I kept telling [Sidney] Poitier that Tibbs was a sophisticated detective, not used to being pushed around. I showed him how to do the slap. ‘Don’t hit him on the ear,’ I said. ‘I want you to really give him a crack on the fatty side of his cheek.’ I told him to practise on me. A black man had never slapped a white man back in an American film. We broke that taboo.

The fourth annual SAAM Arcade will be held on August 3 & 4, 2019. This free, family-friendly event invites gamers of all levels to test out new games and replay some of the classics! Each year, the Arcade features arcade cabinets, console games, and a selection of indie games centered around a particular theme.

This year’s theme is BREAKING BARRIERS!

At SAAM, we believe that video games are a medium that has a great capacity for expanding the way Americans tell and experience stories. We also believe that this potential will only be fully realized when game makers, players, characters, companies and cultures are diverse and when all participants receive equitable and respectful treatment within these communities. In order to promote this idea, SAAM is partnering with Tanya DePass of I Need Diverse Games to present a keynote speech at the Arcade.

This year, the Arcade will showcase projects that recognize and relish the diversity of gaming audiences, where a wide-array of players can see themselves and their interests reflected on screen.
