He does mean well! He's just terrible at this! His conviction that there is A Trick to getting promoted would serve him well in another precinct if he was capable of being subtle with it.
But he isn't. (capable of being subtle. Or in another precinct.)
He could be a good cop. He is fairly competent as a base which is a good start, and he is already deeply devoted to duty and his fellow officers. But he has to figure out how to take people at face value and when to do so, which is hard and takes time. It would also be good for him to investigate why he wants to be a detective so badly but y'know that's probably more of a therapy thing than an 80s macho man thing so that's not going to happen for a while, if ever.
I don’t watch a lot of cop shows, but I feel like Barney Miller might be the exception to this. Mostly because there is no evidence, and little investigation. It’s a sitcom, not a procedural, which makes a difference.

Ron Glass - (Barney Miller, Firefly) - the man aged like a fine wine! he was hot in the 70s and he was hot in the 00s!
Scott Bakula - (Quantum Leap, Star Trek: Enterprise (Seasons 1-3)) - Idk how to even explain how hot Scott Bakula is as Dr. Sam Beckett in Quantum Leap. Sam is the ultimate hot nerd - a genius with six doctorates, who invents a way to time travel, he's selfless and pure of heart, and will unhesitatingly punch bigots in the face when necessary. He also does a lot of singing and dancing (Bakula is a Tony nominated musical theatre actor) and takes off his shirt A LOT. He kind of looks like just some guy in still photos, but watch him in an episode, and trust me, you'll understand.

look. the broad spectrum of issues covered in quantum leap with a SHOCKING amount of sincerity and good balance of comedy with serious topics should be able to speak for itself here. to me its a very Classic scifi/speculative fiction model of reflection on social issues - episodes where sam is put through minority group experiences or put in social positions of difficulty (in particular, the episode in which hes in the body of a teen girl thats been raped by a local Golden Boy always comes to mind. for ostensibly a comedy show, they took big serious swings and that helps it hold up still.) and yes he absolutely rocked the dresses they tailored for him. guy that is hot bc hes not afraid to get serious Or sillay. one fun fact i have about him is that his contract for enterprise specified that they had to be done filming every day by a certain time so that he could go have dinner at home, he made the studio give him time to spend with his family bc when they filmed quantum leap he would be away months at a time. also hes a triple threat he has stage experience too <3

Barney Miller was a very important role in every way, and Hal Linden nailed it- he's a police captain who leads with compassion and kindness and leads a very diverse squad. Brooklyn 99 learned everything from Barney Miller.

i must disagree (humbly and respectfully) on dietrich being barbie. he’s more allen…there’s only one of him! lol.
canonically though, dietrich is very barbie with his million and one careers though! (harris tries his best. harris is my favorite along with dietrich - so needed to shoehorn him in.)
It is very true that there will never be another Dietrich. If someone said he spawned out of a tree overtaken by moss when someone left an encyclopedia out in the rain I would believe them.
Harris is the most Barbie-Wardrobe coded. Dietrich got her careers. Together they make The 12th Precincts Barbie like some kind of squabbling voltron.
