when I was in high school I had a literature teacher who had a policy of unlimited extra credit. All you had to do was read a book by a notable author (his discretion) and have a little chat with him after school to prove that you read it. No limits, no need for variety (one month I decided I really loved Kurt Vonnegut and just read everything of his I could get my hands on).
Yes, I was tearing through books constantly, and talking to this teacher at least weekly. Because even though I always loved reading as a kid, literature was always a very weak subject for me in terms of a teaching-to-standardized-test school setting (I just do awful on "what color were the curtains" type multiple choice questions. Those details don't stick in my memory THEY JUST DON'T). But that didn't matter for this class. I could just read my way out of any bad test score. I have always had fond memories of how I "fudged" my way through that class and "abused' the extra credit policy.
I was thinking about it again today, and only just now realized that he absolutely tricked me into being well-read, while my teenage self thought I was totally getting away with something. THAT MOTHERFUCKER. I hope he's doing well.

Ik quite a few people are tuning into the World Cup this year, especially with it being spread across North America but I feel like I need to emphasize how big of a deal that Cabo Verde has done what it has.
Cabo Verde is the third smallest country to qualify for the World Cup (by population; 530k). Less than half the team was actually born in Cabo Verde. This is their first time ever qualifying for the WC.
FIFA World Rankings listed Cabo Verde at 67th in the world. The other members of their group are Spain (#2), Uruguay (#16), and Saudi Arabia (#61). From the beginning the expectation was that Spain and Uruguay were going to have an easy time with their group as giants of the soccer world.
Then we come to the Spain v Cabo Verde opening game. Where again it was believed that it would be an easy win. Except Cabo Verde has Vozinha; "Little Grandma" in Portuguese.
Vozinha, Josimar Jose Evora Dias, is a 40 year old goalkeeper who currently plays for a second division Portuguese league, for G.D. Chaves (which finished 10th in their league this last year). He is now the oldest goalie to have a clean sheet, complete shutout, in a World Cup game. In 3 games he has performed 2 clean sheets. Spain scored 0 goals on him. Saudi Arabia scored 0 goals on him. And Uruguay only scored 2 goals on him. 54 shots against him, 13 on target and only 2 goals conceded.
Another incredible story to come out of the assembly of this team is the story of Roberto Lopes' recruitment. He was previously a mortgage advisor in Ireland and would play amateur soccer. In 2017 he was given the chance to play professionally. While playing for that team he would be messaged on LinkedIn in Portuguese by the Head Coach of the Cabo Verdean team extending an offer to play for them, as the coach discovered Lopes' father was Cabo Verdean. Roberto ignored the message believing it was spam until months later when the coach reached out to follow up on the offer in English. It was at that point that he google translated the previous message to see the offer and accepted, he made his debut for the team in 2019.
Along with Vozinha and Lopes, there are few other standout players such as:
Steven Moreira- MLS 2024 defender of the year
Captain Ryan Mendes- Primarily plays in a second tier Turkish league; appearing in 33 out of 40 games
The entire team, all 26, have a transfer value of $63.1 million. The 18 yr old Spanish player, Lamine Yamal, is worth $232.1 million on his own.
The World Cup has always been dominated by Latin American and European teams that have incredible funding that lead them into becoming the giants that they are. Unlimited resources and people to whittle down until they have the best 26 players of the millions available to them. Some players set aside their birth countries when given the chance to play for powerhouses.
