I have this headcanon that Magnus still understands and uses the Victorian flower language.

• Alec gets all the flowers that mean nice, romantic things, and once he understands what they mean he sends them too. He keeps the ones he gets in his office, and everyone has stopped questioning this by now.

• Everyone in the Downworld Cabinet gets flowers at some point.

• Luke makes a note of his and googles them later. They always represent nice things like friendship and respect, though, so he’s always glad to receive them.

• Raphael rolls his eyes like a teenager who’s embarrassed by his old fashioned parent, but he does still appreciate the idea.

• Meliorn also appreciates the gesture, and also sends flowers back. They’re usually ones he grows himself. He is somehow able to convey messages that the original flower language didn’t cover- everything from “The Queen says hi” to “Is Raphael seeing anyone?” Magnus isn’t exactly sure how he manages it.

I want Shadowhunters to portray homophobia and I want them to portray it pretty heavily. Now, before you balk, listen to me. Alec’s season one storyline included a very good portrayal of internalized homophobia. That doesn’t disappear just because he came out. He will still struggle. Heavily. He had a very good reason for being afraid and for being so repressed - Shadowhunter culture is very homophobic and what I think wasn’t adressed all that much in season 1, it very much relies on reproduction - the more soldiers, the stronger and the more efficient they are. That puts an incredibly heavy burden on young adults in that society - and an even heavier one on Shadowhunters who are not straight. So in addition to Alec not feeling right and feeling alone, because he is gay and that’s unheard of, he would also feel like a failure in regards to his culture and family, because of that inherent pressure that Clave enforces.

Now.I don’t want them to brush all of that away and Alec’s coming out to not have any consequences. I want a portrayal of those consequences. I want a portrayal of homophobia that you can’t react to and have to clench your teeth through, because you can’t talk back to your superiors. I want a portrayal of homophobia executed by Alec’s peers and him scoffing and fighting back. I want a portrayal of homophobia that tears him on the inside and he has to struggle through it quietly until he is in a safe place and he can let go. I want a portrayal of non-active homophobia coming from Allies or Family - because inherent homophobia is a thing and straight people sometimes don’t realize that they are being hurtful. I want all of that and I want Alec to develop and evolve and fight back. I want him to understand when it’s okay to stand back and back off, because it’s not safe for him. I want him to confront people that he is close to and those that hurt him by accident, because they can’t understand what being non-straight is. I want him to talk to Magnus and I want him to find that comfort in him and them to discuss this shared experience.

Shadowhunters did a good job portraying racism. Now, they better stand to attention and don’t brush Alec’s struggles off. Discrimination runs on different axes and I want to see that on the screen and I want to see it adressed.
