Sharks are particularly vulnerable to fishing because they reproduce slowly. 🦈 They: • Grow slowly and reach a very late maturity – for example the Greenland Shark can live ~400 years and reach sexual maturity at ~150 years! Many are killed before they’ve produced offspring. We are pleased to join over 200 local and international stakeholders in supporting to uphold the existing shark fishing ban in the Maldives. Sharks are fundamental key predators keeping the marine environment healthy. Sharks are example of natural perfection; they have existed for more than 450 million years, whereas the earliest tree, lived around 350 million years ago. Not only sharks are older than trees, but they are also one of the only animals to have survived four of the five mass extinctions – now, THIS IS IMPRESSIVE, considering also that humans existed for just 2 million years, and that we are currently destroying the Planet. What a stunning colors, don’t you think? 🌈 ➖ Tridacnia or clams are bivalve mollusks with a secret. They do filter the seawater for catching plankton, but they also farm their own algae. The stunning colors are due to the unicellular algae mixed in their flesh. As clams expose the algae to the sun, the alge gives in return nutrients created from the photosintetic activity. What if…. we were able to do the same? Taxi-Shark 🦈 ➖ This is when a predator has become a means of transportation. Here, the Remora (or Suckerfish, genus: Echeneis) is attached to the belly of a shark. They have found the way to be transported effortless, to be protected (I mean, that’s a shark) and to eventually eat (well, food scraps, parasites or skin from their host). How does it work? That’s why we are starting a collaboration with @baokalo, a community by the local residents of Velidhoo Island, in the Maldives 🇲🇻, who have recently started a long-term project for the restoration of their reef. Turtles who plastics can immediately die of suffocation, but sometimes plastic bags fill their stomach causing a long death for starvation.
