“A Quarantine Sunrise” Dr. Jake Turner, Ithaca, New York, USA The Q Gallery’s “complex” Special Collection Dr. Jake Turner is a postdoctoral researcher in Astronomy at Cornell.  Besides being a scientist, Jake is a photographer, dancer,  traveler, environmental justice activist, and Spiritual Humanism Peace Counselor. He is originally from a small rural town in southern Colorado but for the past 12 years he has lived in Arizona, Virginia, France, and New York.  Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis he has been actively involved in the Mutual Aid Tompkins group that has helped to make sure those most vulnerable and affected by the pandemic get the help they need. “Juliana & Jack” & “Lido Pimienta” (Colombian Musician) Yen Ospina, Ithaca, New York, USA

Yen Ospina is a Colombian-American self-taught artist and illustrator depicting her own interpretation of folk and art nouveau. Through earth tone colors, ornamental layouts, and meticulous detail, the work challenges viewers to delve beyond aesthetic allure and allow mysticism to guide their interpretation.  Yen Ospina’s work is influenced by years of exposing herself to antique art (such as Gustav Klimt & Alphonse Mucha), furniture, and literature.   In addition to creating gallery pieces, Yen is a local muralist and has done live art painting with musicians such as Mosaic Foundation & Big Mean Sound Machine.

Ithaca Times Media Spotlight

'Solidago Series' 2020 (Land Art Installations using Goldenrod Stalks) Ned Carlson, Ithaca, New York, USA Ithaca, NY’s The Q Gallery’s “complex” Special Collection Ned Carlson's main artistic focus is on Land and Environmental Art. He utilizes found natural materials to create site specific installations. These installations are documented through carefully composed video and photography, and are exceedingly ephemeral, often destroyed by the wind or water directly following completion. Ned's pieces not only play with concepts of light, dark, and color; they also address pressing environmental issues such as climate change, environmental degradation, and invasive species.  Using materials that are often overlooked such as eroded stone, fungus infected maple leaves, or invasive reeds, Ned highlights the reality of issues that are not always concretely recognized in local and regional ecosystems. He also likes to work in liminal ecotones that are so prevalent in an over-cultivated and increasingly sprawling society. With his art, he aims to tackle large issues and push viewers to actually look at the world around them, and to find the exceptional in the mundane. In the time of COVID-19, this work is more relevant than ever, as we need to cherish and recognize that which we take for granted, especially people and the natural world around us.

“Spring 2020, Garden in the Time of COVID-19, Painting During the Pandemic, Trapped” Christine Sloan Stoddard

Christine Sloan Stoddard is a Salvadoran-American author, artist, and film/theatre professional based in Brooklyn. Her books include Naomi & The Reckoning, Desert Fox by the Sea, Belladonna Magic, Water for the Cactus Woman, and other titles. She is a Visible Poetry Project filmmaker, Table Work Press award-winning playwright, and founder of Quail Bell Magazine. Previously, she was the first-ever artist-in-residence at Lenox Hill Neighborhood House in Manhattan and Brooklyn Public Library's Eastern Parkway Branch in Crown Heights. Currently, Christine is the artist-in-residence at HeartShare Human Services of New York and curates public programs for the Art Deco Society of New York. She studied at Grinnell College and holds undergraduate degrees from VCUarts. In 2019, she earned her MFA in Digital & Interdisciplinary Art Practice at The City College of New York-CUNY.

“Don't worry, Teddy” Aleksei Sergeevich Latinnik (Alatinni), Minsk, Belarus

Aleksei Latinnik (Alatinni), is a self-taught contemporary artist from Minsk, Belarus, a participant of numerous national and international art exhibitions.  "Don't worry, Teddy" is about current world COVID-19 pandemic. The little girl is holding a teddy bear. The girl and the bear wear medical masks. Why? This question is addressed mainly to you. What does this picture tell you?  Somebody will say that the girl is playing a doctor with a her favorite toy. It's how the kid reacts on COVID-19 pandemic and harsh reality through the game where she is a super doctor who can make wonder and cure anybody event her sick Teddy. Don't worry, Teddy, you're in good hands!  Somebody will pay an attention to the missing face details. A common image of girl is used as a symbolic representation of medical personnel and doctors who every day fight for our lives and health.  Some people may discover their personal feelings related to isolation.  Somebody may notice an idea that COVID pandemic is merciless, has no regrets and affects everyone. Maybe Teddy bear is the only one who has left for a little girl...  You may wonder, what was thoughts of the artist while painting?  It's all about this mentioned cases at the same time, but it's more important what you feel here. Anyway a girl and her Teddy are safe, masks symbolize it well. So, the message to you, who watch on the paining: "Stay safe, stay positive and help others!"

“The Guides” Torie Tiffany, Ithaca, New York, USA

This piece brings a remembering that we are not alone.

I also write a vignette for each of my works: The Guides Along my journey,  I’ve come to know those who have loved me since long ago. When I can listen, they each impart a soft reminder: we are your heart.

The creative process is like breath - essential, spontaneous, and fulfilling.   With each collage I form, and every vignette I write, a new part of me comes to life with a joy I hope to share in the completed piece.  My art is inspired by the elements, inhabitants, and connective energy of our amazing universe.  I design by blending these aspects in a  synthesis of photography and digital painting and also write a few lines of creative reflection for each piece. The selections in my studio are presented in giclee on canvas and are also available on metal, wood, acrylic, and paper as well as items such as t-shirts, tote bags, blankets, and mugs.  The works are grouped into several individual series ranging from sublime to comical, representing my ever meandering mind.    Welcome to my imagination!
