It had been a quiet shift. Minor calls and lots of downtime. That usually meant sharks circling until they caught blood in the water. And, well, Eddie had made the mistake of asking Buck if he'd taken the laundry out of the dryer before they'd left for work that morning in full earshot of the peanut gallery. Hen had snapped her book shut with a resounding snap, Chimney perked up like a meerkat, even Bobby looked up from his chopping board. Ravi, at least, had the decency to hunker down in his seat and pretend to be texting someone.
The interrogation was instant. Dizzying. Hen and Chim lobbing questions and jokes back and forth with a terrifying efficiency.
How long has it been now? Couch killing your back, Buckaroo? Is he driving you crazy yet, Diaz? Are his socks everywhere? Do you split the bills fifty-fifty? Is Christopher sleeping okay, you know, with all the snoring?
And Eddie had watched, a frown tugging at the furrow of his brow, Buck shrink further into the couch with every question. It wasn't until Bobby asked what their long term plan was that Eddie intervened.
It's been two months. We share the bed. I missed him while I was gone, it's nice having him around all the time. His socks were everywhere long before he moved in. Yes, we go halfsies on the bills. Buck's snoring is white noise now, we struggled to sleep without it in Texas.
He'd ignored Bobby's question. Couldn't touch that one. Not in front of everyone else. Not when he hadn't plucked up the courage to talk to Buck about it at home quite yet. And he would! He was working on it. Because living with Buck was... Revolutionary. Eddie couldn't fathom why they hadn't been doing this the whole time. Because home had never felt so much like home before. And he wanted it to be permanent. Not this delicate limbo everyone seemed to think they were stuck in.
Eddie wanted to carpool to work every single day, never wanted to drive his stupid fucking vomit-smelling Honda again. He wanted to divvy up the chores every Monday. Wanted to clean the dishes whilst Buck dried every night for the rest of his life. Wanted to crawl into bed beside Buck and, well, he wanted a lot more than that. He was working on that too. He just needed a little more time.
(or: eddie knows what he wants, buck doesn't, they slow dance)
listen listen listen— post-lightning. eddie is scared, so utterly terrified, unable to physically move (except for basic needs) for days, until buck wakes up and the moment he does, eddie takes a sigh of relief and then proceeds to hide for hours and hours in the gym where he starts heavy lifting, like double the weight he’s used to lift, and this goes on and on and on, and buck notices that there’s something wrong with his best friend, he needs to take just one look at eddie to just know. he doesn’t know what, tho. and he finds out one day, when bobby calls him because somehow eddie got hurt on a call and that has something to do with the heavy weights eddie was lifting before they left the firehouse. and buck prods and prods and prods until eddie crumples and breaks down completely. and you know what? he is doing it because he wasn’t able to lift buck up, and is convinced that it’s his fault that buck had to be hanging over the ladder for so long and— buck literally stops breathing for a second, because wow, there’s so much to unpack, but he’s going to kiss eddie first. then they’ll go from there.
"Just tell me what you want!"
"Stop it, Eddie! Stop making this more difficult than it already is!"
"If it's so difficult, then maybe you shouldn't be moving out!"
"I have to!"
"Then, tell me why!"
"I can't."
Buck felt like he was already crying, his words coming out pleading and shaky. Eddie was no better, his hair haphazard and messy from irritated hands and his eyes looking suspiciously shiny.
To an outsider it would look like they were currently going through a break-up. Buck couldn't even appreciate the irony in that right now.
"Are you —" Eddie made an aborted movement to reach for his hand, "Are you in some kind of trouble and are protecting me by moving out? Because, if so —"
"No." Maybe he should say that the IRS is after him for bad returns and he didn't want to drag Eddie down with him. "No, it's not like that. I— I just have to do this. We'll both be better off this way."
"No," Eddie said vehemently, stepping closer until they were toe-to-toe. "No. You said you weren't getting what you wanted from here and that's why you had to go. Don't turn this into some kind of martyr sacrifice. I told you that I want you here, that I don't need space. So whatever it is that you're not getting, we can figure it out, Buck!"
Buck was deeply regretting using those words. But he hadn't expected the intensity of Eddie's push back to Buck presenting him with the lease from his new place that just he had to sign and blurted out the truth. And now Eddie had latched onto them like a leech.
"It's not something to figure out, Eddie, so, just please —"
"Well, how can I know that if you don't spit it out! We're just going in circles right now and yet, I'm still no closer to knowing what the fuck I apparently can't give you!"
"You!"
Disbelief at the way he was willingly ruining his life and the relief of finally letting the truth out warred within him as he took a step back. His back collided gently with the fridge and the tears flowed free.
"You," Buck choked out again when Eddie looked stunned into silence. "I want you. And I know I can't have you. Not the way I want. So, I have to move out, because staying here," Buck laughed ruefully, "It'll kill me to have you within reach and yet not close enough. I have to go, Eddie, I have to. I need to save myself this time."
"Buck—"
"Save it," Buck snapped, cutting off Eddie's strained whisper harshly. Eddie didn't deserve rudeness, ever, but Buck didn't have it in him to listen to any plaintive words. He knew he was very close to breaking fully and he needed to be away from Eddie before that happened. "I'll be out of the house by the end of the week," he spoke clinically, wiping away his tears. He had to stick to the facts, anything else would be a one-way road to a total breakdown. "I need a couple of hours to pack everything, so just tell me when you'll be out so that I can come over. You don't have to worry about anything else."
Eddie wasn't saying anything and Buck wasn't about to stick around for him to find his words.
So, turning his back to the love of his life, Buck walked away, not looking back. All he could manage before the door shut behind him was a somber, "Goodbye, Eddie."
Hearing Maddie say 'Evan?' was all the permission his mind and heart had needed to finally let go after being held captive so that he could mechanically drive to his sister's house.
It was odd that heartbreak would bring any kind of relief but that was what he felt as he sunk to the floor with his sister's hands cupping his face and running through his hair. Relief that he had Maddie because when he came to LA, there was no one. And he'd just lost everything.
But at least he had Maddie this time.
~~~
Eddie knew he looked pathetic. He hadn't slept, hadn't eaten, hadn't showered. He was wearing a hoodie that was too big and falling off his shoulders and he was pretty sure there were tear tracks imprinted into his cheeks.
But he needed to see him. So he got in the car and just drove.
There were no greetings exchanged when the door swung open. Just a hoarse, "Please let me see him".
"Is he about to hear something he won't like?" Maddie asked him plainly. Eddie had to respect her straightforwardness.
He shook his head. "I— I don't know what I want to say right now. I just want to see him. Please."
He didn't know what Maddie saw but she nodded him in. He needed to remember to send her something in gratitude.
"He's out back. Take your time."
"Thank you."
Buck was faced away from him, sitting in the sunlight, head tilted up into the sky. He didn't move as Eddie noisily shut the sliding door behind him.
"Chim, I told you I'll be fine. You don't need to come out here every twenty minutes."
Eddie didn't say anything. He just went up to him, needing to look at his face. He stopped a couple of feet away but it was enough.
Tear tracks stained his face too and the dark circles under his eyes were the worst that he'd ever seen on Buck. But with the sun shining off his unkempt curls and splotchy face, Eddie thought he looked ethereal. He felt reprieve for the first time since Buck had shown him those godforsaken lease papers yesterday.
Buck's eyebrows furrowed when he didn't speak. Eddie wanted to touch them with his thumb and smooth them away. He wanted to touch Buck forever and never let go.
The joy was seeing the blue of Buck's eyes was short-lived, because once they landed on him, Buck had jumped further away, the chair crashing to the ground between them in his haste.
"Leave, Eddie."
"Buck, please —"
"No! I don't want to hear about how much you value me as a friend or how I'll always have a place in your life. This is cruel, Eddie! You're being cruel to me right now."
"I wasn't about to say any of that!"
Really, Buck cutting him off was getting tedious now.
"Y-you weren't?"
"No! So, will you please just —"
Frustrated, Eddie stopped and marched up to Buck, putting his hands on his face and staring deep into his eyes. He had to make Buck see.
"I don't know what I'm feeling right now, but I'll tell you what I do know. I know Chris found me two hours later still inconsolable. I know that only his threat of calling you was what made me snap out of it. I know that I only forced myself to eat because of Chris, even when I know it'd all came spewing out later. I know that he was worried sick about me all night and yet, all I could think about was you.
"I didn't sleep. I didn't want to sleep without you next to me. I felt so cold and miserable in that big bed. This hoodie was the only thing that was able to soothe me. You walking away from me felt like my world had shattered and I could do nothing to glue it back together."
Eddie pulled him down, his eyes closing as their foreheads touched. His next words were so soft that he thought Buck couldn't hear them. "Last night was the worst night of my life, Buck. I can't go through that again. Please come back. Come back to me. We can figure everything else out, I promise. I may be confused about my feelings, but I do know, without a doubt, that I don't want to be without you. Not for another second."
The whimper that came out of him when Buck wrapped his arms around his waist and pulled him in was no surprise. He'd spent all night craving Buck's touch, his warm embrace that envelopes him so wholly. It felt like heaven when he ducked his head to nuzzle into Buck's neck, knowing that he'd never be safer than right there.
"Okay," Buck murmured, chest rumbling under his cheek, "Okay, Eddie, I'll come back to you."
~~~
The door closing echoed throughout the empty house. Eddie knew Chris would've left for school by now. It was a relief — he didn't need to see them at odds like this.
Buck stayed close to the wall by the door, his eyes full of fear and dread, aimed right at him. Eddie hated it.
He approached him. When he was within reach, he lay his palms on Buck's chest, fingers gentle and spread wide. As they trailed up slowly, he felt the way his breath hitched.
"Eddie —"
"I want to," Eddie said, unwavering. His hands overlapped behind Buck's neck. "I want to. Will you let me?"
For a long moment, Buck just stared and Eddie stared right back. And then Buck nodded.
He wasn't on his tiptoes when their lips met, but it was a near thing. He didn't think he'd ever need that to kiss anyone. It was exciting.
The kiss was chaste, just a press of lips. Eddie didn't know what to expect and Buck didn't want to push. When he fell back onto the balls of his feet, lips parted and tingling, he gazed into Buck's hesitant eyes and knew.
Eddie was never going back.
"I don't expect —"
"God, shut up, Buck."
Their second kiss started hungry from Eddie's side, with Buck following not too far behind. He was quick to get over the initial shock of being abruptly dragged down to meet eager lips when Eddie's fingers effortlessly slipped into his hair, blunt nails scratching deliciously at his scalp.
Eddie gasped when he realized that he was being moved, twisted around and pushed up against the wall that Buck had just been occupying. Eddie found that being cornered whilst being kissed senseless was the most exhilarating thing he'd ever felt. Being caged up against a wall wasn't scary at all, not when it was Buck.
Nothing would ever be scary again.
"Bed," Eddie moaned out when Buck freed his lips to start kissing down his neck, worrying the sensitive skin with his teeth. "Take me to bed, Buck."
Buck wretched himself away, surprise taking over his features. "Really?" he asked in wonder.
"Yes, really," Eddie grinned. He cupped his cheek, thumb tracing the edge of the dark circle. "I'm in this. There's no getting rid of me. Ever."
Buck's bright laugh struck him in his heart, making him feel dopey and dazed as Buck led them to their bedroom. He knew then that he'd do anything to hear that giddy laugh again.
For the rest of his life.
thinking thinking thinking… about eddie and buck’s morning after their first hookup. they didn’t do anything too crazy, just some handjobs and blowjobs maybe? anyway they fell asleep curled around each other and fully knowing they are loved and they love, freely, completely. and it’s amazing, it’s the best feeling ever, exhilarating to some degree, even. and everything is great until eddie finds the bed cold and empty. but then— then he hears noises coming from the kitchen and finds buck leaning against the counter waiting for the pancake to be ready to be flipped, so he sneaks up and plasters himself against his boyfriend. it’s like the first time he allows himself to think of buck as his boyfriend and just the thought is breathtaking so it’s not his fault that as soon as one of buck’s hands lands on him he starts giggling like a kid.
and he can’t help but leaning towards the other man to kiss him, to take what he has always thought he couldn’t have, and everything is fucking great, amazing, incredible, and eddie loves his life. at least until the moment buck picks him up from the hips and effortlessly manhandles him to put him on the counter. then he kisses him and winks, reminding eddie that he has breakfast to prepare, and that leaves eddie on the kitchen counter looking as dumbfounded as a deer caught in the headlights.
suddenly, eddie falls quiet, mouth slightly agape and eyes lost, and it doesn’t take much for buck to notice.
the thing is: nobody has ever been able to pick eddie up and actually manhandle him, nobody has ever had so much strength and decided to use it to love him, to hold him, to support him. buck does, buck is strong and capable and gentle and looks at eddie as if he were everything good in the world, and loves eddie like no one ever has.

"Eddie, c'mon!"
"Leave it alone, Buck!"
"You expect me to forget about the fact that you just kissed me?!"
"Yes!"
"Eddie!"
Buck knocked on the bedroom door again, to no avail. Sighing deeply, Buck closed his eyes and slumped forward against the locked door, unwittingly replaying the last few minutes in his mind.
He truly did not see it coming. And with the way Eddie was acting, it didn't seem like he was expecting to kiss Buck either.
They were at Buck's new place, testing out recipes for his big housewarming dinner scheduled a couple of days away. Buck had been struggling to pick a menu, overwhelmed with vastness of the choices available to him (from his own repertoire and online) and the pressure to make it perfect for everyone. It was going to be their first real family dinner following months of gloom and Buck had taken the initiative for once. With Eddie (and Chris) back and Bobby better and Mara officially adopted and the Hans having welcomed their son into the world, it was time they had a positive gathering. A celebration.
Except, two hours into researching and planning had found him inundated with a myriad ideas and no hope of narrowing them down. So, he'd done what he should have done in the first place — accepted Eddie's standing offer to help.
Eddie had turned up and converted his haphazard concepts into a concrete list. And together, they had accomplished a lot in a half hour, managing to shortlist Buck's recipes based on his ability to make them and the time it took to cook it all.
"Alright. This sounds amazing, Buck! If you do a trial run now, you won't be nervous about how the newer recipes will turn out on the day."
"Yeah, you're right."
"So, which one do you want to start with?"
"None of them."
"Excuse me?"
Buck ducked his head, shy with what he was about to admit. "I... actually have another recipe I want to try out first."
Eddie frowned. "Okay? Why didn't you write it down?"
"Because it's Pepa's Queso fundido."
Eddie's mouth parted in surprise. "What?"
"Yeah," Buck rubbed at the back of his neck, chuckling nervously. "I called her before you got here to get some ideas and she told me about it. It sounds really easy to make and Pepa said it was your favourite dish growing up, so that pretty much sealed the deal. I was going to surprise you with it."
"You were?" Eddie asked, still looking a little stunned.
"Yeah, but I can't anymore," he groaned, pouting at his friend. "I really don't want to cook it for the first time on the day and we're on shift tomorrow, so today is the only time I can trial it. I'm just annoyed the surprise is ruined."
"Buck," Eddie breathed, stepping up to him, hand on his shoulder. "I promise any queso fundir you make will be a surprise even if I'm standing next to you the whole time. You haven't ruined anything."
Buck grinned at him. "Yeah?"
"Yeah," Eddie reassured him, matching his smile.
"Okay then! Time for some chopping! But you're not allowed to do anything because this is still a surprise."
"Buck. C'mon, it'll go by faster if I do some of the chopping. Or even the grating! If this is my Tia's recipe, then I know there's a monstrous amount of cheese involved."
"... fine. But only because I hate grating."
Soon, the sounds of prep floated through the air in Buck's new kitchen. Buck started chopping the veggies while Eddie took over grating the three types of cheese involved. It was quiet until Eddie chuckled, seemingly out of nowhere.
"What?" Buck asked curiously.
"Just... this takes me back," Eddie explained, eyes alight with memory.
"Oh yeah?"
"I was stuck with the grating back then too. Sophia used to say I had to do the 'yucky' job since I was the oldest and Adri was too young to do more than hand her the ingredients as she cooked." Eddie shook his head fondly, his smile turning sweeter. "I loved it anyway. It was a simple yet delicious dish we could make whenever and it meant we could have as many tortilla chips as we wanted. And believe me, we ate a concerning amount."
"That amazing, Eds."
"Hmm. It was one of the best times I spent with them."
After the initial prep was done, Eddie was delegated to sit on the counter whilst Buck busted out the iron skillet.
"You sure I don't need to stick this in the oven? I didn't want to believe it when Pepa said I didn't really need to, but you get that crispy top with it."
Eddie smiled, rolling his eyes good-naturedly. "Yes, Buck, no oven necessary. It's just as amazing without."
Once Buck had checked that all the cheese had melted into that pleasing stretchy consistency and switched off the stove, he added the pico de gallo garnish and reached for a spoon.
"Sorry, I don't have any chips to hand right now," he said, carefully scooping up a portion and twisting the spoon to get all the cheese, "but tell me what you think."
Eddie inclined closer wordlessly and wrapped his mouth around the utensil, his eyes never straying from Buck's face. They lit up as he proceeded to chew.
"Good?" Buck asked tentatively.
Still chewing, Eddie opted to smile broadly and nod.
"Good," Buck sighed out, relieved, moving to taste it himself. "I think this will be a good alternative for your usual dips. And who doesn't love tortilla chips, right?"
There was no answer.
Buck was too busy taking a bite to notice. "Mmmf, you weren't kidding. I'd want to eat unhealthy amounts of this, too. No wonder it's your favourite, Eds, I don't think I can stop making this now."
"Yeah."
Buck was being hauled forward then, his chin tipped up as soft lips pressed to his. The spoon dropped the floor as his fingers slackened with surprise, the metal clattering noisily on the tile below.
Buck's eyes dropped shut as he melted into it after a moment, kissing back gently, hands coming up to frame Eddie's face. But as he tried to angle their lips and deepen the kiss, Eddie ripped himself away, his eyes wide with panic and shock.
"Eddie..." Buck murmured, his mind finally catching up and sending his heart racing. His best friend had just kissed him.
However, Eddie didn't reply, hopping off the counter and sprinting out of the kitchen. There was the distinct sound of a door slamming shut by the time Buck managed to pry his feet off the floor and trail after him.
"That's my bedroom!"
"So?"
"You can't hide in there forever!"
"Watch me!"
"What about Chris, Eddie? You gonna leave him to his own devices?"
"I've had a good run being his father. It's your turn now!"
Buck choked out an incredulous laugh, feeling slightly ridiculous shouting at a door. Did he unknowingly step through the Looking Glass with Alice?
"I will break down this door, man, new house be damned."
Silence rang out from the other side. Buck decided that he'd wait about twenty seconds before he'd follow through on his promise.
He'd counted down to five when the lock finally clicked.
The door creaked open to reveal a red faced Eddie, biting his lip, eyes cast to the floor. "I don't know why I did that," he whispered.
Buck shuffled forward carefully, stopping when their feet touched. "Do you regret it?" he asked, voice hushed. That was the only real question at the moment. They could figure out everything else.
Eddie didn't meet his eyes. His head shook side to side.
Exhaling slowly, Buck closed the last of the distance, gathering Eddie into his arms. It was slow, but Eddie embraced him back, nestling into him with a sigh.
"I think I got it wrong, why Queso fundido is my favourite."
"Yeah?" Buck hummed, palm gently soothing up and down Eddie's back.
"I think I like the process of making it more than just eating it."
"Why's that?"
Eddie pulled back from his chest then, finally looking him in the eye. His cheeks were still flushed prettily and there was a cute little smile adorning his lips.
"Because making it always meant that I get to spend time with the ones I love."
Buck made a pleased sound, his lips splitting open in a blinding grin as he tilted forward to nudge his nose with Eddie's and rest against his forehead.
He closed his eyes, letting out a dreamy sigh.
"I think that's the perfect reason to call anything your most favourite thing in the world."
Eddie: i have to tell you something
Buck: oh god. wheres the body?
Eddie: wheres- what? you think i killed someone?
Buck: you sound serious, i went for worst case scenario
Eddie: i didn’t kill anyone Buck!
Buck: are you sure? cause we can handle this, i’m all in
Eddie: would you let me finish what i was going to say?
Buck: is it better or worse than the possibility that you killed someone?
Eddie: that depends on your response
Buck: oh no, you killed TWO people?
Eddie: I DIDNT KILL ANYONE BUCK! IM IN LOVE WITH YOU!
Buck: oh. damn i really overshot with the whole murder thing huh

Eddie: i’m considering killing you
Buck: does it surprise you if i say that you are not the first person to tell me that?
Eddie: not even a little bit
