Sonoma State University is a clothing optional campus. You are allowed to be naked on campus if you want. But there were sanitary concerns, SO - if you are naked you are not allowed to sit on a public seat like a bench or anything unless you have a towel or other cloth with you to put down before you sit.

The only circumstances I could see nudity being an actual threat to the people around someone is if they're like, covered with highly infectious sores or something. I wonder sometimes if the nudity taboo is just sublimated fear of other people's (potentially infectious) fluids. Like if the leaky bits are covered they're less likely to infect you, which I guess at least sort of makes sense.

I'm a practising naturist, and this used to be a naturist blog. I don't take photos of myself very often, so it was pretty much all reblogs of other naturists' photos.

Tumblr says it allows nudity but not sex. In practice both halves of that are unreliable. Every naturist blog has "Naturism is not porn" in its header, and I promise you some of us mean it. But no naturist photo on tumblr is more than two or three links away from a porn blog.

My hope when I started reblogging naturist photos was to do exactly what the previous rebloggers here are talking about: to make nonsexual nudity so commonplace that it wouldn't be seen as sexual any more. I mean, hey, it works for classical art.

Not because sex is bad, I should clarify, but because nudity will only ever be normalized if it's desexualized (and vice versa; the two must happen together or not at all). People don't like being sexualized when they're just living their lives, so they won't get naked unless they're confident they won't be sexualized.

My hopes were dashed by two things, either of which I could and really should have predicted beforehand. First, when only a few people reblog nudity, the immediate effect is to draw an audience of porn bloggers, because at that point the desexualization effect hasn't kicked in. I've blocked well over a thousand blogs for reblogging naturist photos from me in amongst porn. And second, I have the persuasive powers of pond mud. In my forty-eight years of life I have yet to discover how to get anyone, at all, to try anything I suggest or follow any example I set. And this strategy will only work if we do it en masse.

OP is waiting for "a critical mass of social acceptance". So is everyone else. Someone has to go first. I tried to be that someone but people don't follow where I lead.

Since gender and AGAB have been referenced a couple of posts up, I can tell you something about the >1000 porn bloggers who I've had to block for overstepping my clearly-stated boundaries on this issue: on this website where trans people congregate to express their sexuality, every single person who's done this to me and whose blog gives any indication of their gender has been a cisgender man.

I think step one is to dress to your comfort level, if it’s cold cover yourself in blankets and if needed, clothes! You don’t have to be constantly naked all the time to be a nudist.

As for mental roadblocks, I think it’s useful to view it less as a “countercultural” thing, if that makes sense. The label of “nudist”, while useful, definitely draws a line between people who are nudists and people who are textiles. However there’s plenty of textiles who would never consider themselves nudists who sleep naked, don’t bother putting on clothes after a shower, or skinny dip often.

I think the main issue is nudity is Weird and Bad because we’ve been taught that our whole lives, so the way to get over it is the same way you get over other beliefs hammered into you as a child, so try being nude for an extended period of time and see if you feel differently at the end of it (Ive also heard some people try going nude at gym locker rooms or saunas to get themselves comfortable, though I haven’t done this myself) and if that doesn’t work and you’re still determined to overcome your feelings towards nudity (no shame in trying something and realizing you just don’t like it ^^) then try baby steps like not dressing up after a shower for a little while, being nude more often with a partner if you have one, or locker rooms and saunas.

I'm guessing you live in the Northern Hemisphere? Wait till it warms up a bit. You don't need to die of hypothermia to call yourself a nudist. I wear clothes some of the day for about six months of the year and all day for the coldest four months or so (which where I live is from May to September).

Try it alone in your own home first. To take your mind off "oh I'm naked and it's weird" in the early days, try doing something naked that takes your attention elsewhere -- reading a book that you find gripping, watching a movie you love, doing your most engrossing hobby. It does have to be something that's not sexual for you (nothing wrong with being sexual in your own home but it won't help make being naked feel normal).

I'm afraid I don't have such helpful suggestions about getting into social naturism. For me that opportunity came about 23 years ago when I found an ad for a nude walking group in the newspaper. I gradually got to know other naturists through that group.
