App Review: Miss Spell's Class

As a self-proclaimed nerd and grammar enthusiast, I was enthralled, to say the least, when I discovered Miss Spell's Class in the app store. Miss Spell's Class is game in which you are given a list of words, and you must decide if it is correctly spelled or incorrectly spelled. The scoring process is based on time AND accuracy, making the game pretty challenging. I also think the font makes it a bit harder to decipher. It is graded on an A, B, C, D, F scale, and I usually only get B's. Nevertheless, it is a great way to pass time waiting in line or exercising your brain before you fall asleep at night. You can also review your answers to understand why you got then questions incorrect. Oh, and did I mention it's a FREE app? Do any of you play Miss Spell's Class? What are your thoughts?

Recently, it was announced that publishing companies Penguin and Random House will be merging, creating the largest publishing company in the world. I was uneasy about the merge at first, because Penguin publishing is my favorite. Penguin not only uses quality paper and a pure black ink, but the binding work is usually beautifully done, covers come in varieties of designs and colours, and annotations are typically detailed and helpful! I am pretty loyal to Penguin, though I do own a myriad of books from other publishers. Now, I am confident that Penguin's quality will not diminish, but I worry about a potential price increase, because Penguin's founder, Pearson Longman, aimed to make quality books affordable. Whether orange and simple, or colourful and elaborate, the sight of the little penguin on a cover or spine makes me smile!

Introducing: The Banned Book of the Week

Title: Fahrenheit 451 Author: Ray Bradbury Published: 1953 Plot in Short: Fahrenheit 451 follows the American "firefighter" whose primary job is to set fire to books. He is called Guy Montag, and he encounters book people like the quirky & intellectual Clarisse McClellan and former English professor Granger, as he begins to question the censored and thoughtless American lifestyle along with the oppressive government who outlaw books, because an ignorant people is an obedient people. Why it was banned: Some offensive language and content. Commentary: This is one of my absolute favorite books and author of all time. I adore the work of Ray Bradbury, a true master of the writer's craft. The irony in the banning of this book is beautiful; wouldn't you agree? I personally was required to read this in the ninth grade.

The Great Gatsby 2013: A Few Thoughts

I first readThe Great Gatsbywhen i was in the sixth grade, and it dominated my being for quite some time. Guys... I was Daisy Buchanan for halloween... three times. Anyway, I found out that there would be a remake starring Leonardo DiCaprio and I was enthralled, to say the least. I completely adore Leo, but it occured to me. Is he really, erm,youthfulenough to play Jay Gatsby? I know Jay was not exactly a young boy, but Leo is definitely older than Jay. I do trust DiCaprio's ability to portray a character as complex as Jay, but I think that Jay will be a challenge for Leo. After all, the shoes he has to fill are Robert Redford's. As for Carey Mulligan playing Daisy... I think she will do well, but not likely up to Mia Farrow's par. I do not like Toby Maguire as an actor at all, and I do not trust him in the role of Nick Carraway. Also, the trailer made me nervous about the music choices, because theJAZZera was instrumental to Fitzgerald's writing.

On a more optimistic note, I look forward to seeing 2013 Hollywood portray the glitzy, Gatsby-esque, Roaring Twenties!

I will be updating you on my feelings on the movie immediately following the time I see it in theaters. What areyourthoughts and concerns, Gatsby fans?
