This is a section of a large image of the full disk of the Earth (Full resolution: 10848x10848) as seen by the GOES-16 geostationary weather satellite. The image is a GeoColor data product, which is created by combining multiple GOES-16 color channels with city light data from Suomi NPP. The result is a hybrid image that approximates a visual perspective with a ‘high dynamic range’, allowing daytime areas and city lights to been seen simultaneously. GeoColor is created by the Colorado Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA).  GOES-16 is operated by NOAA and has been commissioned as GOES-EAST on December 18th, 2017. You can view the most recent GOES imagery using the SLIDER web application and download archive imagery from the NOAA GOES-16 server.
