Cabin fever is generally a term applied to the negative feeling of being cooped in the same place for too long. However, come autumn, cabin fever can be seen in a whole new light. It isn’t the need to get out, but the need to get in. What better way to appreciate the crisp air and the amber leaves then from the vantage point of cozy rustic cabin in the woods? Yes, when the early days of fall approach, cabin fever sets in. You need to be a cabin, by a fire place, drinking pumpkin flavored beverages to truly experience the season. I know naming a mix after one of the sure-fire songs of the summer is a bit on the nose but what better way is there to describe the summertime than “Good Times”? My mix comes a little late this year but with the 4th on the horizon, summer is literally just heating up. It’s not too late to have yourself an unforgettable summer! There’s tons of suns left to set, a whole bunch of dances to dance, some lakes to rope swing into, docks to sun on, boats to sail, skies full of fireworks to explode, grills filled with burgers to char, gobs of suntan lotion to apply, roads to be tripped on, bottles of rose to get your drink on, baseball games to catch, weddings to attend, and just a whole mess of summer left to have. It’s almost daunting isn’t it? No? Exciting? Yes. What I’m trying to get at it that I want you to have a classic beer commercial summer. You’ve seen these adds hundreds of times on TV; beautiful young people drinking beer after beer and having an almost unfathomable amount of fun. Why not make your summer as good as the one those commercial actors are having? You don’t have to constantly be downing light domestic sudds to achieve this, but you can live in the spirit of all that very enticing propaganda. Those thirty second blasts of summer bliss don’t have to be chalked up to hyperbole, they can be real. Those good times can be yours. You can have a beer commercial summer if you want to but first you have to turn off the TV and turn up some Good Times. Cheers, bro.

Of all the many trendy and talked about topics discussed on and offline this year the one that I was most fascinated with was poptimism.  Not really a movement or description an actual genre of music but more of a description of the current cultural tastemaker's approach to music. In one of most recent unpackings of poptimism the New York said: “poptimism wants to be in touch with the taste of average music fans, to speak to the rush that comes from hearing a great single on the radio, or YouTube, and to value it no differently from a song with more “serious” artistic intent.” Basically they are saying that poptimism give any type of music the chance to be considered great with a capital ‘G’. Some people think this is a negative trend in criticism, a continued deterioration of our rapidly waning standards as a culture. I tend to disagree with that take. I grew up in the stuffy music fan temperament of "it sucks first, reappreciate later". Why not give it a chance at first spin? Maybe I was so fascinated with this discussion because without realizing it, I myself have become a poptimist. I turned 30 this year and while it hasn’t slowed down my thirst for new music I found myself less concerned with what the Pitchfork/Stereogum/etc. blogosphere was crushing on, and much like when I was a youngster, caring about whose crushing the charts. However, the big difference between how I approached pop music when I was 11 and now is that I’m looking at it through a well cultivated music snob lense that was finely tuned over the past decade of indie rock gentrification. I can now discuss Taylor Swift with the same analytical passion I would have reserved for the new Animal Collective album. Not that I don’t care about “indie music” anymore, you’ll see that “type of music" well reflected in my year-end lists, I just don’t really distinguish genres anymore. If it’s good, it’s good with a capital ‘G’. I am just as fascinated with beefs between The War On Drugs and Sun Kil Moon then I am between Iggy and Azelia. Seriously, it’s all Good. The lines between pop music, indie music, country, folk, hip-hop, and electronic music have never been so blurry. I was worried that this would make things much more difficult when gauging what I thought was the best albums and songs of the year. But my list making was simpler then ever. I just asked myself simply, what did I like better? I’ve seen so many music trends come and go in my 4 decades (gulp) of music fandom and I don’t think poptimism is one of them. In reality, poptimism isn’t anything. It’s not a movement or a clarification of someone’s tastes, it’s a buzzword that got some decent traction this year. That doesn’t mean it’s sentiment can’t be true. As a whole year of new music approaches us, what’s wrong with being hopeful about what’s to come? If you haven’t yet, I think 2015 is the year to get poptimistic.

Howdy! Dust off your favorite flannel and strap on dem’ der’ boots cause it’s falltime ya’ll! My brand-spankin’-new mix is filled to the brim with some rip-roarin’, down-home, backporch-drinkin’ country music. Now don’t get your knickers in a twist, this is not your lil sister’s country mix, this is for full red-blooded fall music. This is country music from the roots of an old oak tree getting drunk off the ground water of folk, bluegrass, americana and rock and roll music. When I’m talking ‘bout “Big Country” I’m not just talkin’ bout the musical genre, I’m talkin’ bout the whole darn world outside. Autumn is for getting out there and grabbing some great open space by the horns then ridin’ it til the cows come home. I always hear a lot of chatter at the end any given year regarding how this was a particularly good slash bad year for music slash film slash TV slash whatever-floats-your-boat and I’d kindly like to disagree with that chatter’s opinion. In today’s day and age, where there is such a huge out-pouring of content dovetailing with too many ways to experience said content, there has to be less demand on the creators and more expectations on the experiencers. This is why I make these lists, not only to share my tastes with friends but also to take myself to task. Yes, with more music comes more bad music, but by all means, that doesn’t mean you have to listen to the bad stuff. If you don’t like what’s on the radio, find a better station! Why not be optimistic? (Is the radio half filled up with bad music or is it half empty of good music?) Was 2013 a great year for music? Of course! Every year can be a great year for music when you actively find music that you actually enjoy. If your argument is that it’s hard work to discover new music, than try writing a great song. I’m willing to beat you can discover a few artists you’re into sooner than you can crack out a standout refrain. Don’t be discouraged, be empowered that you decide what music defines your year. It’s up to you have a good year for music. Think about this way, every year I make these lists and I lament over what makes the cut, what is better than what, who is better than whom, what is more significant than what, and it’s never easy because there’s always tons of music left out and many songs ranked far too low. It never ceases to amaze me that this time next year, they’ll be a whole new collection of music, that I enjoyed just a much as the music of this year, that moved me just as much, that challenged me just a much, and that I turned up just as loud. It’s exciting to know, without a doubt, they’ll be a whole new list of songs I’ve yet to hear. Isn’t 2014 a great year for music?

WILD FOR THE NIGHT

And so the story goes… it was October 31st 2013 at the end of a dreadfully long school day and Little Billy from the neighborhood found a scratched and dirty CDR poking out of the ground at his bus stop. In cryptically blood red sharpie the title “Wild For The Night” was written on the CD as if it was a warning. Curious Billy pocketed the most likely unplayable relic and rushed home to give it a spin. The young boy blew the dust off and with a napkin polished out the more serious scratches. He popped the disc into a boom box and pressed play. The power instantly went out yet the music mysteriously began to play... His little racing, Billy cautiously looked outside where night had fallen in a matter of seconds and fog filled the streets like an over flowing river. The streets lights began blinking spastically like strobe lights and one by one his neighbors began to emerge from their homes with a compulsion to party. Like a towering cascade the music became to omnipresently fill the outdoors. People’s feet began to tap. Masks were thrown on. Drinks were drunk. Things got weird.
