i saw the original the taking of pelham one two three as part of a series of heist movies my local movie theater is showing. before the movie, the artistic director came onstage and talked about how he'd read an article that said that more heist movies get made during an economic downturn, so he decided to test that theory by showing some heist films. he then was like "i hope this does not inspire you to try this here" to which half the audience replied with the fact that a good quarter of the system is currently down for maintenance.

he then went on to explain that we were watching a 35mm from the movie's original theatrical run so it was a little faded (as tends to happen with film over time) but that it should not deter us from enjoying the film.

finally, he mentioned some of the hazards of filming the movie, such as the dust in the tunnels and that they were never fully sure that the third rail was off so they used to leave chains on top of it so they would know if it turned on.

in short: support your local indie movie theater

#i also had a great conversation with someone a couple seats down from me about the thomas crown affair because that's also #on the theater's heist movie list and is a great movie. my seatmate said the remake is pretty good too so i'll have to watch it sometime
