This roof replacement in Kyle, Texas involved a roofing system that was just over 20 years old. The homeowner had thankfully avoided known interior leaks, but once the old materials were removed, we found deteriorated OSB decking around plumbing penetrations and along sections of the roof edge.

Some areas had weakened enough to break apart and leave open voids beneath the roofing system.

A new roof installation in Kyle, Texas, built for more than curb appeal.

This GAF Class 4 impact-rated roofing system was installed in Pewter Gray with metal vents, pipe boots and roofing accessories throughout—no plastic components.

Class 4 is the highest UL 2218 impact-resistance classification. It does not make a roof hail-proof, but it provides a higher tested level of impact resistance than lower-rated roofing products.

A qualifying Class 4 roof may also earn an insurance premium credit of roughly 15% to 35%, depending on the carrier, policy, territory and required documentation. That potential savings matters even more when many Texas policies carry separate 1% or 2% wind-and-hail deductibles based on the insured dwelling amount.

Roof acting dramatic? 😅

I promise I did not climb a downtown tower to hang a Roof Shepherd flag.

I was out checking the area in Taylor and tried to stop by Louie Mueller Barbecue for lunch, but they were closed when I came through.

Still good spending time around Taylor and staying connected with the Central Texas communities I serve. Roofing, painting, leak concerns, storm documentation, exterior repairs, and property protection all tie back to staying ahead of small issues before they become expensive ones.

This roof replacement was completed with GAF Timberline UHDZ Class 4 impact-rated shingles and all-metal roof accessories — no rubber or plastic accessory shortcuts.

Class 4 does not mean hail-proof. It means the shingle passed the highest UL 2218 impact-resistance classification, which includes testing with a 2-inch steel ball impact.

For Texas homeowners, that product choice can matter. A lot of homeowners I work with have reported meaningful insurance premium discounts after installing approved Class 4 roofing materials. Some have told me their savings were as much as $700 to $1,800 per year.

That is not guaranteed. Every carrier, policy, property, and documentation requirement is different.

This is why the roofing system, accessory details, product selection, and documentation all matter.

I forgot to bring my gloves up with me on a roof and ended up with what looked and felt like second-degree burns on my thumb and part of my palm. Blisters and everything.

The part that got me was that it was only supposed to be around 90°.

Poor ventilation is not just uncomfortable for whoever is on the roof. Trapped attic heat can make the HVAC system work harder, increase cooling demand, and contribute to faster shingle aging over time.

But the lesson is real:

Ventilation matters.

Gloves matter.

And shortcuts have a way of collecting payment.

I was in Granite Shoals after recent hail activity, checking local conditions and speaking with city staff to better understand how the area held up.

That does not mean every roof is damaged. Hail impact can be uneven. One home may show visible collateral damage while another nearby home may not.

For homeowners, the practical signs to document are usually gutters, downspouts, roof vents, soft metals, window screens, fencing, granule buildup, and any new leak activity inside the home.

This is what roof work can reveal once the surface comes off. Rotten wood is usually not the original problem. It is evidence that water found a path and stayed active long enough to damage the material underneath.

Roof penetration leak in Lakeway, Texas

Roof leaks are not always caused by missing shingles.

This Lakeway inspection involved water getting through around a small roof penetration tied to water-heater equipment. The leak was enough to activate the home’s emergency water shut-off system.

That is why roof penetrations, flashing, sealant, vents, pipe boots, and surrounding shingles need to be checked together before guessing at the repair.
