All the republican senate candidate has to do at this point is make a few tokenistic overtures to Black and Jewish Michiganders, it won't be genuine, Most Blacks and Jews won't fall for it, and it will likely only net a few to cross the party line, but it doesn't need to get them in droves, it just needs to get enough to come over or decide "it won't be so bad if I just vote for neither", because every person voting for the republican or not voting at all is a vote lost for sayed

Just like he put out a campaign ad with him in a Black barbershop to show he's totally cool with Black people. But it's pretty much too little too late, you don't do this *after* the primary, you obviously look insincere here. He's going to have to do a lot more than this to make up for that ugly primary.

The thing people don't get is that, percentage-wise, most Black people who vote in the general will vote for him, and it's probably still going to be true of Jewish voters, too. But turnout is going to be depressed, unless AES puts in some real work.

AES' base is rich white people, a bloc that votes majority Republican. Without at least Black voters, or barring a super low Republican turnout, he going to lose.

In case you weren't aware, the goal of a boycott is to significantly impact the bottom line of a business to pressure it into stopping some specific harmful behavior.

This means that a disorganized "don't support this" with no clear timeframe, no clear demand being put forward, and no organized effort to reach the actual customers of the business... is pretty unlikely to achieve anything.

"Boycotts never achieve anything" factoid is actually a statistical error. Historically, boycotts have been an enormously successful pressure mechanism for collective action. Boycotts georg, a social media user who launches a million poorly strategized boycotts every day with no thought given to target selection or actionable demands, is an outlier adn should not have been counted.

During the holocaust some estimates say that over 50% of the entire European population of Roma people were murdered.

They were also forced to be identified in camps with the brown upside down triangle

They were considered racially impure, much like the Jews. In many nations they were hunted by their fellow countrymen, who had an existing bias against them that was fuelled by war propaganda. The Einsatzgruppen (basically a moving, mobile killing squad) had Roma as a target. And, yes, there was a "Gypsy Question".

Their population was absolutely decimated. But worse.

August 2 is a date that some acknowledge this genocide. Some other dates....some not any dates at all. This date was chosen because of the huge killings on that night of those in the Zigeunerfamilienlager. Roma families were kept together in a camp in Auschwitz.

The Nazis decided to "clear" most of the camp that night, killing many children and elderly on purpose. There was a lot of fighting, they fought back with improvised weapons. Let no one ever say that they walked wearily to their deaths. They fought for themselves and their families with every ounce of strength they had.

Thousands were killed in gas chambers that night, the women, children, elderly and infirm. The rest were sent to work camps.

Germany only officially acknowledged this aspect of the holocaust in the early 80s. In the Former Czechoslovakia and Czech Republic Roma women were forced into sterilisation through a number of means, in the 70s, the 90s and into the 00's, with some reports that this is still ongoing.

The Roma are not a footnote in history. Their suffering was immeasurable, like so many others. In ways that some places will still not acknowledge or account for.

May the memories of those gone be a blessing, and the future of those that remain be a brighter and more hopeful one.

It's even worse, in some ways because even "official" memorials of the Holocaust often argue against our own traditions of remembrance.

On the 16th of May in 1944, the guards attempted to "liquidate" the Roma Family Camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau, ie to murder everyone held prisoner there. And, we fought back, with planks and hammers and bare hands, until the guards gave up and left. Although the majority of the camp were murdered within months of this event, that act of resistance in such a hopeless situation has become a pillar of remembrance and pride.

And, even "official" memorials of the Holocaust argue about it, they hedge and priss and cite the Nazis' own records for "why it can't have happened like that", even though we have stories passed down from survivors and from other prisoners who witnessed it. The suspicion of Gypsies is so bad, we are so much mistrusted as narrators of our own history, that people would rather take the word of the literal Nazi party, over our word.

Mamdani put together a panel of 18 lawyers that was bs supposed to “represent the demographics of the city” and put no Jews on it. Jews are 10% of the city’s population. Jews are overrepresented in the legal field as it is. In NYC we’re probably at least 25% but I’ve not found hard numbers from any reliable source. If we’re 23% of the field in NYC, the odds of this happening is less than 1%. The legal standard of “beyond a reasonable doubt” is 95-99% sure. We hit less than 5% if Jews are only 16% of NYC lawyers.

EDIT: @strangesmallbard has been helping me find some numbers on this. For some reason there’s very little data, but according to this paper, which cites an earlier source, over 60% of NYC bar members were Jewish in the mid 60s. The Jewish population of NYC at that time, was probably somewhere around 20% (extrapolating from numbers given by wikipedia, not exact). The Jewish population is presently around 10% of the city. Even accounting for the fact that, these days, probably a smaller percent of Jews become lawyers than did 60 years ago there’s no fucking way it’s fallen under 25% of lawyers in NYC are Jewish. No chance. This is fucking hiring discrimination.

Dude it's been four weeks and Venezuelans are still looking for their friends and family under rubble. Four weeks.

Ftr, Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Project HOPE, and World Central Kitchen are still actively helping survivors; those links are to their respective donation pages fyi. A lot of other NGOs have gone home. I'd strongly suggest donating to MSF specifically because the healthcare and sanitation infrastructure in the affected areas is basically decimated and disease is a very real danger.
