Why Lapis and Peridot fighting in âThe New Crystal Gemsâ was not a bad thing
Up until The New Crystal Gems, Peridot and Lapis had been shown to be sharing their lives in perfect harmony. Â They seemed very much like the âperfectâ couple â always happy and relaxed around each other, and just enjoying one anotherâs presence.
However, thereâs no such thing as the perfect relationship. Couples do fight and they do bicker, often over the silliest of things. Â The expression âbickering like an old married coupleâ exists for a reason, after all. Â And it seems that the Crew are very much aiming for the âmarried coupleâ vibe with Lapis and Peridot.
This started in Beta. Â A lot of people commented that Peridot and Lapis were âbasically marriedâ in this episode â because of how happy, supportive, and ultimately domestic theyâve become.
Although this appears to fall apart somewhat in The New Crystal Gems, itâs very important to bear a couple of things in mind.
Firstly, look how light Lapisâ touch in particular is here.  Theyâre just gently pushing and shoving each other around, not really wanting to hurt each other. They were both using their elemental powers at the time, and could have turned these on each other if they actually wanted to deal some damage.  But they didnât.  They were ultimately vying for an audience and trying to steal the limelight from one another, but neither of them was annoyed enough to actually want to hurt the other â and thatâs a very good thing indeed, because it shows that they still care about each other.  And that this disagreement was quite trivial in nature.
Itâs also worth noting that when Peridot is dangling off of Lapisâ arm, Lapis seems quite unfazed by this. Previously, sheâs been extremely quick to withdraw physical contact from people when sheâs angry with them (most notably Jasper in both The Return and Alone At Sea), but thatâs not the case here. Â This suggests to me that sheâs so comfortable with Peridot that sheâs absolutely fine with her physical contact, even in the middle of a fight with her.
When they have their verbal fight afterwards, it quickly descends into name-calling and general pettiness, which is often the way when couples have an argument. Â Peridot even sayâs âIâm leavingâ â which sounds very much like the sort of thing that would be said by a disgruntled person whoâs about to storm out from their lover in the heat of an argument.
Marriages (and long term, serious relationships in general) arenât all happy and lovely 100% of the time. In fact, you donât even need to look beyond Steven Universe itself to see this.
In Keystone Motel, one of our canon couples, Ruby and Sapphire, had a huge disagreement over Pearlâs behaviour in the previous episode. Â This argument was so extreme that it forced their inseparable fusion to fall apart. It took the entirety of the episode for them to finally come back together again. Â But they did come back together again â they realised that their behaviour was wrong, and they shared a loving moment together before re-fusing into Garnet again.
And that, ultimately, is the single most important thing to bear in mind.
Peridot and Lapisâ fight ended with them both looking very guilty indeed, after Connie managed to talk some sense into them both.Â
Then, by the end of the episode, everything was back to normal â theyâd made a collaborative âmeep morpâ for Greg (the new car wash sign) and were perfectly happy again, even pausing to do a âvictory poseâ upon Peridotâs insistence.
The fact that Peridot and Lapis have had their first ever âloverâs tiffâ means that their relationship is being built in a meaningful, and ultimately realistic, way - which is excellent to see.

Late as always~ When Laz was interrogated by Peri, probably she was denying knowing âthe Stevenâ, idk~ I wonder how this scenario went so I used this over those âsometimes I miss homeworldâ feels they might have right now :3c I guess the interrogation was in HomeworldâŠright?
This week was fun!

I love dresses
finding veggiehead (closed rp w/ magic-and-morps)
The small, green gem ran frantically in search of her âbarnmateâ, tripping over her recently shortened, clumsy legs and knocking over a few assorted items of farming equipment in the proccess. When she finally spots the blue gem, sheâs twitching nervously and gasping for air
âL-Lazuli! We have a potentially catastrophic situation on our hands!â
Lapis was sitting on an old lounge chair, reading the same issue of âPretty Hairstylistâ for what must have been the tenth time, when she heard sounds that could only have been made by a certain green gem. Her theory was proven to be correct when she heard the panicked voice, and saw the unmistakable hair.
After setting down the magazine, she looked at Peridot, and asked, âWhat is it?â
Peridot pauses for a few moments taking a few sips of air, before gesturing widely. âV-Veggie  head⊠Veggie head ran off!! I was conducting a series of experiments to test a theory I had about my newly found metal-based powers on a nearby piece of aluminum shrapnel⊠A-And the metal, in the simplest terms imploded and startled Veggie head⊠he t-took off and I couldnât catch him⊠he just ran off into the fields and he was too fast for me..âÂ
She catches her breath a bit more after she was finished her wordy explanation, glancing down at her legs with an angry expression; no doubt hating her shorter limbs even more in that moment.
Lapis stood up and made her way over to Peridot, and rested a hand on her shoulder. âOkay, first of all you need to calm down.â She chuckled softly. âWeâll find him, but you need to take some deep breaths.â
Lapis would be lying if she said she wasnât worried about Veggiehead, but she knew that Peridot needed to calm down before they did anything else.
âHHHHHHHHHâ The small gem groaned, almost vibrating as sweat drops formed underneath her visor, her pupils flickering around rapidly as she stared up at Lapis. âI AM CALM⊠WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU THINK OTHERWISE?â Despite this, she attempts to regain her composure, swallowing hard and brushing some dust off of her uniform, it very possible that she may have taken a tumble in the chase of Veggie Head.
Lapis cocked an eyebrow. âPeridotâŠlook at yourself.â She gestured to the green gem in front of her. âHow is any part of this âcalmâ?â
Then, turning to the entrance of the barn, she thought for a moment before saying, âHe canât be far. I can fly around to see if I can find him from the air.â She was quite worried, but didnât want to show it.
The tiny green girl bit her bottom lip, deciding that she really needed to take Lapisâ advice, although it embarrassed her to admit she was being quite irrational. She smoothed some fly aways of her wild, neon yellow hair away from her face and adjusted her visor before clearing her throat and promptly locking her arms around Lapisâ waist, rather presumptiously. She stared up at her companion with a way more dramatic look than what the situation called for. âLetâs go then.â
Lapis couldnât help but chuckle slightly, and then spread her wings. âHold on, okay?â She warned, before taking off into the sky. After steadying herself just above the field, she began to slowly scan the area.
Lapis had hoped that Veggiehead would be in sight, but it seemed as though he had wandered a bit further than she had initially thought.
âLet me know if you see him, okay?â
She nods a few times, meeping quietly when Lapis takes off the ground.Â
She intently scans her eyes across the ground, squinting slightly and frowning to herself. âItâs only been a few minutes.. how far could one animate vegetable go??â She cups her spare hand, the one that wasnât clinging around Lapisâ waist, around her mouth and yells. âVEGGIEHEAD! YOU SHOW YOUR LITTLE PUMPKIN BUTT THIS INSTANT!! YOUR MOTHERS ARE VERY WORRIED ABOUT YOU!âÂ
Lapis wouldnât admit it, but she was getting quite worried as well. No matter where she looked, she couldnât seem to spot the pumpkin.
When Peridot began shouting, Lapis lifted her hand to steady the gem. The last thing she wanted was Peridot to slip free and fall off of her.
âVeggie!â Lapis began calling, âWhere are you?!â When there was no response, she looked over her shoulder. âShould we land? Maybe weâll have better luck on the groundâŠâ
She nods nervously, her tiny fingers curling tightly around Lapisâ arm, her face frozen in a concerned expression.
âI wish we had one of those collaring devices that human dogs have⊠They r-really should make them pumpkin sized. At least that way if he got lost any humans that found him would know he was ours.â
âI agree with you, Peridot.â Lapis responded, âAlthough, I donât think anyone else has a living pumpkin, so weâre pretty much on our own in that sense.â
Then, angling her body, Lapis drifted towards the ground. She took a bit of time to do so, as she didnât want to potentially startle Veggiehead, if he so happened to be in the area. She also used the time to take in her surroundings, constantly scanning the area as she looked for anything that resembled the pumpkin.
As she neared her destination, Lapis made a point to land softly, not wanting to rattle Peridot any further in her clearly distraught state.
âOkay.â Lapis took a deep breath as she looked around, once safely on the ground. âWhere is that pumpkinâŠ?â
She continued to look around her, but to no avail. Just where had Veggiehead run off to?
As they land Peridot is still clinging to Lapis arm, making tiny nervous Peridot noises underneath her breath. âW-What do human dogs usually respond to? Maybe we should contact the other crystal gems and ask them? What if we try to communicate with him in his native tongue??â She perks up at her deduction, clearly thinking she had hit a stroke of brilliance, before she starts barking, poorly.Â
Lapis couldnât help but snort. âDo you really think heâll respond to that?â
She looked around some more, continuing to scan the area before something caught her eye. Rushing over to the crops, she pushed some corn stalks out of the way and crouched down.
âPeridot!â She called to the green gem. âI found some tracks in the dirt. They look like they could be Veggieâs.â
Peridot blushes and looks down. âIt couldnât hurt.â
She quickly scampers over to where peridot found right supposed tracks and she looks at them intently, brushing her fingers along the tracks.
âThe earth here is still relatively soft, so these tracks are probably fresh. He canât be far.â
She looks as if sheâs remembered something, reaching into the waistband of her uniform and pulling out some tiny bone shaped treats.
âSteven gave these to me. I donât know if theyâll help but apparently human dogs enjoy them! I normally wouldâve thought to have brought some vegetable based treats. But I decided thatâd probably be in bad taste.â
Lapis looked at the treats, and then offered a smile as she ruffled Peridotâs hair. âI donât know why you hate being called cute, because youâre really cute. Thatâs really thoughtful of you, Peridot.â
The gem stood up, and used her hand to shield the sun as she looked around. âThose treats might work, though. Veggie really did like that cake. Letâs follow the tracks.â
Lapis began walking into the crops, following the little pumpkin prints that had been left behind.
She smiles, her cheeks flushing a darker shade of green and her eyes glinting beneath her visor. âI-I donât mind it so much when itâs you calling me itâŠâ
She glances shyly to the ground and fiddles with her hands before taking a few steps further into the area where the tracks lead.
âWhat if we set up a little area with some of the treats. That might lead him towards it if thereâs enough treats concentrated in one area? Hopefully his nose will pick it up⊠You know.. If he has oneâŠâ
Lapis thought on it for a moment, before nodding in agreement. âThatâs a good idea. Itâs probably better than following him blindly.â
She figured that Veggiehead would go for the treats, if nothing else. He seemed to have quite the sweet tooth â if she could even call it that. It was odd that the pumpkin could eat at all, but there was no use trying to make sense of it.
âSo, where should we set it up?â Lapis asked, her gaze on Peridot.
She humms to herself, glancing around the ground before she places the treats in a more open section of the clearing where it would be easy to see the tiny pumpkin doggy if he wandered over.
She then sits down crosslegged a fair enough distance from her little set up, patting the ground next to her with her hand.
âThere. Sit. With any luck heâll wander back over here. If not I think we should probably call the crystal gems and see if they can help us at all.â
She bites her bottom lip as she says that last part; this was her fault and she didnât want to have to get anyone else involved to fix it. She wasnât /as/ embarrassed to ask Lapis for help though because as far as she was considered, the little pumpkin dog was both of theirs in equal parts.
It also was nice to be able to have an excuse to hold onto the blue gem as she flew them across the fields, but she didnât want to think about that in a time like this.
Lapis watched with an amused expression as Peridot placed the treats on the ground with care, seemingly calculating her actions. Lapis could only hope that Peridotâs actions werenât in vain, as she could see how hard she was trying.
Once Peridot was finished, Lapis watched as she sat down some distance away from the treats. After motioning for Lapis to sit beside her, the blue gem made her way over to the spot. She sat beside Peridot, all the while listening to what she was saying.
âI agree.â Lapis responded thoughtfully. âWeâve tried just about everything at this point, so calling them might be our only other option.â
Then, looking at the smaller gem beside her, she sighed. Lapis could clearly see the distress on Peridotâs face. âHeyâŠâ Lapis rested a hand on her barn mateâs shoulder. âDonât worry. Weâll find him, okay?â
She sighs. Her breath leaving her in a shudder. âIâm sure it will be eventually. Iâm just still not used to being allowed to make mistakes on this planet. Being an error 2 peridot, back on homeworld I wasnât allowed to make mistakes. Ever. You know how Agates enjoy their whips.â
She cringes inwardly. âI know this planet and the people on it arenât like that. But I still feel like Yellow Diamond and the Agates are still monitoring me somehow. Waiting for me to make a mistake.â
Lapis frowned. âPeridot, itâs notââ
The blue gem had to stop herself. No, it was very real to Peridot; she could see that just by the discomfort in her eyes. Being of a higher standing in the court, Lapis never dealt with such things. However, she did remember seeing how gems were mistreated, and it made her sick to think that Peridot endured that kind of punishment.
Taking a deep breath, Lapis moved her hand from Peridotâs shoulder. Then, she intertwined her fingers with the green gemâs. âI can understand why you feel that way. Itâs scaryâŠand I couldnât imagine going through something like that. However,â Lapis looked into Peridotâs eyes, her own filled with nothing but genuine concern, âyou donât have to feel that way, not anymore. Veggie running off has nothing to do with you as a gem.â
Squeezing Peridotâs hand comfortingly, Lapis offered a smug smile. âAnd hey, if anyone ever tries to hurt you again, Iâll be here. Itâll be just like when the Rubies came from Homeworld. Except this time, theyâll have to go through me, before they can even look at you.â
Peridot smiles shyly, she knows this kind of brutality was something that Lapis didn't have to deal with being such a high ranking gem but she also knew that the water gem understood abuse and fear.
She initially felt silly bringing it up, but felt a lot better now. Even relieved enough to the point that tiny, happy tears bead up in the corners of her eyes. She rubs her thumb over the back of Lapis' hand, a darker shade of green sweeping over her cheekbones.
"T-Thank you, Lapis.. That means more than you know."
