The Blackness in my Heart

“One. Two. Three.” He said and then opened the watch releasing her real self back into her body. 

Juliet screamed and clutched her head. The memories came so fast. And then it was over. She panted and looked at him. She got up and stumbled to the door. She looked at The Doctor and quickly hugged him.

The Commander closed the watch and placed it on the bed. Then he got up and made his way to Juliet and the Doctor. Once he saw them he just stared silently.

She turned to him. “I don’t really remember you still. But I know that I should be wary. You turned. You’ve done bad things.”

“Yes, I have.” He looked to her and then looked at the Doctor. “Should I go?” he asked.

“Its not just a watch, its a container for the consciousness of….. never mind it’s not important.” He looked at the watch over once more and then held it out to her. “Are you happy the way you are?”

Juliet sniffed and thought. “I’m not happy. But I’m not sad” she answered.

“Do you want to stay like this?” He asked and sat up a bit. “Would you like to open the watch?”

She looked at the watch and wrapped her arms around herself. “I dunno.”

“Would you like me to open it?” He asked softly, the watch still in his hand. “Whatever you will remember we will help you. I promise.”

She nodded and just kept doing it, watching the device in his hand.

"I'm going to count to three and then I'm going to open the watch okay?" He said and slowly faced the watch towards her and put a finger on button to open it. "Ready?"

“You wont like your memories? Or your parents?” he asked softly. “We can’t run from our memories forever.” he said quietly to himself.

“Both” she said and sniffed. “I can if I don’t open the watch”

“You shouldn’t run. Can I see the watch, please?” he said softly and held out his hand. “Please?”

She gripped it a bit tighter before placing it in his hand. “I’m scared” she cried.

“I won’t open it. I just want to look at it.” He continued to hold his hand out and looked at her. 

She set the watch in his hand then folded her into her lap. “It’s old. Doctor smith told me it was super old.”

“I know.” He looked at the watch, flipping it around and looking at the markings. Many times he has seen these watches having one himself in his pocket. “What do you know about this watch?”

Juliet thought hard. “One doctor..,. He didn’t have a white coat. He told me I was okay and he did it to protect me. From…. Someone.” She looked at the watch. “I don’t remember much. Small things. Lights and voices. I don’t know what they are saying but I remember the sound.” She sighed. “I need to go to doctor smiths. It’s very important. You see…. I don’t know why I have to go but I’m sure it’s important. We talked about books lady time. He enjoys Agatha Christie.”

“Doctor smith? Do you know where he is?” He remembered the scars Juliet had and tried to think who would want to do something to her. “What noise did you hear?”

“Of course. His flat. Come on” he said and started to walk. “It sounds like whooshing. And…. And this odd…. Whining that goes with it”

“I know the sound. Okay.” He said and followed behind her. “Have you ever tried opening the watch?” He asked.

“Slow down Doctor. Please. I take it that the watch isn’t stuck then. So what exactly happened to her, what did she do wrong?” He asked him and walked over to one of the chairs in the flat.

“Open the watch. It’s really the only thing you can do. How bad was she?” He asked silently.

“You know gallifreyan torture…. She was human when they got her. Use your imagination” he said and sighed. “She never lets it go. She says her parents will come if she keeps it closed and… And I can’t tell her they’re dead.”

“Let me se what I can do for her.” He said and closed his eyes. “Where is her room? I’d like to talk to her again.”

He nodded to her room, pictures pasted to the door. “That’s all she does. Takes pictures. She won’t draw or paint anymore” he said. “At least not often.”

“I’m sorry.” He said and made his way to Juliets room. Slowly he opened the door and entered the room. “Juliet, I need to ask you a few questions. Is that alright?”

Juliet was sitting on her bed, looking at the watch. She nodded and set the watch down.

“I’d like you to tell me about your parents. Do you remember them?” He asked pulling the chair from her desk and sitting across from her.

Juliet shook her head. “No” she answered. “They’ll come for me. Doctor said he found find them for me”

“What if they’re gone?” He asked and closed his eyes again. “Are you afraid of opening the watch?” he asked softly.
