Day 7: Dare

Val: You know, there's something to be said about the simplicity of a classic box trap

Fitzhugh: Hmpf. More like an insult, if you ask me. Like we would fall for something so obvious for such paltry rewards!

Val: ...

Fitzhugh: ...

Val: I dare you to trip it.

-Val and Fitzhugh proceed to try to "outsmart" the box by using a secondary stick to brace it and cut the rope on the original, waltzing in so proud of themselves to grab the bait...only to fall down into the thoroughly concealed pit underneath the box*-

*24 hours earlier, in the SID headquarters*

if this wasn't already a comic i've thumbnailed out and intend to flesh out/finish, there's a part in the last chapter of the 2nd book that proves sometimes the government comes up with dumbfuck ideas to try to take out the spindrift crew, so i feel retroactively validated for coming up with it in the first place

Day 6: Pickpocket

look, sometimes your plan involves looney tunes hijinks because your usual methods don't work now that you are 6 inches tall and you can't easily steal shit like you used to

and also you have to teach your unofficial protege how to think on your feet and use what you got to get what's needed

why yes, criminal conman alexander b fitzhugh will simultaneously be a friend and bad influence to berry in this version as well, thanks for asking

this is not connected to any previous or planned new episode (yet?!) but i'm not ruling it out

Day 5: Swap

part of another proposed new episode in the series bible i've titled "vice versa" where steve and fitzhugh find themselves part of the giant world as SID inspectors and the only ones of the spindrift crew who know where/what they're really supposed to be. betty would be an SID secretary; dan and marjorie are resistance fighters/protestors; mark a junior/disgruntled government scientist; val a freshly arrested resistance arsonist; berry and chipper street orphans and stray. kobick and swan find themselves as little people, also aware of what they're really supposed to be like, and trying to figure their situation out

steve and fitz automatically go searching for the spindrift, hoping to find some answers to their predicament. they are about to find out the hard way -the hard, sharp, painful way- that kobick is ready to throw down with an improvised glass shard

eventually the piper, the one behind this whole thing, grows bored and makes them do same-sized combat instead in a thunderdome situation (this would occur within the first 1/3 or 1/2 of the second season, because the lingering feeling of swan stabbing kobick -that happens in the thunderdome- begins kobick's slow but eventul distrust of swan in the real world) ((even though no one save fitzhugh remembers what happened in the dreamscape))

Day 4: Soulmates

"there are 6 more in your group. one is a child, named berry. now why don't you make it easier on yourselves, and especially on the child, by helping me take them into protective custody now." kobick offers, looming over the detained steve and dan.

"you hear that, dan? kobick's suddenly interested in the welfare of children." steve says, leaning against the wire door of the giant hamster cage.

"could've fooled me, steve. aren't there two kids stuck down a mine shaft that could use such sympathy?" dan replies, crossing his arms and giving the SID inspector the side eye.

"sitting down there, in the cold and the dark."

"waiting for someone to help them out."

"wishing to see their parents and the sun again."

"seems the inspector doesn't care about them though."

"what a pity."

"what a shame."

"you're not helping yourselves by antagonizing me." kobick states, acid dripping on his words.

sometimes your soulmate is the bestest bud you can count on to commit to the bit and do a back-and-forth berating of a giant inspector because you know it irks the guy PLUS it helps with your eventual escape...after rescuing the giant kids, of course

Day 3: Leash

remake/update of the s1 ep21 episode "genius at work" in which chipper and fitzhugh eat size-changing pills made by a giant genius kid and both end up in trouble because of it

my version of chipper is a doberman pinscher mix and, aside from my deep seething hatred for the original chipper, this episode in particular was the main reason for a design overhaul. i wanted chipper to be distinctive/recognizable for his encounter(s) with kobick while running out and about as a giant/"normal sized" dog. kobick has encountered chipper as a tiny dog before (mainly s1 ep 19 "seven little indians"* but also, you know, in trying to capture the spindrift crew) so he would know chipper on sight (or at least second guess where he's seen that dog before, much like he does in that episode when he encounters a giant/"normal sized" steve)

*yes i intend to remake this episode as well but jesus fucking christ is it getting a different title like absolutely what the fuck late 60s television

Day 2: Stars

a scene from an episode i've titled "Star Gazing" in which steve is eager to check out The City's new planetarium and wants to sneak in before it opens officially. marjorie ends up tagging along after her outpost shift, and the two reminisce about their love/time in space (steve always wanted to pilot a space mission for NASA, marjorie was part of a NASA scientific team heading to mars that crashed on The Giant Planet a month before the spindrift did). they end up being so wrapped up in the main showroom they don't realize one of the tour guides/planetarium speakers has spotted them when she was doing last checks/practicing her spiel after hours in anticipation of the grand opening

(there would also be a scene just after steve and marjorie leave where betty confronts dan on fumbling what would've been the easiest most perfect fucking date night with steve)

((betty wants her best friends to stop being idiots and to just admit their feelings for each other))

(((steve and dan are at least super besties and i value and cherish their friendship it's so important to me but goddamn if they don't also need to kiss each other deeply on the mouth at the same time)))

Day 1: Wayward

how else would you describe starting your flight from los angeles, ca, usa expecting to land in london, england only to get sucked into a space warp and find yourself stranded on a planet full of giants?

(the giant in the green shirt is a rando dude, a combination of the bearded giant from the book series and the young dude in the tv show, so the compromise is a bearded middle aged dude instead)

it's not midnight yet where i am i can still get in on Make A Terrible Comic Day and since i'm on my Land Of The Giants bullshit i'm subjecting you to a scenario i've been working on that i think is funny

and frankly sometimes that's the only reason you need to make a comic

(the spindrift crew in my version has a ship with limited flight capability and move campsites every once in a while, and they thought they were safe up on a mountain alcove for a "vacation" only to get an endangered roommate and the SID on their ass before they can do anything more about it)

((kobick and steve are at that stage of the "relationship" where they don't want to deal with the other especially when they are actively not trying to cross the other's path for any reason aka steve wanted some time away from giants and kobick just wanted to enjoy his day off away from the office))

tfw you've been assigned to bring in the only little people alien invaders with a (semi) working spaceship alive and gather as much information about them and their ship as possible but they keep inexplicably escaping every time you manage to catch them but they also break into your office through the vents to borrow your phone or tell you about crimes that need solving or to set something on fire and you have other cases on your desk that need your attention why won't they leave you alone you have paperwork to finish and is it too early to retire yet

you know i've always sympathized with the whole "throwing The Character into the torment nexus" posts going around tumblr but it didn't really hit me until i started my Land of the Giant deep-dive/series bible project and realized if i inflict the main cast upon Inspector Dobbs Kobick (their antagonist) enough times, the man was sure to get an aneurysm or or a hernia or an ulcer or just plain snap like a twig from the stress. there's a reason he shows up more often in my proposed series than he did in the original series (only 8 episodes, which is a damn shame)

for my version of kobick, i'm sticking closer to his original actor/design because 1. kevin hagen was a pretty good actor and endeared me to this character and B. it was A Look and who am i to think i could improve on perfection? minor differences include hairstyle/color, glasses frames, and his pocket watch chain, but it's still the recognizable original outfit for the most part

kobick never took off his suit jacket on the show, but i spent time on this fucking waistcoat so you're going to see it goddamnit

also a quick recreation of what i've dubbed the Fuck Ass Shit Suit from kobick's final appearance on the show because god fuck it was such a fucking downgrade what the absolute fuck was going on here. where the hell are his glasses? they even gave him a fucking wristwatch! disgusting.

he's seen every disney movie at least 20x, wants to try shuffleboard, and has recently discovered he's into foot stuff

there are at least like

a solid 5 of them that keep telling me "do a comic so people can see what you see about this"

and i have to keep reminding myself "drawing out only parts of potential episodes and not the whole thing means there's a shit ton of context they will be missing out on and if you try to provide said context in a timely manner your ass is going to falter and burn out again before it's complete"

but hey

at least it has been stirring the creative juices again

look sometimes you spend too much time on a comic because YOU think it's funny and that's all that matters

i promise my Land of the Giant series bible/reboot version of valerie isn't a pyromaniac but she does have to live up to her stage name of "himeramera" some how

it also doesn't help that a lot of the series' solutions to a problem was "set something on fire"

tfw when you start playing out a scenario for an episode that doesn't/will never exist in your head because you decided to finally try to create a reboot/remake Land of the Giants series bible and it won't leave you alone so you try to recreate the tone of the "episode"

in which inspector kobick (the big guy) has meant to have lured in the entire spindrift crew and ship but only managed to trap captain steve burton (little guy) into a shipping container, which is fine by him because one little person/human is better than none

"stalemate" is the tentative name for what i call the "blatant excuse for a bottle episode" episode, where the primary focus is kobick and steve in a shipping container with limited light, space, and almost no cover for steve. which was the point, kobick has been planning this for a long time and will drag it out as long as he can

it would be atmospheric as fuck, let's just say. if you could see it as it is in my head, you'd get it. and here is but a small piece of it

is it worse there's another bit i'm also trying to work on that involves even worse attempts at perspective than this? but would also be made into a gif if i can do it right?

i've started a marathon that delves deeper than the usual marathon posts i do because it's part of a Land of the Giants remake/reboot/reimagining series bible i've been putting off for awhile

and now that i'm doing so i'm already imagining scenarios

and those scenarios need faces (at least)

will probs get to full designs sometime down the line but i'm trying not to put the cart before the horse

there are two faces/name you may not recognize on here if you've watched the show before (well you may have recognized the second name, kinda)

marjorie is a character from the book series that the crew rescue and add to the team. i'll have to reread the books sometime down the line (as they also have stuff to mine for a proposed new series). in my remake she is the last surviving crew member of her exploration team, being her team's entomologist, and would have been captured by a random giant for at least a month before the spindrift crew crosses their path. she/they pronouns, identifies as two-spirit

inspector swan was a 30 second character in the beginning of an episode and dies so...not much of a presence. literally just lifted his surname because i needed something. thadrick is something i came up with because that just sounds like something an asshole would be named. anyway. in my version he's a lower-ranked but ladder climbing inspector that is partnered with kobick later in the series. charming on the outside, ruthless on the inside, is willing to do whatever it takes to end the "little people invasion".

the only "crew member" not featured is chipper. not because he doesn't exist DESPITE MY HATRED FOR THE OG VERSION but because i can't decide on what dog breed he should be. my heart says pitbull, but i'm shopping around before i commit. just not any annoying little shits like the og chipper was.
