The fever had broken, but the air inside the lighthouse tower remained thick and heavy. The doctor stood at his full, imposing height of seven feet, his broad shoulders nearly blocking the light from the spiral staircase. The leather straps of his plague doctor mask creaked slightly as he turned his head, the dark glass lenses fixing squarely on Bubbles."Drink this," he commanded. His voice was a deep, gravelly rasp that seemed to vibrate the very glass of the lighthouse lens. He extended a large, gloved hand holding a vial of thick, violet liquid. "It will stabilize the remaining tremors."

Bubbles took the vial, her blue eyes looking up at the bird-like mask. "You still haven't told me your name. The port authorities just called you 'the doctor.' Surely you have something else I can call you?"The giant paused, his bulky frame perfectly still in the dim amber glow. "Names are for the living, little bird. Or for those who wish to be found. You may call me Doctor. Nothing more, nothing less."

As Bubbles drank the bitter tonic, she watched him over the rim of the glass. He moved with a chilling, deliberate grace, adjusting the heavy dark coat that smelled faintly of old parchment and formaldehyde. He reached into his medical kit, producing a clean silver syringe."I require another sample," the Doctor stated flatly, his tone leaving no room for argument.

"To monitor the toxins in your bloodstream.""Are you sure it's just for monitoring?" Bubbles asked, a faint, daring smile playing on her lips despite her weakness. "I saw you take my hair earlier. And that last vial went straight into your pocket, not your kit.

"The Doctor froze for a fraction of a second. Slowly, he leaned down, his massive form towering over her cot, the long beak of his mask inches from her face. The sheer size of him was terrifying, yet the proximity made her heart race in a completely different way."You are observant for someone so close to the brink," the Doctor murmured, his deep voice dropping to a low whisper. "A rare trait out here in the isolation. Let us call it an exchange. I give you your health, and I keep a few... curiosities. A fair trade, wouldn't you agree?"

"And what exactly do you do with those curiosities?" Bubbles whispered back, completely captivated by the handsome mystery behind the dark leather mask.
