him on crutches, but he seems less present. Before you can ask him what’s wrong, concerned that he might want to explore other types of treatment, he goes off on a tangent.
He droned on about how funny it is that things were only started to get a move on once Dr. Shen showed up. Makes a few ugly implications about women in the workplace and their “incompetence” without actually saying it.
But you don’t look at him when he goes on his whole spiel, instead you can only look at his wife, who is nothing short of embarrassed by the whole ordeal.
You can already feel the building headache from behind your eyes. If anything you just pity the poor woman who has to live with him. Alas we’ve all made our choices in life. But there’s something in the way that he holds his smile.
To a passing stranger, it may seem friendly, but here in his presence it exudes a malicious energy you’re, unfortunately, all too aware of.
This isn’t the first time you’ve been berated for being a woman and it certainly won’t be the last. It does get a little aggravating. And at 6 in the morning all you can do is bite your tongue, ignore it, and discharge him as quickly as possible. And you would have.
Honest.
But as his wife moves to, what you assume, apologize to you, he grips her forearm, stops her in her tracks and, in his words, stops her from “embarrassing” him.
And then you heard it as clear as day. One word.
B*tch.
You weren’t close enough to determine whether those words were directed towards you or his wife, but you could safely bet on the former. And you would’ve let it go, in all fairness, you have been called way worse things.
But you have been hanging on by a loose thread after your first patient of the night had been with someone with a PhD from WebMD.
(If they’re so knowledgeable about medicine why bother coming in to get checked.)
You politely ask his wife to step outside while you “examine” his knee a bit further.
You didn’t explode, nor did you have any witty or threatening comeback that will make him rethink his misogyny.
But since we’re sharing our words of wisdom, you might as well have shared your own. Instead you got real close and personal to speak right in his face.
“You’re right. I would’ve never been able to figure out how to properly diagnose you without Dr. Shen.” You took your hand to his leg and dragged a finger along his shin. He’s surprised but he didn’t move to stop you. “ Dr. Abbot is always having to pick up my slack when things get too hectic.”
Your hand stopped at the base of his knee as his breath hitches, face flushed.
“Sometimes I wonder what I would do without them, wonder if I’m good enough to do my job.”
Then you took your index finger and jabbed it right at the center of his fracture.
Before he could have let out a scream, you covered his mouth.
“I mean what is a stupid, woman like me doing trying to be an ER doctor?” You jabbed your finger even further. “I mean I could easily make a silly mistake and accidentally end up breaking your other knee right?”
At this point he was already crying.
“We wouldn’t want that now would we?”
You straighten up to finally get his papers and be rid of this man, as he sits there writhing in pain. You’re just glad he’s your last patient of the night.
“Next time you require assistance from someone else, I’d choose my words wisely around them if I were you, you big bellied, sad sack, sorry excuse of a man.” you grumbled.
His wife rushes in at the cries and you explain you were just demonstrating some "exercises” he could do at home once the pain subsides.
And the rest was history.
You turn towards Abbott and the only explanation you can offer for your behavior is “I didn’t think anyone heard me.”
He rolls his eyes before letting out a long, tired sigh.
“Are you going to report me?” You ask.
Despite how deserved, and oh so satisfying, your retaliation was, you could still lose your license over this. Under no circumstances whatsoever was your behavior acceptable. You know this. You knew this at the moment as well.
By the way Abbot is looking at you, you can already hear the lecture that is coming from his lips.
“Before you start reprimanding me, I know. I know what I did was wrong and in hindsight, I’m not even sure it was worth it. But please know I wouldn’t do something like this, I truly don't know what's come over me.” You have to consciously stop yourself from continuing to ramble on.
You don’t regret what happened, but if you think about it too long, you also don’t feel too great that it happened. Especially after everything that happened prior to your transfer to the PTMC.
“I’m not reporting you.” You finally feel like you can breathe.
“Thank you, I promise this will never happen again.”
You try to turn back and finish up your work but you can feel the stare he’s boring into your skull right now. And before you can ask what’s wrong, he cuts you off.
“Yeah, I have a feeling it won’t happen again, because you’ll be taking a double for the 4th.”
The 4th? As in this month’s 4th? Like THE Fourth of July? The 4th that’s coming in two days? That 4th?!
Abbot watches the wheels turning as the realization slowly dawns on you.
“I had Shen talk to your patient and he’s making sure it stays under wraps. However, he only agreed to handle it if you worked double into the holiday and I already told him you would.” He explains.
Despite the arrangement you had made with Abbot, you realize that's… fair.
And at that moment your impending headache has fully taken over.
As you can do nothing but finish out the rest of your shift for the next half hour you get a text. Seeing who it’s from unconsciously brings a smile to your face.

You let out a relieved sigh, and although neither Samira nor Trinity are here to see you, you still make an unconscious effort not to look too relieved that Trinity has cancelled.
She’s still a good friend –to be honest, you hope the feeling’s mutual– but too much has been on your mind as of late and you don’t need Trinity adding herself to the mix and making things more difficult.
Before you can hit send, you’re startled by Shen who is creeping over your shoulder.
“Jesus, Shen! Do I need to put a bell on you?”
He ignores you and leans closer into your personal space. “Who were you texting?”
You quickly and try to discreetly hit send and decide it’d be best to pretend you didn’t hear him. Denying it would confirm your guilt and that would only fuel him to push on and you’ve caused enough trouble for one night.
But Shen isn’t keen on letting it go. Instead of pushing he just stares. It’s a game you think you’re ready to play until he asks something that comes out of left field.
“Is it perhaps the girl from the New Years party?”
You can’t help the warmth that spreads through your body. You do your best to hold out but you struggle to keep a poker face.
“Ooohh, are we talking about Doc’s mystery girl?” Ellis chimes in as she passes by.
It seems that everyone but you has finished their night shift duties and is waiting for handoff during shift change. You pretend that you’re unaware of the crowd that is building near where you have stationed yourself to finish up your work, which by the looks of it, might ruin your plans of leaving on time. Regardless, you’re not going to give in to Shen’s childish teasing– you refuse.
You manage to drown out most of the crowd, but that doesn’t mean you’re not keeping an ear out to make sure the topic of their conversation doesn’t get too out of hand.
“Wait Doc has a mystery girl? Is she from work? Do we know her?” A new voice, that you recognize as Mateo, enters the conversation.
“Well if we knew all that, she wouldn’t be a mystery, now would she?” Mateo rolls his eyes at Ellis. You’re not surprised at how invested your colleagues have become in your love life.
Not after accidentally stumbling on everyone’s guesses on who it could’ve been on the betting board that had been left unattended a couple months ago. What spurred this ongoing bet was a night out you spent with your best friend Samira Mohan and other PTMC staff.
You both had attended the same high school but never got close until your first year of college, where she suggested being study buddies. She claimed that it would be helpful to have someone to bounce off the material from and it wouldn’t hurt to do so with a familiar face, to which you happily agreed. Things were fine–good even– as you got closer from spending a lot of time together.
But once you started med school, you knew you wanted to finish your schooling sooner, which led to longer nights studying by yourself and less of a social life than you had hoped for, but you managed to complete it within 3 years. Samira was still there for you and you guys checked up on each other whenever you could, but you started to see each other less and less as time went on.
You were able to move to Pennsylvania and start your residency at UPMC Presbyterian in which you did fairly well for yourself. It was even rumored that the higher ups were considering offering you a more permanent position once you have completed your residency.
Yet when the time came to do more cases independently, all of them went to shit. Your first independent case was a disaster and every case after that went completely south. You were reading EKG charts wrong, misdiagnosing patients, administering the wrong dosage of medicines.
Making mistakes not even MS3’s could make. Fortunately for your patients your chief attending was close by to fix your mistakes before it could turn into something serious. Unfortunately for you, your license was on the line for gross incompetence causing potential patient harm.
Had it not been for your chief attending who argued in your defense, claiming that the mistakes were caught before the patients were any danger, the only time you would’ve ever been able to step foot into another hospital was as a patient. While you were able to keep your license, the board still put you on probation and suggested that a transfer may be for the best.
That was almost a year ago. Nobody knows about the reason behind your transfer or your current probation except, of course, Abbot and the board. You’d like to believe that things have gotten better after that and you’ve moved on from it. At the very least you haven’t made mistakes like that since that day, if anything you should be coming off probation pretty soon.
The guilt and self loathing still manages to get the better of you on some nights and on those nights you chose to spend it with Samira at a nearby bar. You weren’t one to drink your sorrows away, the burning sensation and chemical flavor of ethanol just too overwhelming to enjoy, but it’s a place Samira introduced you to after some of her tiring shifts. Getting together for a drink after a long day wasn’t unusual, hell there wasn’t a night you went and didn’t spot a few other PTMC staff in its wake.
6 months ago started off like any other night out at the bar. It should’ve ended the same way. But something had shifted in the late hours of the night.
“Honestly, I’m just glad you were able to make it. I was kinda afraid you were going to bail on me this time.” You could tell Samira already had a few drinks in her system by the way her words are slightly slurring and how she is practically buzzing.
PTMC staff had gathered at the bar, just celebrating the new year and hoping for good things to come and you only stuck around this long to make sure Samira would get home okay.
“Really? I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.” Your sarcasm is evident, but it’s not enough to drown out the truth in your words. As if you could ever deny her of any demand she requested of you, no matter how big or small.
With only a couple of hours left until midnight, the bar was attracting more and more people. Before they could dive into a real conversation, Samira was pulled away by those you recognize as some of the newer day shift girlies who want to talk with her.
You didn’t mind. Instead you took the time to exchange the drink you have been nursing for something more favorable and non alcoholic. While you wait for your new drink, you mull over your new year's resolutions. There’s the typical ones, the ones you never commit to past February, like eating healthier, workout more, fix your sleep schedule, etc.
Get over this useless pining.
Ever since Samira walked into your life, it’s as if the world flipped on its head. You found more clarity in the small world you orbit. Like looking at the sun for years, only to finally feel its warmth. Life was good, but with Samira it became meaningful; things just made sense.
What you believed to just be simple admiration for your friend, soon turned to long nights spent in your imagination. Imagining what it would be like to wake up beside each other, making meals for another, arguing over the building laundry in the hamper, spending the rest of your lives intertwined together. You couldn’t picture life without her now that you’ve known her.
You told yourself, you would be okay with just being in her life, but you could only lie to yourself for so long. The more time you spent with her, the greedier you became. And you learned from a young age that nothing could be earned from your greed. Which is why you were committed to getting rid of this crush.
“Here you go.” The bartender places down a whiskey sour in front of you.
“Oh but I didn’t order this.” Your attempts to correct it are futile as the bartender has already left before you could get the right one. Now you were stuck nursing another drink.
“I think you have my drink.”
You turn around to see Trinity at the other end of the bar, holding what looks to be your Shirley Temple. You’re surprised to see her here honestly, but then again if Dennis is here it’s likely that Trinity isn’t too far behind.
She comes up to you to switch drinks and just as she’s about to walk back to her seat, you stop her.
“You let Dennis drag you out tonight?”
She chuckles. “That would be the likely story, wouldn’t it?” She settles into the seat next to yours. “But no, I actually asked him to come with me tonight.”
Oh. That’s different.
“Oh.” It’s all you can say and you look off into the distance before your face gives away more than you intend.
Trinity notices your far away look and immediately tries to shut down your train of thought. “No. Don’t do that.” She places her drink down now turning fully towards you.
“Do what? I’m not doing anything.” But the mischievous smile taking over your face says otherwise.
“That.” Gesturing to your face. “Don’t try to imply that I’m here for anything other than free drinks. It’s been a long shift.”
It’s only then do you notice the line of empty drinks at her seat. “No yeah I get it.”
Trinity finally gets less defensive, thinking you are going to drop the subject.
“I mean what better way to relieve some stress than to hang out with those you care about.”
She stood up, preparing to stomp back to her seat in a perfectly mature, adult fashion, until you caught her arm again.
“I’m kidding, I’m kidding, don’t be like that. I just expected you with a bit more company, is all.”
Judging by the look on her face, she’s confused by what you mean, thinking you’re talking about Dennis, until it hits her that you’re referring to Garcia. As you watched the instant her face fell, you knew you were way over the line.
“I’m sorry, that’s none of my business. I shouldn’t have said anything.” The regret and apologies fall off your tongue before you can stop them.
She sighs. “It’s been complicated.”
You wince. You fullheartedly expected something snarky and mean to come at you. You wouldn’t have blamed her. It’d probably be best to quickly switch topics though.
“Whoa, What happened?”
Crap. That wasn't a new topic. That was the exact same topic. You hadn't even touched the whiskey, so you couldn't blame the alcohol. What was wrong with you?
Trinity gives you a pointed look as she contemplates her answer. “What about you? Why are you by yourself?”
No! You weren’t prepared for deflection!
You sighed. “Just here to keep Samira company.” It’s not a total lie. A little omission of truth never hurt anyone.
“Oh really? Didn’t know you could keep someone company from the other side of the bar.”
She’s seen through your lies! Abort! Abort!
“Of course you can. Like you said, it's been a long shift so I decided to sit down and be with her in spirit.”
She says nothing more and looks at you with a hint of satisfaction and something else you can’t quite decipher. All you know is she looks so certain that she has come out on top of this situation and judging from your lack of a comeback, she’s right.
Before you can try and derail this conversation your train of thought is interrupted by the sound of laughter. There from across the room, Victoria, Dennis, and Mel are in conversation.
And in the center of it all stands Samira, with her head thrown back, her body barely containing the heavenly laughter that falls from lips. All it does is remind you of the one new year’s resolution of top priority.
“Looks like we’re on the same boat.” Trinity mumbles under her breath, taking another swig of her drink.
You finally snap out of it. “What was that?”
She shrugs it off. “Oh, nothing.”
You both go back to quietly nursing your drinks, until Trinity suddenly throws back hers and slams it on the counter.
“Give me your phone.” Trinity says with her hand out to you.
“What?!” Startled by the commanding tone, but pulling out your phone from your pocket and obeying nonetheless.
She flips your phone around where your face ID is required. “Unlock it.”
“What are you going to do?!” You try to look at what she’s going through on your phone but she keeps the screen hidden from you. You try to snatch your phone back to no avail.
“Just shut up real quick.” She chuckles, words starting to slur, finding your failing attempts amusing.
Before you can get truly irritated, she hands it back.
“Here.”
You quickly scan your phone and see nothing wrong with it. You go through your recent apps and see she has added her number to your phone. You look to Trinity for clarification.
“I may know a few things to help with your staring problem.”
You’re confused but can assume she’s referring to the not so subtle longing gazes.
Before you can get any real answers, she has already disappeared into the crowd that is gathering together to countdown the seconds to midnight, completely unaware of the burning glare from across the room.
Six months after that chaotic night at the bar and the rest was history.
You were going to take Trin’s advice and finally be done brushing off Samira’s lingering touches and flirtatious compliments as "best friend tendencies."
Turning back to your gossiping coworkers, the old embarrassment was gone. This time, you felt confident.
“Well my current and future gambling addicts in the making, you are in luck, because you will get all the answers to your curious questions after this weekend.”
This causes an uproar amongst your colleagues but you pay no mind as you’re just finishing up the last of your charts.
And just like that, saved by the bell, with only 2 minutes left to spare, the morning shift is already here for handoff.
“Doc!!”
Samira comes in headed straight towards you so you can make your rounds together. Seeing as she is by herself this time you can safely conclude that Trinity and Dennis are running late… again.
“Mimi!!”
You both go over patients together and all you can think about is the nature of your feelings. Just as you finish up your rounds you remind her of the snacks in the break room.
“Oh, right. There’s some leftover donuts Shen brought for the staff if you’re feeling a little hungry. I also left an iced coffee and a red bull for you and Trin in the fridge, so you guys can duke it out for whichever ones you guys want.”
“Thank you!”
Samira cups your face in her hands, pinching the soft gathering of your cheeks, before hugging you and squishing her face into yours. “You are a literal angel heaven sent.”
It’s gestures like these that have you feeling confident you are not reading into things and you intend to make the first move by the 4th in hopes of taking your relationship further.
You could only hope you can get through the chaotic holiday shift before then.

genuinely where did the samira hate train come from???? like why am i looking up samira mohan and the first few posts are about how people don’t like her??! ykw you guys can have ur opinions but keep ur negativity away from me and the pitt women PLEASE I CANT HANDLE
i just don’t understand why people don’t extend the same amount of grace to santos that they do to robby.
i’ve seen people say they think santos is being immature and unprofessional for not letting langdon talk to her, but people forget that her only impression of him was catching onto him doing something that put patients at risk, only to be berated and humiliated by him in front of her colleagues. and when he comes back, whether intentionally or unintentionally, he treats her like a learning doctor, which can feel demeaning to the 10 months she spent learning at the ptmc.
yet nobody holds that much disdain for robby when he also actively shuts langdon out, which in my opinion can be seen as immature as well, because if he really was going to shut him like that, why not transfer him out of the ptmc or why even let him have his job back at all? i’d also like to point out that langdon is santos’ senior, so she can’t control the fact that she works with him, but robby is his boss. he can control whether or not he wants to work alongside him yet he makes a bigger stink about it than santos.
and yes santos can be mean and abrasive around her colleagues and that can be a reason to not like her but i don’t think she’s ever taken it as far as robby did when he belittled mohan for her panic attack.
not only did he invalidate and diminish her feelings in front of her peers and colleagues, he also gives an invitation to langdon, the only other man in the room, to join in on the mocking. yet instead of receiving backlash, people run to make sure we all understand where he’s coming from, that his lash outs are stemming from his depression.
but 3 episodes prior to his lash out, we see santos’ sh scars. the audience knows that santos is dealing with her own traumas yet nobody takes that into consideration when thinking that her abrasive nature might be a coping mechanism she’s developed because of her own traumas she’s experienced…
LIKE GUYS PLEASE TAKE THE SANTOS SLANDER AND LIBEL ELSEWHERE I DONT WANT TO SEE IT
i was thinking about posting a samira mohan from the pitt fanfic with a jealous reader after seeing episode 9, but somehow accidentally added trinity santos into the mix as a love interest…. IDK WHAT TO DO DO I KEEP WRITING IS THAT SOMETHING THE PEOPLE WANNA SEE DO I HAVE TO START OVER
