ITS NOT HOPELESS ITS JUST JANUARY.
Something that bears mentioning: I get why we need to shame straight girls who fetishize mlm ships but. To any straight girls who consistently relate to or resonate with mlm dynamics on a deep level or see themselves in queer male characters. if by any chance this post from a tiny tiny blog crosses your dash. Please take this moment to very privately consider the possibility that you might not be straight. Or a girl.
this is just a callout post for my younger self
Guess how I figured out for certain that I'm not a girl lol
i simply think that 2winz² and professor hidgens should team up and make a working boys musical

Okay so book idea
Main character is robbing a house when they realise they arenāt alone. A kid catches them in the act. Never having been great at dealing with stress, the protagonist blurts out the first thing that comes to mind: āyouāre a wizardā.
A little backstory:
1) The kid is, in fact, a wizard, albeit unaware of this fact.
2) A magic school has been trying to covertly enroll the child, but is thwarted consistently by the parents.
3) The parents are chill but hate the education system or something idk just anything more interesting than the whole āI hate magicā dramatic jazz hands thing. Maybe they just want their child to have basic technological literacy.
So now the school is trying to use the protagonist as an in with the kid, the parents are trying to convince the protagonist not to let the kid into the school, and the protagonist just wants to learn magic goddamn it and also maybe not have to make a living by robbing people.
The kid keeps threatening to call the cops, but the school keeps intervening in increasingly ridiculous ways.
Maybe the child is subject to a prophecy but the parents are philisophically opposed to godly bullshit so have instead made a very complex plan to kill some BBEG thatās off to the side. They are incredibly unhappy to discover that was the deific plan all along.
Or the protagonist deals with the bbeg but the parents have come to see MC as their own kid and thatās good enough for the prophecy.
So instead of stealing a familyās microwave, you end up stealing their hearts
This gives me an even better idea: surgery thief! Half surgeon, half thief. Stealing hearts and giving them to those in need. Like skeletons.
Or cannibals.
Or politicians.
...chaotic good organ harvesting?

hereās a thought: the reason why adult/minor friendships are looked upon with suspicion, and the reason why adults with minor friends are accused of being predatory or having bad intentions, is because we think that minors donāt have anything of value to offer adults that isnāt sex/a relationship. itās a continuation of the way adults devalue minors and their perspectives and contributions to the world.
ā¦.No itās definitely because thereās a huge power imbalance
do you really think we solve that power imbalance with segregation?
op is absolutely right. this is coming from someone who researches and teaches on age and society professionally. modern western society is age-segregated to an unprecedented degree and there is ample evidence that it is absolutely fucking us over. itās linked to everything from economic hardship to mental health crises.
intergenerational friendships are important. adults who never interact with young people outside of a defined institutional relationship with a built-in power imbalance (like being a parent or teacher) donāt develop the capacity to treat young people as equals, which reinforces patterns of abuse, neglect, social disempowerment, and silencing. young people who lack meaningful connections with adults outside of those same institutions miss out on an incredible source of support and guidance. and everyone misses out on the basic human joy of friendships that could have been really meaningful if we didnāt have this weird, broken ideology that says young people have nothing interesting to say, and no value to adults who donāt either want to raise them or exploit them or both.
op is right and they should say it.
My life has gotten so much better since I hit college and befriended people six years older than me, and went to work and befriended people decades older than me. I could have been doing this years ago when I badly needed friends bc I had none. But no, minors canāt talk to adults except when theyāre forced into a lesser role bc THATāS healthy. :/
A college person being friends with an an older adult is one thing, a teen being āfriendsā with an adult is another.
fucking genius how you just missed the point. teach me how to do that
how the fuck are minors supposed to be able to identify adults with bad intentions if they donāt have any positive, healthy relationships with adults outside the context of said adult being an authority figure
like, sure, with any relationship between a minor and an adult, the adult has a responsibility that the minor doesnāt. some shit only comes from life experience. but like⦠that teen who comes to dnd on fridays, the younger coworker, that person met through fandom? iām not gonna pretend weāre not friends just because iām older than they are.
itās not that deep
Like I just. Iām so astounded by the whole āfriendsā thing that the person a couple posts above is implying just cause.
Intergenerational friendships are like??? So varied?????
Like maybe youāre 16 and working your first job, and you have an old Chinese man as a regular who sits at a table and reads the Chinese newspaper his family mails him, and you start sitting down and talking to him when itās slow. And he tells you all about the life heās lived, of being a child in the aftermath of world war two. And he talks to you about the prejudice heās seen, and the way he sees people treat each other, and how much things have changed. And you learn a lot.
Or you meet a 30-something mother of two that walks with a cane in a group therapy session, and when you speak to her she opens up about her struggles with drugs, and how she wishes to stay better so she can be there for her kids. And she teaches you about having a more open mind when it comes to religious beliefs when youāre an edgy atheist teen.
Or youāre very isolated in your hobbies, and you meet a group of college students that share your interests and are fine letting you join in on their card games and D&D, and you not only learn the games but you get used to a group thatās accepting and just wants to have fun and make everyone comfy, and you learn not every group of people has to be judgemental and scary.
Youāre saying that instead of making teens aware of the signs of toxic relationships, and keeping an open line of communication so we can help them take notice of and avoid these things⦠Youād rather we lock teens in a box where theyāre deprived of the positives?
Force so many teens to be around peers that bully and disregard them, when they have prospective friends in local clubs and support groups that just arenāt necessarily in their peer group?
Hardcore Tumblr users really are just puritans huh? Hell even historically, households were made of many generations, and kids helped out in the community and met the adults that kept it going.
Ridiculous
Back in college, one of my friends brought her 12 year old sister over to the dorm when her family was in town.Ā For one night, the whole crew instantly adopted her and went out to a playground at 11 PM and had a blast hanging out together.Ā She gave some solid relationship advice to one of the older members of the friend group (who was, in fact 30 at the time!Ā MyĀ ācollegeā friends included people >10 years older than the frosh), telling this woman more than twice her age that really, she needed to break up with her toxic boyfriend.
Years later we still get updates on her life, and a bunch of those people went to see her perform on stage six years later when she got the lead role in her college(!!!) production ofĀ She Kills Monsters.
Do you know how easy it is for a bunch of 18 to 30 year olds to hang out with a middle schooler and have it be a healthy, fun, and positive experience for everybody involved?Ā Super easy!Ā it turns out that kids are actual people with whole sentient brains and everything.Ā Just be respectful and nice!
This. This, oh my God This. I absolutely adore speaking to people older than me when i meet them on discord in other servers, because they have so much to teach! be it 2 years or 10 years, i love friends like this. they can tell you so much ā”ā”ā”
When I was in my early teens, Iād sit on the curb next to a man in his 90ā²s named Oswin, who would sit by the road in his wheelchair all day and wave to the cars. He told me all sorts of stories about his life (sometimes more than once, which helped me remember them). I wrote part of one into my novel.
I got really close to an adult volunteer with a queer youth group in high school, and she took me in like an odd, overenthusiastic niece. I did have a crush on her a little, but it was the sort of thing that teaches you what you like in a person without meaning anything more than that. She and her wife loaned me a pile of lesbian books to read, taught me to cook, and helped me learn to drive. They were like family.Ā
My grandmotherās friends, who Iāve known all my life, are also my friends. One of them is in the last year of her life now, and as sad as I am to lose her, Iām so grateful to have known her, to have been friends with her as close as she and my grandmother were. Iām also grateful my grandmother and I can share this grief and joy.
Itās possible to theoretically have power over someone and not abuse it. Itās possible to love someone, to be vulnerable with someone, and not be hurt.
āItās possible to love someone, to be vulnerable with someone, and not be hurtā is something I needed to hear today, thanks.
people that act like Britainās colonial past is ancient history, here are some facts:
Afghanistanās independence was in 1919.
Egypt was in 1922.
Iraq was in 1932.
Jordan was in 1946.
India and Pakistan were in 1947.
Myanmar and Sri Lanka were in 1948.
Libya and Oman were in 1951.
Sudan was in 1956.
Ghana and Malaysia were in 1957.
Singapore was in 1959.
Cyprus and Nigeria were in 1960.
Cameroon, Kuwait, Tanzania, and Sierra Leone were in 1961.
Jamaica, Uganda, and Trinidad and Tobago were in 1962.
Kenya was in 1963.
Malawi, Malta, and Zambia were in 1964.
The Gambia and the Maldives were in 1965.
Barbados, Botswana, Lesotho, and Guyana were in 1966.
Yemen was in 1967.
Eswartini (Swaziland), Nauru, and Mauritius were in 1968.
Fiji and Tonga were in 1970.
Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates were in 1971.
The Bahamas was in 1973.
Grenada was in 1974
Seychelles was in 1976.
Dominica, Tuvalu, and the Solomon Islands were in 1978.
Kiribati and Saint Lucia were in 1979.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines were in 1979.
Vanuatu and Zimbabwe were in 1980.
Antigua and Barbuda and Belize were in 1981.
Saint Kitts was in 1983.
Brunei was in 1984.
In addition to that: Northern Ireland is still a British territory. So are the Falkland Islands and Bermuda.
This is in the lifetime of ancestors we have that are still alive. Many of these countries were left in financial ruination after colonization with their resources drained. Many of these countries have been repeatedly bombed by the UK and their allies since independence as well. The very act of independence often resulted in massive loss of life (see the partition of India and Pakistan which resulted in 2 million people dead, 20 million people displaced, and countless others never recovered). Calling it ancient history or underplaying the sheer cruelty of what the British empire did is such a slap in the face to the people who suffered for centuries.
my mutuals could beat up your mutuals⦠but they choose not to, because theyāre also more virtuous than your mutuals
This sounds like something Jesus wouldāve said
āWomenā andĀ āPeople who can become Pregnantā are not synonyms
Not all women can become pregnant. Not everyone who can become pregnant is a woman.Ā
It is important for us to use accurateĀ and specificĀ language when talking about important issues, because we always want to include everyoneĀ who is impacted by an issue. Exclusion and erasure are forms of oppression.Ā

i will defend improvised storytelling till the day i fucking die i think stories told by people under pressure to do it fast, stories told in collaborationā¦. that shits gorgeous and ALIVE. have you ever gone to a writing workshop and someone writes the rawest shit in the entire world during a ten minute free write? playing dnd and some dialogue is so moving it makes you wonder how it came from your dumbass friends? got really into one of thoseĀ āone sentence at a timeā campfire story games and ended up making somethingā totally unrecorded, lost except to the people who were thereā that should have been in the fucking moma?
people are full to the BRIM with stories and honing that storytelling into a specific practice (ex. writing) is for sure a learned skill that takes tons of practice to do effectively butā¦ā¦ itās there. itās there and anyone can tap into it if theyāre given opportunity and an audience to say it to.
look, the point of telling stories is to connect with other people. and all weāve ever done throughout human history is connect connect connect so is it any wonder when you put a human being in front of an outlet and you sayĀ ātell me a storyā, no one stays silent?Ā
i learned that Bill Nye (of Science Guy fame) invented a hydraulic component used on the 747 airliners, and holds three patents for other inventions (x)
he really is a science guy
