If Ellis were the true, charitable hero, he would have believed in MC all along. He would have given her time to write her own songs and create the image she wanted to create. He would have helped rehabilitate her image after the Vinyls fiasco instead of banishing her indefinitely until he saw fit to bring her back. No, this is not realistic to the way the real music industry works, but we aren't calling real record label execs heros either.

Was this MC a dumbass at times? For sure. She's not perfect either, but if she was, she wouldn't have been as interesting. Would you have enjoyed this story if MC gave up everything she believed in to fit the image the record label wanted for her? It may have been dumb and/or risky depending on your interpretation, but in the end she chose to leave to make the kind of music she wants and be the artist she wants to be. She did that knowing she might not be as successful. If you chose to appeal to Ellis, he just lets her go. If he really was the hero, he could have said, "MC, stay and I'll let you have control of your career and your image." But because he's a businessman first, he wasn't going to take that risk.
