I had an idea that Adar goes non-verbal and may need alone time when he’s overwhelmed which can clash with Celebrimbor’s constant need for reassurance that everything is truly, really ok between them (and the need only grew worse after the whole Sauron debacle) and they eventually stumble into the solution that if Celebrimbor feels Adar pulling away one of his first questions will be yes/no versions of “do you need quiet time?” “Can I share quiet time with you or do you need to be alone?” “Is there something we need to discuss later?” “Can you show me we’re ok?” And that last one can lead to anything Adar has the energy for. It can be a simple written or signed word/sentence, a shoulder bump, a forehead kiss, a hand squeeze, or even a hug.
Adar appreciates Narvi even more when the dwarf does the assuring for him. Narvi loves Celebrimbor but he knows their elf’s need for reassurance can be exhausting especially if one is already at one’s limits. Besides it usually means Narvi gets alone time with Celebrimbor. 😘
And of course the pair teach each other and Celebrimbor Uruk and dwarf sign language and soon everyone in Eregion can sign a little in each language.
Celebrimbor probably finds quiet time easier to understand when Narvi explains it as thinking time. Eventually it becomes a normal sight in Eregion to see Celebrimbor silently hard at work on some project while Narvi helps and Adar is somewhat distant from them maybe just sitting or drinking his tea or maybe working on something of his own or simply watching the pair mime and sign and scribble away and fail to stifle their giggles and Celebrimbor’s happy chirps and other noises he makes while working/thinking. and everyone knows not to break the silence unless given permission
Adar: Yes, this is my circus, those are my monkeys, and yes I deliberately gave them those flamethrowers.
AMERICANS!!! DO NOT DO THIS TO FLOCK 'SECURITY' CAMERAS. REPOST AND SPREAD THE WORD
do not get IR blocking fabric or thick wool to cover your nose and mouth
do not get IR blocking sunglasses since facial recognition has moved up to targeting and identifying the upper face
do not avoid having your phone or any bluetooth devices around these cameras as they can detect and track those signals
do not buy cheap green lasers 1 milliwatt or above from etsy or walmart or amazon (i will not try and find a link if you ask)
do not use them to fry those fuckers from a distance damage the delicate inner sensors by pointing the beam in the lenses
AND unless you want to cost Flock more money in repairs, do not buy a small circle saw or a reciprocating saw and cut down the pole
OR do not climb said poles, spray paint on the solar panels, cover the lens with paint or a sticker, then use bolt cutters to sever the wires
when doing all these things, DO NOT avoid using latex gloves as fingerprints can leak through
DO NOT USE DEFLOCK TO FIND FLOCK SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS NEAR YOU
remember, flock is for YOUR safety :) even though crime rates have not gone down since they were implemented, they're being abused to track down exes and s/os, and many face pools or houses or schools or gymnasiums! Where there are no liscence plates to be found!
DO NOT DO THESE THINGS and enjoy a life under surveillance!
enjoy living in the country where 87,000 of these cameras were used to track down a woman who got an abortion!
enjoy living in the country where there's no consequences for a flock exec to watch a inside of a gymnastics place without their knowledge!
Remember, this is their American Dream.
EDIT: 53 cities have cancelled contracts with flock and are now turning to Axon, in which 🎺 invested 1-5 million dollars earlier this year. Do not limit your focus to one brand.
this lab safety training module is sending me

This made me think of you for some reason @eowyn7023

I've made multiple posts about this before: that LOTR is less a story about hope and more a story about trudging on despite utter hopelessness, that it's about faith, but not even faith that could be mistaken for hope, faith that you will succeed or that things will turn out all right or that in the end some higher power will save you, only faith that it is worthwhile to keep going even if you know you're going nowhere. It is good to act correctly in the absence of hope.
But as I'm rereading Return, it turns out I *still* underestimated how often characters state their hopelessness outright. It's on every second page. Hope is gone and hope has been gone for a long time and the hopelessness only deepens with every new day.
And sure, this is Tolkien so providence does exist and things do turn out all right and all hopes are fulfilled and happy endings abound, mostly, but I still love the intensity with which he portrays losing hope and going the fuck on.
And I'm not just talking about Frodo and Sam on their desperate quest. When Pippin is facing the charging enemy at the Black Gate, he thinks "I wish Merry was here. Now at any rate I understand poor Denethor a little better. We might die together, Merry and I, and since die we must, why not? Well, as he is not here, I hope he will find an easier end." A young man is staring down death and thinking, this sucks so very much I understand why a man tried to kill himself and his own son, family annihilation now seems a reasonable and proportionate response to our situation. It's an incredibly dark moment, coming from a character who's mostly been lighthearted so far.
So I i resolved a big financial pressure that was causing a TON of stress today which is great! BUT now my brain’s turned off and is in lalala land and the workday is only halfway over and I have things I NEED to do. I’ve procrastinated as long as I could. I need to at least START this project today
And I’m begging my brain: come on. Just look at this word doc. Can we do that?
And my brains like no, I want to go look for cats. Why can’t we play that computer game where we find hidden cats in funny locations? 🙃
I posted a new episode for my queer fantasy noir podcast Say I Slew Them Not. In this episode Kingsley has a minor mental breakdown before attending negotiations with the manipulative Sebastian Wallace, who totally wants the best for Kingsley and his people. ;)

truly one of the most demoralising things about being in the job market atm is "only successful applicants will be notified" is practically a universal standard. so you spend hours, sometimes days filling out applications, writing CVs and cover letters only to be ghosted as the only form of communication. Not even a "thank you but this time you've been unsuccessful" email. You're in a constant state of "did I not get it or have they not contacted me?" and you just have to eventually conclude you were unsuccessful without so much as courtesy, "sorry, but thank you for your application." A literal thankless cycle for months and months and months. You'd think with all the ways to automate these processes they would at least have the time, means and decency to acknowledge your submission and let you off the hook, but no. You're just in limbo in every possible way in the name of "efficiency". Solidarity with everyone going through this because it is truly dehumanising and demoralising to work so hard on putting yourself forward constantly without acknowledgement or useful communication of any sort for long periods of time, and most ppl simply will not have any compassion for what that's like.
magneto being a jewish holocaust survivor is integral to his story btw. i just saw a bunch of people on the internet talking about how it doesn't make sense anymore because he'd be like a hundred years old but you know what else doesn't make sense... a man with retractable claws coated in metal. or a woman that is blue and can shapeshift. or superheroes as a whole.

ALWAYS get everything in writing
Also? If it is a contracted position, write down that you are not quitting but are concerned at the change in contract terms. If they wish to renegotiate your contract, you would be delighted to do so.
there are a NUMBER of folktale Woman-Creatures like selkies who exist to make the inherently coercive nature of heterosexual marriage explicit and to externalize male anxiety about how if your wife had actual autonomy she very well might disappear and you might never fucking hear from her again
which is a FASCINATING category of Woman-Creature imo
someone said it's also a cautionary tale about mistreating your wife and I think that's spot on especially for other related types of stories e.g. the crane wife. like I think these stories are very much Husband Anxiety Stories. the Woman-Creatures are black boxes whose interior experience it is impossible to know and who have strange and often seemingly arbitrary rules that you must follow or else they will disappear. idk. like. that's why I think that any empowering-to-women-ness qualities of these stories is incidental. I think they're externalized anxiety about coercive societal heterosexuality and the inability to truly Know one's wife in such circumstances.
you also see a variant of this formula a lot (generally at the more literary end of the fairy tale space) where it's not a creature you capture, but a magical lady who picks you for seemingly arbitrary reasons, bettering your fortune enormously with her magic and wealth and second-hand status.
and then, for reasons usually at least slightly less arbitrary, fucks off again.
the husbandly anxiety here is more about not having access to coercion as an option.
oooo yes absolutely!
was just talking to Story about this and he told me about one folktale where a guy meets a beautiful woman at a lake and she brings a bountiful dowry of like one million fat cows and such and she is of course a fairy so she's like "my one requirement in our bargain is that if you strike me three times I will leave" and in many versions of the story the husband doesn't ""actually"" strike her -- each time it's something like, one 'strike' involves her forgetting her gloves inside and he walks out and taps her on the shoulder with her gloves, but she tells him that counts as striking her. this sort of thing. which is TRANSPARENTLY like "whoa wouldn't it be fucked up if your wife could enforce consequences for behavior she said was harmful, even if according to your cultural norms it was fine, and you didn't see it as a big deal?" like... lol. what if women could actually be the ones who decided whether or not any given action their husbands took against them was harmful? IMAGINE... PREDEY SCARY....
