itās already established that gabi is use to moving around the country even before she turned 17. therefore giving her the mindset to never get attached to the next place her mom is transferred. but somehow, it changed when she moved to albuquerque and met troy.
no one but troy was able to let her feel like she belonged at east high (and yes taylor isnāt included but thatās for another time). troy showed her the one place that brought him peace. bringing their relationship closer than the rest of their friends. this is also the place where gabi made happy memories with troy. she told troy about her dad (which probably is a sensitive topic because she never mentioned him before) at the rooftop garden. sheās slowly getting attached to the place.
then she finally was able to stay in albuquerque longer than she expected. the longer she stays in albuquerque, the more attached she is to the place. hence why itāll bring pain to her in the future.
when she applied for stanfordās freshman honors program, she was set on the future earlier than the rest of her class. which the mindset she got from moving around because it always got her thinking what will happen next. then she got accepted to stanford. troy was so happy for her but the only thing she could think about is the distance from stanford to albuquerque. and sheās been talking about stanford with her mom for so long yet when she finally got it her mind is out of it.
because of troy being so happy for her about stanford, she hesitates on telling troy about her honors program. because she knew he wouldnāt take a no for answer and encourage her to take the chance. so if troy, the first person who made her feel like she belonged there, pushes her to take the program is the final step for her to really go for it. why stay when the person who made you feel attach to the place you call home is encouraging you to leave for the sake of your benefit?
it didnāt matter to her if anyone else knew. as long as troy doesnāt because she doesnāt want to leave him. it gets complicated after that.
if gabi leaves albuquerque for college, she aint coming back. this traces back to her always moving around and never coming back to any of those places. she got so used to leaving she never looks back because it brings her pain to know sheāll never come back to it. which is why she didnāt return to albuquerque for prom despite her and troy planning for it.
she says āi donāt think i can do it, troyā on the phone her voice already on the urge of breaking. breaking down what she said, her saying she doesnāt think mean she tried her best to really return to albuquerque. she has already settled in california.
what troy planned for gabi is to return for prom then leave then return for graduation then only to leave again and not go back anymore. to gabi, itās like getting stab in the heart multiple times. to troy it might be easy but to gabi itās breaking her.
because really. imagine if she did go back. she went to prom. she might enjoy it but itāll add to the memory pile that sheāll never come back to. keep in mind gabi was thinking that troy would attend U of A so her coming back is like a slap to the fact that oh they didnāt leave and theyāre not going to worry about it.
which is why she told troy that she needed to stay in wherever she was. thatās already self explanatory. she needs to stay what place sheās in to keep her from remembering the place she has gotten so attached and the friends she left. she even apologizes for it knowing it would hurt troy as well.
so in conclusion, her constant moving around really affected her whole self and it really shows.
