reality is that randy got more school shooter assumptions from his peers than benson did for the simple fact that he was in high school post-columbine and benson wasn't. and yeah he pretended he didn't hear it and pretended it didn't get to him when he did and yeah it kept him awake some nights thinking shit like "we don't have a gun in the house right. there's no way for this to even happen right" and double and triple-checking all the pockets of his backpack to make sure he didn't put a gun in there and forgot. meanwhile benson brought his granddaddy's revolver to school with one bullet in the chamber and got suspended for a couple days after daring his classmates to play russian roulette, for being a nuisance more than anything while his peers bought and sold shotguns out their pickups in the parking lot after school and no one batted an eye.

and while everyone figured he was going nowhere fast, they figured he'd kill himself before he killed anyone else, or would just keep puttering on like most everyone who doesn't leave town does. some of his old classmates would come to say they saw it all coming in hindsight, but they didn't, really. most of them didn't even remember his name or what he looked like until he made the local news. meanwhile randy's old classmates from just a couple years prior are torn on wondering how a guy like him got tangled up in something as crazy as a quadruple-homicide hostage situation, and thinking he was obviously an accomplice, what with chris getting two rounds put in him and all. and randy gets to be torn about it, too — gets to wonder if he really got wrapped up in something against his will, just a horrible case of wrong place and wrong time, or if he really did help put a bullet in all of them, directly or indirectly — for the rest of his life.

People are saying that Emily Wilson went too far in her criticism of N0lan's Odyssey but if it had been me in her shoes, and that man had adapted my favorite text into a story about how Sometimes War Atrocities Make The Perpetrators Feel Bad, and turned my favorite character into some generic straight white dude while the women in the story are tortured to make him Feel Feelings, and that man then cited *my* translation as inspiration, I would be on the news.
