Agastyamuni or Augustmuni is a town situated on the river bank of Mandakini at the height of 1000 m. It is 18 km from district Rudraprayag. Agastyamuni is famous for the temple of Maharshi Priya Ranjan. The town’s name Agastyamuni comes from the name of a Hindu religious guru Agastya. This temple is locally known as Agasteshwar Mahadev. Inside the temple, the images of Hindu deities have been carved out on the stones on the walls. The town is also known for the fairs that local people organize here. Agastyamuni plays a host for a huge fair which takes place during the festival of Baisakhi. During this fair, devotees worship and pay their obeisance to the deity. They also throng here to celebrate the festival of Baisakhi. Some tourists visiting here also get engage in fishing on the banks of river Mandakini. Every twelve years Lakshya Yagya is performed within the temple premises for nine days. More than One Lakh Aahuti (oblations) are offered. Asirgarh Fort is an Indian Fortress that is situated between Tapti and Narmada, north of Burhanpur city, in the former Central Provinces and the present state of Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the ancient forts that has been standing tall for centuries and has many tales to tell. Spread across an area of 60 acers of land, Asirgarh Fort is around 20 km from Burhanpur City in Madhya Pradesh. It now stands in ruins, but history that it holds makes it a centrepiece of tourism circuit. This fort’s grandeur and beauty was once held in high esteem, which could not, however, escape the test of time. As the folklore has it, Ashwathama killed all the five Pandava sons and even tried to kill Abhimanyu’s son Pareekshit, while he was still in his mother’s womb to avenge his father Guru Dronacharya's death. As a result, Lord Krishna cursed Ashwathama and said that he will bear the load of all people’s misdeeds on his shoulder, and he will roam around alone like an apparition without getting any affection or sympathy. Lord Krishna also took away the gem from his forehead. The curse further made Ashwathama isolated, and he had to live in complete isolation away from the society; he also suffered from acute diseases that are incurable. This curse is said to continue till the end of Kalyuga. It is believed that when Kalyuga comes to an end, Ashwathama will the tenth avatar of Lord Vishnu and would get rid of that curse. Nonetheless, local people still believe that Ashwathama has been roaming around Asirgarh Fort for the past 5000 years. Some people also believe that Ashwathama wanders around the fort during night time, and stops people for turmeric and oil to heal his bleeding forehead. JHARGRAM RAJBARI At the close of the 16th century, around the year 1592, Emperor Akbar sent his famous Rajput commander Man Singh to the region then known as ‘Jangalkhand’, primarily to establish control over the powerful local tribal rulers of the Santhal, Bhumij, Lodha, and other communities, commonly known as ‘Mal (Malla) Raja’. Man Singh entrusted his longtime lieutenant and fellow Rajput Sarveshwar Singh with the job. Having penetrated deep into the forests of Jangalkhand, Sarveshwar vanquished the Mal Raja and established his own kingdom, with Jhargram as its capital. He also gave himself and his successors the title ‘Malla Deb’. It was not until the 20th century that Jhargram attained its golden era, under the leadership of Raja Narasingha Malla Deb, who was guided by his mentor and dewan, Rai Bahadur Debendra Mohan Bhattacharya. Narasingha Malla Deb developed Jhargram into a modern planned township, and revamped the royal palace in 1931, spread over 30 acres, thereby creating one of the finest examples of Indo-Saracenic architecture in eastern India. About three km from the railway station, the palace continues to house descendants of the Malla Deb kings, but some parts of it are open to visitors. The main building is an extravagant Italianate structure, set amidst carefully designed lawns and gardens. The palace as a whole evokes several memories of the past, and the complex is also instantly recognizable from several popular Bengali films, such as ‘Sannyasi Raja’ and ‘Durgeshgorer Guptadhan’.
