Crimson Peak Headcanon:

Once Edith left Allerdale Hall with Alan McMichael, she never returned.  She went back to Buffalo and arranged that the house and everything in it be sold, with the proceeds to go to several charities.  She wanted nothing to do with the house, or the money resulting from the sale, feeling it would be tainted by its attachment to Lucille and Thomas’ murderous crimes. 

The only thing Edith asked to be sent to her from Allerdale Hall was the automaton that Thomas showed her the first time she visited his attic workshop.  It was something he’d made himself and he’d shown it to her with such pride.  She remembered that as the first moment Thomas had looked at her with a new type of light shining in his eyes.  It was one of the few truly happy memories she clung to from her marriage to Thomas.  Despite everything, a part of her loved him still.

Several weeks later, a package arrived from England, with not one but TWO automatons inside it.  One was the automaton Thomas had shown her that day in the workshop.  The other was unfinished and didn’t work as well as the other did because of it.  But Edith cherished it even more than the first when she found inscribed on the automaton’s base

Unbeknownst to her, Thomas had begun building the second automaton in secret right after Edith visited him in his workshop that first time.  He hid it anytime Lucille or Edith walked into the room.
