In honor of a powerful resurgence of interest around the energy of the Great Goddess, Go! Push Pops hosted a sacred reading circle in Prospect Park August 2016 with esteemed guest Nancy Azara and Kay Turner, two of the pioneers of the 1970âs Feminist Art movement in NYC both featured in the Heresies Journal âGreat Goddessâ issue. RSVPâs to the event received a .pdf copy of HERESIES #5 âGreat Goddessâ issue packed with articles such as Merlin Stoneâs The Three Faces of Goddess Spirituality, Carol P. Christâs Why Women Need the Goddess, Toni Headâs Changing the Hymns to Hers, Kay Turnerâs Contemporary Feminist Rituals, Lucy Lippardâs Stonesprings, Mimi Lobellâs Temples of the Great Goddess, poetry by Sappho, and artwork by Nancy Azara, Louise Bourgeois and more. Following the discussion Ayurvedic Mama led a foraging walk through the park.
HERESIES: A Feminist Publication on Art and Politics was first published in January 1977, and covered topics such as feminist theory, art, politics, patterns of communication, lesbian art and artists, women's traditional arts and politics of aesthetics, women and violence, working women together, women from peripheral nations, women and music, sex, film, activism, racism, and coming of age. There were hundreds of collective members including accomplished artists, writers, architects, painters, filmmakers, designers, editors, curators and teachers. Notable members of the mother collective included Lucy Lippard, Miriam Schapiro, Mary Miss, Joyce Kozloff, Mary Beth Edelson, Pat Steir, Elke Solomon, Joan Snyder, and Harmony Hammond.
