            The readings about copyrights and image property were pretty interesting but to be honest I’m still confused about who owns an image if its online. I thought that if an image is used by another artist and manipulated that a certain degree then it becomes its own different image. In the case of Shepard Fairey I believe he changed the Obama picture more than enough for it to be considered a “new” and “different” image. And yet there was still a case that went to court and a settlement. So does this rule only work sometimes? And if it does then when is it appropriate to create “new” images rather than make a court case over it. I suppose it has a lot to do with money and egos.

             Another intriguing point was from the second reading about Ryan McGinley. To me it looks like he did use a lot of the ideas from the other artist. However I wouldn’t call that stealing. If nobody were allowed to use other people’s ideas there wouldn’t be any advancements within the art world or any other field for that matter in my opinion. All of the technological advancements and artistic movements in our world have all stemmed from one persons initial idea or action. And them more and more people use it for inspiration and it grows more different. I can understand how it can be frustrating to see your work greatly influencing other people’s work to the point of extreme similarity. However in a field such as art with really has no rules or even a concrete definition, its hard to justify and arguments about appropriation and inspiration. I think that’s just how it goes sometimes even though it may not be the fairest thing to happen.

Project 2

Artist: Pablo Valbuena 

Pictured above are screenshots from one of Pablos recent works titled TIme Tilings. Pablo is a visual media artist who has a strong architectural background. He often uses open space for his visuals but also a space that people do occupy. He has a strong understanding of line and how it can direct the eye. With that, he can create good depth in the setting and really make a space come alive, its pretty sweet.

Assignment 1

              After viewing the articles online about contemporary art and artists, I feel like my eyes have been opened a little bit more in towards the ever-changing world of art. In the first video, they talked about how many people may be slow to grasp a sense of contemporary art because art has famously been depicting different times before us. So once we see a painting, sculpture, etc. we already carry information we know to help explain the piece. The problem with viewing contemporary art is that it can recall our own recent past as a culture or even something very current, so it may be harder to understand a certain work.

                        An example of this idea would be focusing on Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s soup cans. At the time the viewers (and I myself) did not realize that the works were more than just a pop-art representation of these cans. However when you think about the time period of the work you can pick up more information about the piece. Andy’s idea wasn’t about simple paintings of simple, common cans, but instead it was about the placement of an artwork and even what was important to the culture at a particular time. He could have been commenting about how we have become more of an industrial society now and these mass-produced items are what define us.
