2016: the year of awareness.
What I’ve noticed a lot with creatives is the enormous amount of support we get, but also the obscene amount of criticism we receive on a daily basis. Why don’t more people talk about this? Most of us are too prideful to admit that we are on the receiving end of negativity - it’s more common to boast about the support, positivity, and success. Truthfully, no one wants to fuel the attack or give the assholes more shine. The reality of this is - the universe seeks balance. Where there is love, there is unfortunate hate as well.
For the most part, creatives crave growth and ways to find new depths in their work and within themselves. It’s like a bottomless pit that never fills. Whether it’s an actor, musician, painter, writer, model, director, origami maker, photographer, crafts-men, make-up artist, glass molder etc. it is normally the same undeniable feeling we all experience in our lifespan.
The artists that put their work out there are making a conscious decision to open themselves to the vulnerability by sharing the deepest parts of our minds and passions with the public - you. No matter how much a person may not ‘care’ doesn’t make them less susceptible to an outsiders judgments.
The irony about all of this is… there is a certain level of expectation that is created here. You want to see an artist grow, you do, and if they don’t display this, then the creative is considered to be ‘washed up’ or now exhibits zero originality (in your mind, of course). Then again, when the creative tries something that varies from their previous work they at times are ridiculed because it is not what YOU are comfortable with. This is not what you are use to from them, you feel fooled.
If someone isn’t what others want them to be, then others seem to become angry. It’s almost as if they feel like they ‘know’ what is best for the creative. These people can hardly lead their own life, yet they feel they can curate and see these visions through with a better ability. Bottom line - the artist is damned if they change - and damned if they don’t.
Open your mind, let people create and pour their heart, soul, and vision into the world. We are happy to share and receive this creative energy with one another. If the art made you feel something whether it be positive or negative than the artist did their part - and successfully. Let’s inspire, be inspired, and just sit back and enjoy the show.
