Kazan had to beg Fox to release Wild River in foreign territories, where the reviews were better but the business just as bad. He tried to buy the picture back from the studio, but its price ($300,000) was beyond his means. So, without the stars we want to nostalgize, taking up an ostensible subject that most people today have never heard of, it long languished in the land of Nod, on the far side of Eden (or East of Eden). It is a particular pleasure to welcome it back to another land — the land of the living — this clear-eyed, finely judged deeply humane story about the costs and consequences of the choices we make in pursuit of the principles we cannot help but embrace.
