You guys ever hear about Steven Universe? Pretty darn good as it turns out

I finished the series for the first time (when it was airing, I fell off the wagon early in season 4) and also watched Future for the first time and now I am mega, mega bummed out. The ending of the series itself was like kind of beautiful but mostly sad to me and then all of Future was just so sad and dark. I guess it’s not uncommon for a series to be basically as good as it ever gets in the first season and then go progressively downhill but that first season is just so special and magical, Steven is such a beautiful character, and then to have this whole epilogue of basically unresolved whump…I felt like I was being punished for being invested in this poor kid haha

nooo exactly, like the original series was messy but also seemed to be like that in a way that felt purposeful , this a show about relationships and messy people and metaphors and feelings and love, FUTURE then takes it, tries to recontextualize everything in a way that’s much more literal, presents us with a very big and serious problem in the form of unresolved childhood trauma and then tries to tell u the best way for steven to do deal with it is to leave everyone who’s ever loved and supported him behind indefinitely as an 18 yr old… no road map, no college plan, no friends… like, I understand the purpose behind future in regards to the fan criticism the show got regarding everything he had to deal with but like… what am I supposed to do with that… ?

Yeah I feel like…Like. You have to either go all in on the metaphor (he’s the manifestation of his mothers love for the world, he’s supernaturally strong and capable and loving, his powers are for helping others and for loving life) or on the realism (he was a child soldier who has ptsd and now blames the adults in his life for parentifying him and failing to protect him from their own dysfunctions). Or if not choosing one angle you have to be really intentional and artful in marrying them, which I think the original SU was at its best. You can’t really have both?! he can’t be both debilitatingly mentally ill and also cool to just group hug and then peace out to find himself?!
