Dark academia tumblr users will look at F Scott Fitzgerald's highly insufferable behaviour and be inspired by it in the name of 'carpeing the diem'.
important question. do you think the minotaur had a soft wet nose. do you think he mooed when he snored. do you think when theseus turned a sword on him he looked up at his executioner with the same dark, beautiful eyes that earned hera the epithet Βοῶπις
— Sylvia Plath, The Unabridged Journals
sorry for the inactivity i am in my 'going unhinged over assignments that definitely do not need this level of research to them' era. in my 'sleeping for 2 hours, waking up in a panic about my writing not being flawless and perfect enough' era.

alice!
I was beading a neckless of fragmented pearls of my identity. once completed i realised not all of the pearls seemed to be of my own design.

Day 10/100: Old friend, philosophy & mentorship ☕
My friend from my hometown came to Dublin! We met for coffee and went to the record shops around the city centre. Surreal! Never thought I'd see her in this part of my life.
I then worked on my philosophy essay (finally) which is due Monday, critically assessing Hume's philosophy on the immortality of the soul. I'll have to work on that in the upcoming days.
Then went to complete my student mentorship training... it was so interesting but so long (4 hours...). I did like it a lot, can't wait to help new students find a way around campus! It seems like a fulfilling job. ❤️
My outfit today was so fab! Wore red lipstick for the first time in ages and LOVED IT. Might do it daily from now on... or at least whenever I remember to.
Today's stats:
🎧 - Shirley Bassey - [Where Do I Begin] Love Story
📖 - R. F. Kuang: The Dragon Republic / Jonathan Lethem: Motherless Brooklyn
Daily weather: ⛅️ FINALLY some improvement!
(no images today, sadly)
Day 9/100: Course party! ⭐️
My coursemates and I had a little party today! It was a lot of fun, we played truth or dare and charades, and just got to know each other more.
I felt very weird today so couldn't get much work done. It felt as if the sun dug into my skull through the clouds, and everything was swimming and claustrophobic. I had some salted popcorn and it went away, but what a scare! Went home after uni and took a nap, which was soooo good. Then went to the party. Not much to report, really. Sometimes days are like that. :)
Today's stats:
🎧 - Cults - Gilded Lily
📖 - R. F. Kuang: The Dragon Republic / Jonathan Lethem: Motherless Brooklyn
Daily weather: 🌧 so, so, cold. Had-to-sleep-with-woollen-socks-on level cold.
Day 8/100: Getting Back into Reading! 📖
I've been having a hard time finishing books for pleasure lately... I start so many and drop them all in disinterest. Bought a copy of Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem today, which inspired the eponymous film that I appreciate a lot.
I quickly found out that the book is completely different from the movie, only containing characters with the same name (and yet not all of them!). It is more of a character study of the protagonist Lionel Essrog, written from his perspective. I deeply enjoy it nonetheless! Read about a third in one sitting, which is impressive considering the slump I found myself in lately. Here's to hope for more productive reading, I have so many books I cannot wait to get to.
Academically, I got my plan for the Buddhism essay approved, and can now work towards writing the meat of the thing!
Today's stats:
🎧 - Sufjan Stevens - Fourth of July
📖 - R. F. Kuang: The Dragon Republic / Jonathan Lethem: Motherless Brooklyn
Daily weather: 🌧 rain but in a miserable way.

Day 7/100: Buddhism Essay Plan 🪷
Worked on my essay plan for my class on Buddhism -- figured that I'd rather present a simple outline before jumping into the thick of it in case I misinterpreted the essay question (it is very broad). This way I minimise the amount of work I'll have to do in case I got it wrong. I'm comparing and contrasting the 'Discourse on the Noble Quest' from the Theravada Buddhist Pali Canon and angel williams' 'Being Black', chapter 1, 'Four Simple Truths'. Interesting how the texts collide despite their completely different contexts!
Tomorrow is the begining of my last week (or three days) of lectures for the year. Time is surreal... feels like I've just started college and now I'm nearly done with my first year. Wow!
My first post of this challenge mildly blew up. I wonder why!
Today's stats:
🎧 - Lana Del Rey - Taco Truck x VB
📖 - R. F. Kuang: The Dragon Republic
Daily weather: 🌦 half sun, half rain... how Irish.
My dog's name's (Dominus Deus,) Rex (Coelestis)
Every day I wake up angry that I have to talk about the holy trinity again. not that i don't like to talk about the holy trinity. but why is all of the theology I'm taught so profoundly Christian? how can you, as an institution, claim religious diversity within your faculty when the said diversity only comes in the form of 'supersessionism bad respect Jew'. give me Joy Ladin. give me Géza Vermes. even Paul the Apostle will do. i am so tired of hearing about Anselm of Canterbury and Gregory of Nyssa for the 30th time in a row. I am so tired of going through the same exact lecture plan for the 12th week. why am I only learning about the Christian imagination of angels in teaspoons. ffs.
you told me the Shema Yisrael has some profound Christian ecclesiastic significance and didn't even explain its original purpose. how can i take you seriously?
why is your course named 'introducing theology' as if it comprehends all theology? why not call it 'introducing CHRISTIAN theology'. sometimes being misleading can do harm. particularly when half of your talking points, are, in fact, not even Christian.
HUGE shout out to purple for being the only color that has like no losers. Deep purple royal purple bluish purple redish purple pastel purple dusty purple lavender periwinkle violet like. Banger after banger after banger!!

Day 6/100: Break ❤️
Took a break today, no work was done. I'll start again tomorrow. I just really needed that. I Rewatched Motherless Brooklyn (excuse the mess in the first pic) and The Smurfs. Both are set in New York! They both reminded me of past times in my life, particularly the former film... I miss 2019, I miss the place where I first watched it, and though so much has happened since, that first time I saw the film is likely in the top 10 days of my life. A sad smile illuminates my face as I think about it. 🦢
Decided I want to dye my hair black and get a 1920s French bob (just like the one in the second image). It just looks amazing. I feel like I'm being drawn towards noir and jazz tones more and more, which, luckily, are so compatible with dark academia looks!
Today's stats:
🎧 - Thom Yorke & Flea - Daily Battles
📖 - R. F. Kuang: The Dragon Republic.
Daily weather: ⛅️ Cloudy but it's okay because I'm sick so no sun FOMO.

Day 5/100: Sickday Holiday? 😭
Yup. I think I've caught a cold. I'm treating it as a bit of a forced book-reading break though, and I'm very glad I live alone now so nobody fusses over me (I hate that).
I did get out of the house in the morning though. Went to Oxfam to get the shirt they were taking out of the display today (fig 1), also got a dress, another shirt and a bunch of books (fig 2). Then I went back home, slept, read Man's Search For Meaning (I believe I'll finish it tonight) and 'worked' on my essay (copied lecture notes onto an online document -- I write them by hand).
Hoping the cold passes me quickly because man is this going to be a busy week.
Today's stats:
🎧 - Lindsey Stirling - Roundtable Rival
📖 - Viktor E. Frankl: Man's Search For Meaning / R. F. Kuang: The Dragon Republic.
Daily weather: ⛅️ Fluctuating but also cosy.
(PS: the list of tags is gigantic and absurd but I am trying so hard to find like-minded individuals on the hellsite so bear with me!)
Day 4/100: Holy Friday + Seder 🏹
I began my day by singing an Ecumenical Good Friday Service in my university's chapel... some genuinely gorgeous and haunting music. I adore festive services for how moving they usually are.
Later, I (late) celebrated Seder with my friends, and spent time with them next to the canal. I am enamoured by the weather these days, I hope it lasts in all of its splendour.
Thought I had a bad bout of hay fever, turns out I've just likely caught something nasty. I do hope whatever it is, it doesn't disrupt my life too much...
Today's stats:
🎧 - John Sanders: The Reproaches
📖 - Viktor E. Frankl: Man's Search For Meaning / R. F. Kuang: The Dragon Republic.
Daily weather: ☀️ Deceptively warm...
