Ralph Detroit: Become Human Analysis
Hello guys I’m back with another post and this time its for a character that seems to just keep on getting popular as the days go by and that character is known as Ralph. Although Ralph isn’t my favorite I still really appreciate his character and felt the need to write something for him.
Ralph at first glance comes off as very hostile and paranoid, he is visibly disturbed by intruders even going as far as to kill a homeless man seeking shelter, this can somewhat be justified seeing as in the past Ralph had been brutally beaten up by a bunch of delinquents who tortured him for fun before managing to flee. At first he doesn’t welcome Kara and Alice (if the player decides to go to the abandoned house) in fact the first scene we see of Ralph is him pointing his knife at Alice, Kara comes to Alice’s aid and depending on the players choice can either stay or leave to find somewhere else to sleep, if the player decides to stay Ralph’s mood become elevated and he happily welcomes Kara and Alice into his “house” (if you could call it that but who am I to judge).
From what I can deduct from that scene it seems that Ralph has server mood swings, another thing to note is that Ralph always refers to himself in third person and can be seen to twitch very often this is most definitely from the torture he went through.
Ralph like North has a huge disdain toward human beings, according to the game
“He has a merciless hatred for humans and the trauma they inflicted on him” this kinda reminds me a little of North now doesn’t it.
Later in the game if the player decided to surrender during the attack on Jericho they can meet Ralph in the camp, during this scene when Ralph is panicking there are three options available for the player to pick from (I think they were leave, insists and calm) if the player were to choose insist, Ralph openly admits to killing just more than one human he also proceeds to generalize and says that he knew all humans are bad (in a similar way with North), this is however somewhat justifiable seeing as most humans (with the exception of a few) were either degrading their androids or androids as a whole or either physically or mentally abusing them.
Ralph never seems to part from his knife and takes it everywhere he goes, I think he believes that no matter what humans and or androids might try and hurt him so he chooses to have a weapon close by if he feels like he is being threatened or in danger. The only time we see Ralph put down his weapon is when Kara chooses the option “family” she tells Ralph that “a father would never threaten his little girl with a knife to make her eat”.
What makes Ralph an interesting character is the fact that he wants or desires to be part of a family, during the dinner scene at the abandoned house Ralph spends his time looking for food for Alice to eat,
Ralph in short likes to play house (already referring to Kara as the mother, him as the father and Alice as their child) he becomes giddy when Alice and Kara decide to stay and eat but when Alice is hesitant to eat the “meal"he "cooked” he looses his temper and slams his fist against the table telling her forcefully that she should eat.
Although Ralph certainly has he’s flaws there is a part of him that I would always respect and that his how willing he is to sacrifice himself to save Alice if the player surrendered and is at the camp, I really admire that aspect of his character he is selfless when it comes to saving someone who he cares for and thinks of as family.
It would really be interesting to see how Ralph would be after the revolution, would his fear and hatred for humans ever subside? I’m really curious.
Ralph definitely is an interesting character and I would have liked to see more of him in the game, these are just my thoughts and opinions on this character.
