The Reunion
Everyone kept saying that Hell was empty and all the devils were here, but what about Heaven? Were the angels here, too?
littleseeker:
âNot badly,â Emma replied, âtwisted my shoulder,â she added, knowing David was not going to do anything else until he received every confirmation she could give. She knew he still woke up dreaming about his wife, that he still lived in terror of something happening to another person while they were near him. Privately Emma thought that he was in the wrong line of work, but she knew better than to voice that aloud. It seemed like all the hunters she encountered either were hell bent on revenge or upholding their family name. She wasnât sure where she fit in yet, but David was definitely in the revenge camp.Â
She didnât bother to ask whether or not he was okay. She was quickly learning that David could have been impaled and would still dismiss it as a flesh wound. Fortunately whatever was up with her shoulder just made her move her neck slowly. Her eyes widened and then narrowed at the blood that streaked the side of his face. There was blood on the window as well. Heâd banged his head hard. How hard, she had no idea. But hard enough that she knew it was probably worth it to figure out what the nearest hospital was. First things first though. She reached down and thumbed the catch on her seatbelt. It made her shoulder ache but everything held. Though she tried to open the door, after a brief struggle she realized between the snow and the collision, nothing was happening on that front.
Rolling down the window, she eased herself between the seat and the airbag and then out the window, landing easily on her feet. That wasâit was best not to dwell on that. On the fact that everything her father had done with her, all the things sheâd thought were just games, those were anything but. Her balance, her speed, even her basic fighting abilities were leagues ahead of where they should have been considering how long sheâd known about the supernatural. And that was all because of her father. Swallowing back an unexpected wave of what she hoped was just bitterness, Emma moved towards the hood of the car and winced at the sight of it. She had been in a car wreck before. Recently, when a vampire had jumped out into the road and she had slammed into a tree. Â Sheâd almost bled out in the car, if not for a passing witch slash nurse she probably would have.Â
âWeâre not driving out of this one,â she said looking at the metal. Basic repairs she could do. Anything like this though was going to require more than a patch job, âfucking October blizzards,â she muttered, âI hate this town already,â putting her hands on her hips she looked at David, âso, any chance your phone was plugged in?â
As far as that crash went, shoulder injuries were minor. It couldâve been much worse.
âWellâŚI guess we need to see whatâs nearby,â he said, still gingerly touching his head. Whatever Podunk town they were in had to have some dinky motel they could sleep in until the storm had passed and the car was fixed. He knew a hospital visit would be in their future, unfortunately. People might stare if he didnât.
David watched Emma expertly maneuver herself out of the car despite her shoulder, the car door too jammed to allow her any chance to get out the old-fashioned way. While David wanted to get out and help, his head was telling him to do otherwise. So he stayed in the driverâs seat, gathering what bags he could from the back and placing an old blanket overtop them to keep them concealed. They were too big to pass through the crack in the window Emma made, and he wasnât sure the other windows were fully operational with the conditions they dealt with.
The act of moving made his head throb, but he did his best to ignore it.
âThat bad, huh?â he asked. She had a point though. Fucking October blizzards were going to be the death of him, apparently. And what a shitty day for the weather to decide it was going to throw a snowy tantrum. He sighed, deciding it was time to risk the effort and get out of the car. David didnât look nearly as graceful as he thought Emma had looked, but seeing as he was bigger than her and he was dealing with an ever-growing headache, maybe he could let the embarrassment slide this time.
âI donât like it either.â Small towns hadnât been his favorite for some time now. He pulled his phone out of his pocket to check the charge. âNo, but itâs at fifty percent,â he said, handing Emma the cell. David wasnât in the mood to deal with social graces and loud talking. His eyes couldnât help but scan her shoulder to see how she was handling it, but Emma was tough. Mentally and physically, that girl was tough. She had to be to hang around his sorry ass.
David pulled his jacket tighter around him. âSee anything good we could go to?â He hadnât been paying that much attention to what was outside. Obviously. And he was trying to hold off on going to the hospital. Obviously.
Emma ignored the landscape that rolled by outside her window.
Her eyes were on the gold band she was rolling between her fingers, something she hadnât done since her father disappeared. No, she mentally corrected. Since he was murdered. The word rolled around in her head. When her father had been alive, she had largely been left to her own devices. She had gotten into all sorts of reckless trouble, never realizing why he was always gone. Or why he never got upset when she played too rough with the other kids. She had thought that her days of being stupid and reckless were behind her when Liam had started helping her string everything together. Apparently she was wrong.
Her fingers closed into a fist around the ring as she saw the carâs other occupant shift. Of all the souvenirs David Foster could have left Mystic Falls with, she was pretty sure she was the last one heâd considered bringing with him. But when sheâd knocked on his door, half expecting him to just be gone, heâd opened it up and handed her his keys. Of course once heâd gotten his cast off he had immediately gotten back into the drivers seat. Which, Emma had a feeling was tied a lot more to the general waves of mistrust that seemed to pour off him at every moment than her own driving abilities. Which were not bad at all. She was actually a good driver by any standard.
Except the one that would have prevented the collision.
It was odd how one moment they were fine, the next the car was sliding and then there was a thud that seemed to echo through her whole body. Emma knew better than to tense, which probably saved her some broken bones. Which was good because she vaguely remembered that they had no idea where they were. There was a terrific bang that made her wonder about one of the guns that were all over the place, a moment before she realized it was just the airbags deploying. When the crash had run its course and the momentum had worn off, she was actually amazed at how white everything managed to be. Then she realized they had managed to find the one place in the middle of nowhere that was having what appeared to be a late October blizzard. Carefully she sat up and gave her head an experimental turn wincing as something in her shoulder pulled.Â
âDavid?â she prodded the carâs other occupant, hoping for a response. Â
âIâm driving,â heâd said to her. It was not a question. There were no ifs, ands, or buts. His cast was off, and it was time he got back behind the steering wheel.
The passengerâs seat just wasnât for him. It gave him time to think. Time to think about the trinket heâd taken with him from the hellhole he never wanted to see again. The fact that she was even in the car with him was a testament to how much he trusted her and cared about her, but there were still times when old habits died hardâŚor not at all, really. Theyâd put all their feelings out on the table before they left, but he still had Emma at armâs length. Sometimes he kissed her with an intimacy he hadnât felt in a long time, and sometimes it was barely a peck. Sometimes he couldnât get close enough to her, and sometimes he couldnât be far enough away. The only constant about their relationship were the nightmares he woke in a cold sweat from. The ones where it was her body on the bathroom floor instead of Sarahâs.
The driverâs seat helped him forget some of that. Except when heâd catch his eyes drifting toward her, and heâd see the ring she played with. Then he remembered everything she was already dealing with. He remembered she was taking as much of a risk on him as he was taking on her. Thisâwhatever it wasâwas new for both of them. He looked ahead of him again and saw he was going slightly over the speed limit. He slowed down.
Unfortunately, it wasnât in time.
Ice was a tricky thing, especially during a blizzard. Sometimes you just didnât see that shit coming. The car hit a particularly slick patch, and David felt the control slip from his fingers, even though his knuckles turned white from gripping the wheel so hard. Everything after that happened too fast. He didnât have a chance to turn and look at Emma before hearing the airbags explode. The only problem was that they only worked if his head whipped forward. It didnât keep his head from slamming into the window, causing black spots to dance across his vision. The pain was excruciating, but it wasnât long after that before the world finally stopped spinning.
He tenderly lifted a hand to the left side of his head, wincing when he made contact. He felt the warm trickle of blood across his fingertips. Great. That was a headache that wouldnât go away for a while. On the bright side, he heard Emma say his name and felt the sharp poke of her finger. That made for one less thing to worry about.
âSorry,â he groaned. Carefully, he turned his head a little to give her a once over. âAre you hurt?â

littleseeker:
Emma ducked her head and smiled when David told her that he wanted a life with her, echoing the sentiment. He had an uncanny ability to know what she needed, sometimes before she did. It had been that way longer than it had any right to be, but considering they were for all intents and purposes living together before they even went on their first date, Emma imagined that slowly learning how to be with another person was something else she wasnât really going to experience. She had given up on that sort of thing a long time ago, around the time the friends she had bothered to keep in touch with were slowly entering more serious relationshipsâeven if back then she was still in a strange state of denial about the direction her love life was taking.Â
She nodded against his chest when he said someday. Practically Emma knew that when they started actively, she was going to have to take a back seat when it came to hunting. None of the female hunters she knew had kids and the idea of nine months without any kind of fight made her stomach flop, but Emma knew that if there was any way of getting through that with her sanity in tact, it was going to be with David. She looked at him when his brow furrowed and he mentioned dates. She swore that she saw something protective in his eyes and it made her smile. She had absolutely no trouble imagining David putting the fear of god into a kid who came by to take theirs out on a date. Â
âI think weâve got some time before we have to worry about that,â she pointed out, pushing herself up, âthough Iâm sure when we find a house you can swing by the local schools and start getting a feel for potential threats,â she deadpanned.
Then she realized that they were actually going to have to look at schools. Not seriously, not yet, but if they were looking at a house with bedrooms that would someday have kids in them, they were going to need to go to school too. Though she was absolutely certain that their kids were going to know about the supernatural and what their parents did, she was equally certain they were going to go to school. She realized that her eyes were distant too, the same soft smile on Davidâs lips echoed on hers. It seemed real, the idea of their family. More than that it seemed like the steps were being laid out to get to it. Small ones, but Emma wasnât in a huge rush. And the idea of family being just her and David for a while longer wasnât one she was going to object to.Â
She was still on top of him when his arm tightened around her, pulling their bodies closer together. Emma ducked her head. Unbound, her hair was long and fell around their faces, half hiding them. Davidâs arm remained tight around her as he nudged her back and his fingers began to climb the length of her spine. Her breath caught in her throat. She was in a thin t-shirt. She could feel his warmth against the length of her torso where they were pressed together. Hell she could feel the callouses on his fingers. When they brushed against the bare skin at the nape of her neck and then slid into her hair, she bit her bottom lip. Suddenly there was definitely too much fabric between them. She turned her head as Davidâs lips met hers, letting go of her bottom lip to part them under his. He didnât wait to deepen the kiss and Emma met him eagerly, her legs tightening around his hips when he bucked up. Suddenly she was both very happy and wildly frustrated that she was wearing leggings. It was hard not to make any noise as David kissed her until her toes curled edging just underneath his thighs.Â
Not trusting her voice she nodded when he mentioned the study heâd seen. She flattened one hand against the seat cushion and pushed back. His arms remained tight around her as he sat up. Emma locked her ankles behind his back and wrapped her arms around his neck. They were fitted tightly together on the couch and though Emma was definitely sure that the kids were not waking up and their friends werenât coming home anytime soon, when she echoed his earlier hip buck with one of her own, she realized that having a door at the moment was a very, very good idea.Â
The moment the door of the study was shut, Emma pulled him back against her, pressing her back to the door. Learning to read someoneâs body language was an essential thing for a hunter, both for friends and foes. With David it was on a whole other level. Now it was easier to say what they were thinking but for a long time it wasnât. The messages still came across though, in the way their hands would catch under the table or the way his arms would tighten around her after a bad dream. Especially in the way they kissed. She knew in this moment there was absolutely no need for translation as she slid her arms around him and pulled him closer, standing on her toes to even out their height difference as her fingers dug into the muscles of his back.Â
Yes, Iâm afraid of falling in love. Okay? You make me feel like Iâm on top of the world and thatâs a very long way to fall.

Demma Fairytale AU: Princess Emma hates being cooped up in her room and wishes to leave the castle. One night she finally escapes to seek an adventure, but much to her surprise, she is followed by one of her fatherâs surly guards. She thinks she doesnât need a bodyguard in the outside world. She thinks he only followed her because her father would want him to. She doesnât realize sheâs in for a surprise.
âYou can go back now. I made it safely to town. If my father asks, you did a swell job protecting me,â she said, waving him off as she hitched her skirts up and headed toward the tavern.
âIâm not leaving,â he said, marching stoically behind her. It wasnât like he wanted to be here, but since she wouldnât stop trying to escape the damn castle, there wasnât much he could do except follow. âIâll go back if you do.â
Emma groaned. âThat hasnât worked the last ten times you tried, and itâs not working now. So stop trying to make me return to that prison and have a drink with me. At least you might be some fun then.â
David rolled his eyes. It was going to be a long night.

Iâm in love with you because you make me feel safe. It sounds corny and vague. People always talk about feeling safe with someone and you wonder what it even means. I still donât really know. All I know is that when Iâm with you, I feel like Iâm clutching a giant thing of pepper spray or reliving a moment of being carried to bed by my parents when I was five years old and fell asleep in front of the television. All day long, I can feel fragile, like a raw nerve, and when I come home to you, itâs like I just put on the thickest winter coat and installed bulletproof windows in my apartment. âHoney, Iâm homeâŚand no longer terrified.â
Ryan OâConnell, This is Why Iâm in Love With You (via 5000letters)
Itâs not Budapest
Practicality had never been something Emma excelled at. In this case though, she was pretty sure sheâd been unusually practical given how David and doctors usually went. Not that she could blame him. Sh wasnât really a fan herself. His arm seemed to be the worst of it. It didnât look broken but she knew if it wasnât better soon he was going to need x-rays. None of her injuries mattered except for the one that was bleeding. Sighing she fished out a few of the suture kits and got to her feet, dragging a chair over and straddling it.Â
âThis is why I didnât get a white couch,â she said matter of factly tossing the hearing aide onto the table, âalso you might have to cut this off me,â she added.Â
Some people, like her boss, would definitely have questioned her offering her back and a long knife to a man who had tried to kill her. But Emma had no illusions about the angle of their bodies making a difference whether she lived or died. If David wanted her dead she would be.Â
David took the knife and kit without saying a word, but not missing the significance behind it. Emma was probably the only one in the organization who would have the courage to make herself so vulnerable to him. She was the only one who trusted him enough to do it. He had no intention of breaking that trust.
âGood idea,â he agreed, imagining blood droplets on a brand new couch. David took the knife and cut her shirt open so he could reach the wound with ease. He took his time sewing it shut, wanting to do the job properly and keep her in as little pain as possible. Considering what theyâd just went through, he knew that was almost impossible, but it was what it was. Might as well try.
When he finished, he bit off the string, his fingers ghosting along his handiwork. The feel of her skin against his fingertips sent such a jolt through his veins that he snapped his hand back as if her back were on fire. âAll finished,â he said, clearing his throat and standing up so he could clean the mess theyâd made.
