Obsessed with Misha Collins

I am piecing together a narrative of what happened to make the finale so nightmarishly bad, based on bits and pieces of information that Misha, Jensen and others involved with Supernatural have let drop recently.

First of all, everyone knew, since the beginning of season fifteen, that Cas and Dean’s relationship was going to be put front and center.

- Jensen saying at SDCC in response to the question “what are you most excited to tackle this season and he says “CAS”. 

- Bobo wrote the confession the first before anything else in season fifteen and Misha knew about that from the beginning of Season fifteen. 

Second, there have been warning signs for at least a year that something was fishy about the ending.

- Jensen but was informed of the ending and didn’t like it. Something about it didn’t sit right with him and he had to be talked around to it by Eric. The writers apparently said he was too close to the character of Dean Winchester. We assumed that (given the stale and inaccurate rep he has of disliking Destiel and being supposedly homophobic) he’d had an issue with Destiel-adjacent elements but was talked into accepting them. I feel pretty horrible about that interpretation now, because see below.

- At Misha’s panel just after E18 aired, he said that Jensen didn’t know specifically about the confession prior to season fifteen, but was informed about three months prior to it being filmed and had no issues with it. So it was definitely not any Destiel-type components of the original ending that Jensen had issues with.

Third, I have info that hasn’t been shared yet. 

I was at the Vegas Con in March and at a M&G, a well-liked and respected member of the cast mentioned that the writers were still frantically writing the last episode - which at that point was going to be filmed in like two weeks. They seemed worried and sort of grimly amused in a resigned way. It was strange and a bit upsetting. I was like Oh, my God, they’re going to fuck it up. That was my first intimation of what we saw on Thursday. From what they said, it sounded like the writers had a draft but kept getting told to make last minute changes to it, to the point that it was starting to get hairy, whether they’d have a script on time to shoot.

What I believe likely happened was that the execs gave Dabb an ending that he had to work his way around to. Like, those guys already knew how they wanted it to end, before season 15 even began and that was the ending that Jensen saw and disliked. I also believe that Dabb, when he was handed this terrible ending, was like “yes of course,” as you do with abusive, narcissistic authority figures… and then you do something else, you write around them and you write what you want to, piece by piece laying it out until there is no other logical conclusion. Writing and coralling the other writers to massage the narrative to a place where Destiel has to happen.

I am all but certain that Dabb - and Berens and Glynn and Perez and all the good writers (basically, all of them but Bucklemming who are the creatures of Singer) - had been intentionally, subversively creating a narrative arc that led directly and inevitably to a finale with rainbow glitter exploding out of cannons emblazoned with DESTIEL in glowing letters. And they would have gotten away with it, too, if it hadn’t been for those meddling executives. 

Here’s another couple pieces of the puzzle:

At the Creation panel on Sunday Nov 15, Jensen said that parts of his reaction in the confession scene had ended up on the cutting room floor. He also said that he had asked a crew member to film his reaction to Castiel’s speech - he must have been suspecting shenanigans, and the following point will explain why. 

A crew member has allegedly leaked that, during filming, Dean was not nonverbal after Castiel got taken by the Empty. There is a rumor - yes, unsubstantiated but people of some stature in fandom assert they believe this person is not lying - that Dean said “me too.” So Jensen probably suspected that the reciprocation was not going to make it past the editing room, and therefore he wanted it recorded.*

It is verified that Jensen did ADR for that scene after filming was concluded for eps 19 and 20. That sobbing sound over the end of the scene appears to have been added in later. To cover “me too,” potentially. 

I think it was after 18 was in the can, with the love confession possibly verbally requited by Dean, that the execs got cold feet. It could have been prior to that as well, given what the cast member said in Vegas. But I believe Dabb & Co. had one ending all ready to go and were told to revise it considerably. They saw E18 and they were like…Oh yeah, that’s way too gay. We’re not doing it. We are going to make you completely rewrite everything.

So Dabb did something that was probably like a much better version of what we got on Thursday-  something where Sam gets his HEA with Eileen and even if Dean dies, he gets to Heaven where everybody was at the roadhouse and something happens between Cas and Dean. Like a much better executed version of what we got, but with no vampmimes and a lot more continuity and heart. 

So the ending they were working on right before Covid shut everything down was Watered Down Version 1. 

And then they couldn’t even execute that because of Covid, so he has to cut a bunch of stuff out, but he leaves in Eileen and Cas. WDV 2. This is why Misha said he was going back. I mean, the third lead and the very well established romantic interest of the second lead - of COURSE they’re going to be in it. 

Something happened to make them water it down even more, I’m not sure what, and Misha evidently didn’t even go back to film. But I bet there was at least some ADR that he did, and I’m betting Eileen was there via voice and extensive mentions. And I am now persuaded that a lot of the severe lameness of the episode was put there intentionally by Dabb to signal to the more clued-in fans that THIS ISN’T RIGHT, THIS ISN’T WHAT WE WANTED. El Sol, vampmimes who tear tongues out, etc. I am cribbing this bit from other writers more insightful and eagle-eyed than I, but it rings true. This is WDV 3. 

And then in post-production, maybe someone points out to Singer all the backhanded messages that Dabb put in, to make him look like an asshole. And then everything related to Cas except two paltry mentions get axed. Misha’s voice - axed. Dean’s reaction, any further lines he might have had, axed. Eileen- axed. Singer and or nameless execs went full Bronly and gave what looks an awful lot like a Wincest-adjacent ending. Because a) they are dinosaurs, b) they are homophobes, c) they’re bitter that Jensen and Misha wanted to pull the plug on their cash cow, and d) they honestly thought that the GA would prefer a “no homo,” “Cas? I don’t know her” ending. They thought they’d make more money that way. 

And ALSO - even if they knew that wasn’t the case - they are such homophobes that they didn’t want to be associated with a historically progressive, pro-queer destiny for a show that started out as cartoonishly “masculine” and dude-bro. 

So they ignored everything- they literally ignored every fucking piece of their mythology and their mytharc and their narrative and their characterizations and their themes. Dabb’s promise of a “found family centric” ep was empty. He didn’t realize that at that time, obviously, and what happened to his vision is tragic. What happened to all of them, and all of us, is tragic. And so vile. 

They are the villains of their own story, the villains Dabb warned us of. Amazing.

There should be so many fucking lawsuits. I want to see each and every one of those contracts. Will you all send them to me?I am an attorney! Please, there needs to be some fucking comeuppance for this. If we can find anything that’s not frivolous, and that shouldn’t be hard. Do you know how many causes of action there are? We could call this fraud in the inducement - I’m guessing Dabb’s contract was violated by what they did.

The hilarious thing to me is that I got into the fandom in late Feb 2019, and within a few months I had this theory of a French-Resistance style effort to make Destiel undeniably canonical. 

I can’t believe I was right. That’s the real story of Supernatural - the epic struggle to make Destiel REAL. I hope that somebody tells that in some format and if they don’t, I will.

So we don’t know for sure about the voice over as ppl have damage controlled on that since but lbr either way Dean was going to reciprocate in 18 or 20. Duh.

People seem confused and keep saying Misha was never supposed to be in the finale as Cas, no no no this is a misunderstanding.

The FIRST script had 5 days of filming as Cas. This is the good place. This is the happy ending with rainbows reciprocation and being remembered forever.

Execs pulled it after they heard about the ILY in production (it was filmed before the break). They called Dabb and said no, this is too gay we won’t have Dean queer. Do something to can Castiel, but use Misha cos we paid him and don’t you dare have any interactions or hints at a queer Dean, so the SECOND script got created by Dabb, with Jimmy and a load of Easter eggs and tongues cut to say this isn’t his story.

And yes Misha was potentially already up quarantining for this cameo when execs stepped in very late again and said nope STILL not no homo enough. This seems to be very close to filming, hence the scramble. They panicked and cut Misha completely. He’s a liability. So Dabb mad Misha are completely cut and Singer / Eugénie butcher the ending. This is the THIRD script. They manage to turn Dean’s Heaven into Dean’s Hell.

So I’ll say it again: it is okay if you come to tumblr to escape upsetting news. It is okay if you’re just here for fun and fandom. It is okay if you do not want to use your tumblr as a place to read about or spread the current events that are circulating. It is okay if you need a place to decompress and just relax. There are other ways to be involved in/support causes and you are allowed to set boundaries on social media platforms without it being indicative of your belief systems.

I’ve heard people talk about jumping ship here and I get it. The end of porn is a significant change. Some are making plans to go to alternate sites (like BDSMlr) to meet these desires that are being removed from this platform.

But while there are those people talking about the loss of porn, there’s a bigger loss happening. This used to be a place where people felt they could express themselves freely. Porn, yes, but also puppies (never at the same time). It was a place you could go to write a poem or post a painting or write an essay or sit and watch others do that and use their posts to express yourself. It was a place where all the parts of your life could be represented or not, at your discretion. The picture you took of flowers that were prettily blooming in the spring, a small write-up of a particularly nasty masturbation session, a funny story about how you learned a recipe, a video of someone falling down and laughing, a pretty picture of a tea set, and a selfie of your boobs because they felt pretty that day, too. It was a place where you could be as anonymous or as public as you wanted, you could show your whole personality or any aspect of it you wanted.

That’s the saddest thing. There may be other places with porn, but where can we go to express ourselves and all the things that make up our lives? This place could have been the internet at it’s best: living up to the potential of connecting people through access to truly free communication. The powers that be have increasingly decided that this should be a more mainstream site and more accessible, increasingly restricting our freedoms to build our communities as we see fit. 

This blog and the blog site might survive the changeover to Facebook V2. Or it might lose luster when people realize it is now just another social media outlet and collapse. Time will tell.
