He never told me he loved me. He never told me he loved me, but he paid attention. He seemed to hold onto my every word as if my afternoons were Aristotle and my coffee order were Keats. He never told me he loved me, but he was vulnerable. I could read the lines on his skin. Tragedies on his heart, and comedies in his eyes. He never told me he loved me, but his touch created an independent consciousness. A macrocosm consisting only of his arms around my waist, foreheads pressed together. But he never told me he loved me. And I wonder if I was nothing but the last page of the Sunday paper : the ophelia of my own tragedy, a victim of my own fantasies. He never told me he loved me, but I loved him. He was my drug; I didn’t know when to stop. I didn’t know when enough was enough. I craved his attention and the feelings he set off inside of me, and even when I knew he wasn’t just mine, it didn’t stop me. That’s what really broke me. I overdosed on him. My drug.

It’s your flaws I want to taste. Your crooked mouth. The way you smell after being out all day. Your knees, so eager to bend to whatever song is playing in your head. Your chest, as it rises and falls and rises and falls on the carpeted ground. Your sometimes smooth chin. Your pimpled politeness. Your tangled hair. Your good morning, every morning. I don’t want to be able to run my fingers through you easily. It is no fun writing about perfections. I want to talk about you. Flawed. Crooked. Endlessly interesting. You.
