Auckland Harbour Bridge - Darly Royan Paraha

The Voice came. Seductive. Swim out! Swim out under the harbour bridge. No tricks! We’re playing for keeps!

Dream-state. I prepared. To my boy I wrote: if I die, I didn’t really want to. Such a wild, stormy night. By the bridge my car looked naked parked alone. A meandering hedgehog, my only witness, foraging, paid me no heed. Come, come! That voice, a siren. The bridge is huge. Cold steel, wind whipping, tempest through cathedral girders. A melancholy choir. Barnacles on rocks slice my skin. I see blood, feel pain and am comforted. Come! Swim! No tricks! We’re playing for keeps!

Thighs white, in water cold brown. Wet hair glued to my face. Currents, eddies, the water is alive and greedy. I dive and smash into unseen concrete. My wrist is hurt. Later. A lifetime perhaps? On the beach, in the harbour, under the bridge. Crawled out of the water half dead. Lying exhausted. Spent. Holding tight to the oily sand Tears warm on a cold cheek.

In the middle of the night. In my madness, all alone. But listen. In my ear the voice still whispers…. no tricks! I play for keeps.

Antoinette completed her MA at The School of Media Arts in 2011 where she created an installation based project that has become ‘The Sick Bay’. Her work explores thematic narrative derived from hybridity, horror conventions, and anthropomorphic association.

Tanya Te Miringa Te Rorarangi Ruka is a Māori artist of Ngā Puhi, Ngati Pakau and Waitaha descent.

As a regenerative practitioner she explores this innate relationship to nature, and as a Māori artist she relates to this through Māori cosmology and mythologies. Rukaʼs work is held in public and private collections nationally and internationally. Her video installations have shown at various art and film festivals around the world including opening the 5th International Indigenous Film Festival in Kathmandu Nepal.

Marina Grey was born in Siberia and educated in New Zealand. She uses her technical drawing skills to draw fantastical imaginary scenes. She lives with her husband Lee and her three wild children, one of whom is a dog.
