Hiroshima castle and the “setsubun” bean throwing festival on February 3rd. Beans are thrown in order to prevent evil ogres from entering one's house. It is believed that the ogres are warded off by throwing beans, and that good fortune will then come to one's home. It is said that if you catch and eat the same number of beans as your age you will enjoy a year of good health.

Kiomizudera temple and surrounding area, Kyoto It was once believed that surviving the fall from the large stage at the front of Kiomizudera would grant a wish, and so the expression "To jump from the stage at Kiomizudera" came to be, meaning "to take the plunge". These days the practice is banned and people are encouraged instead to drink from the Kiomizudera spring and make their wish.

Wakakusa Yamayaki, Mountain burning, festival in Nara. Every year monks from both the Shinto Shrines and Buddhist temples work together on the festival for the safety and peace in the world. The festival started originally as it was thought the mountain held souls and spirits that needed to be calmed, superstitious citizens began burning the mountain and although this activity was not officially condoned to begin with it later became a regular organised and controlled event.
