Until the end, when you can see his control start to slip, the closer they get to the end of their last goodbye. You can see the panic just under the surface.

Of course, he never sheds a tear until after she’s gone.

What happens then? He turns into a lunatic for the entire following episode before almost offing himself

I mean, Bad Wolf Bay is a depiction of this impenetrable wall, much like his demeanor. He doesn’t crack once, not even when he almost says I love you. There’s real emotion there, under the surface, and his sincerity is apparent, but it’s like he’s covered himself with a veil of carefully maintained calm. The whole scene has such an ethereal intangibility to it. When it ends, it’s almost like it never happened.

But on his side of the wall– the side she was never able to see– he is shattered, and you just see it in everything. His manic energy, the way he flings himself into this new adventure almost desperately, the way he overreacts to everything that is happening. He treats everything is a hundred times more exciting or magnificent than it really is, with this crazy gleam in his eye.

And in the end, when he’s actually facing the possibility of permanent death, the hesitation he exhibits when Donna tells him to stop. I mean, he actually considers not stopping.
