Listen. I get this on a joking level. I get that this is a “I don’t want to burden my friends” thing. I get that this is relatable.

My problem lies in the fact that I have seen this exact post, and many other similarly worded things, being reblogged by people NOT as a joke, or one of those jokes where everyone’s smiling and no one is actually amused.

So many people I know do this. I used to do it. I may still slip up sometimes. But I recognize that if I do this it’s the wrong response.

If someone who genuinely cares for you and loves you asks you how you are

DO. NOT. LIE. TO. THEM.

ESPECIALLY not if you’re then going to reblog something like this, especially when they will SEE it. Because do you know what that does?

They immediately recognize you’re lying. And there are many different responses that that may get from people, depending on the relationship, but none of them are good.

You want the response from an empathetic friend who is close to you (we’ll use me for this example)?

If you’re around them, they KNOW you’re not doing well. If you’re response is “I’m so not ever going to do that but ‘ily thanks I will!’” They KNOW. And then they get to sit there knowing you’re miserable and you’re not giving them an opportunity to help. So now two people are miserable. On top of which, neither knows if the other CAN help. In my case, I’m suddenly wondering if I did something wrong to make you not want to talk to me about it. And if you continue to do this, as many people will, and your shit gets out of control? Now that friend is left to try and pick up the pieces of what could have been a much less catastrophic situation, while also wondering why you didn’t come to them earlier.

THIS IS WHAT FRIENDSHIP IS FUCKERS - GOOD TIMES AND BAD STOP TRYING TO BE PERFECT ALL THE TIME NO ONE IS AND THEN EVERYONE KNOWS THAT EVERYONE IS LYING

the world as a whole would be so much better if we stopped trying to pretend everything was fine.

We are not perfect. We shouldn’t try to be. We all know we’re imperfect.

So can we please
