Bill Gates promises business at the speed of thought, but what capitalism delivers is thought at the speed of business. A simulation of innovation and newness that cloaks inertia and stasis.

But, then, the police are not concerned with logic or justice. What they seek is a target, to mask their absolute ignorance of the cause, of the psychology of a political act.

That's another tragic dimension of recent condi-tions-that artists of such radicality as Genzken and Hirschhorn, who have developed practices over a long period of time with real resistance and resilience, now face a situation in which their critical impact is either completely ignored or easily absorbed and affirmatively covered up. Also, as individuals— and unfortunately this is true for both artists, to my mind-they have succumbed to the vertigo of their own successful reception such that there's little resistance or resilience left. And there's no critical intervention on the part of curators to protect them from their own success. For me there's hardly anything more calamitous than seeing a recent Genzken exhibition or Hirschhorn project, because, even though they're great figures who have really transformed our thinking about sculptural practice and public space, they're now paraded around as warhorses of deranged object production. Their critical potential is overwhelmed by a curated theatrics of derangement that everybody acclaims without any reflection as to what the implications really are.

Metaphysics, and still more theology, are scandalously anthropomorphic. Both are reduced to a supreme coquetry of man, in ecstasy before his own genius. As soon as one glances at his ramblings, there is not one that escapes ridicule.
