You could write about your favorite characters doing nothing but errands for 5000 something words and at least one other person would love it as much as you. You could put them in a room talking about the randomest things and it'll still be appealing.

Fanfiction is beautiful because it lets you explore these characters not only as plot drivers, but people in their own right.

And it's done for no monetary purpose, whatsoever. There's no financial compensation for the time spent in writing fics. Fic writers do it for the love of the game and share it to connect with others who'd also enjoy their stories.

It's always been about connection- to the characters you write, to your own imagination and ideas, to other people in the fandom.
