Asking Too Much
I want you to tell me about every person youâve ever been in love with. Tell me why you loved them, then tell me why they loved you. Tell me about a day in your life you wouldnât think youâd live through. Tell me what the word home means to you And tell me in a way that Iâll know your motherâs name just by the way you describe your bedroom when you were 8. See, I wanna know the first time you felt the weight of hate and if that day still trembles beneath your bones. Do you prefer to play in puddles of rain or bounce in bellies of snow? And if you were to build a snowman, would you rip two branches from a tree to build your snowman arms? Or would you leave your snowman armless for the sake of being harmless to the tree? And if you would, would you notice how the tree weeps for you because your snowman has no arms to hug you every time you kiss him on the cheek? Do you kiss your friends on the cheek? Do you sleep besides them when theyâre sad, even if that makes your lover mad? Do you think that anger is a sincere emotion or just the timid motion of a fragile heart trying to beat away its pain? See, I wanna know what you think of your first name. And if you often lie awake at night and imagine your motherâs joy when she spoke it for the very first time. I want you to tell me all the ways youâve been unkind. Tell me all the ways youâve been cruel. Tell me- knowing that I often picture Gandhi at ten years old beating up little boys at school. If you were walking by a chemical plant, where smoke stacks were filling the sky with dark, black clouds, would you holler, âPoison! Poison! Poison!â really loud or would you whisper, âThat cloud looks like a fish, and that cloud looks like a fairyâ? Do you believe that Mary was really a virgin? Do you believe that Moses really parted the sea? And if you donât believe in miracles, how would you explain the miracle of my life to me? See, I wanna know if you believe in any god, or if you believe in many gods. Or better yet, what gods believe in you. And for all the times youâve knelt before the temple of yourself, have the prayers youâve asked come true? And if they didnât did you feel denied? And if you felt denied, denied by who[m]? I wanna know what you see when you look in the mirror on a day youâre feeling good. I wanna know what you see in the mirror on a day youâre feeling bad. I wanna know the first person who ever taught you your beauty could ever be reflected on a piece of lousy glass. If you ever reach enlightenment, would you remember how to laugh? Have you ever been a song? Would you think less of me if I told you I have lived my entire life a little off key and Iâm not nearly as smart as my poetry I just plagiarized the thoughts of the people around me who have learned the wisdom of silence. Do you believe that concrete perpetuates violence? And if you do I want you to tell me of a meadow where my skateboard will soar. See I wanna know more that what you do for a living. I wanna know how much of your life you spend just giving. And if you love yourself enough to also receive sometimes. I wanna know if you bleed sometimes through other peopleâs wounds. And if you dream sometimes that this life is just a balloon that if you wanted you could pop â but you never would because youâd never want it to stop. If a tree fell in the forest, and you were the only one there to hear it, if itâs fall to the ground didnât make a sound, would you panic in fear that you didnât exist or would you just bask in the bliss of your nothingness? And lastly, let me ask you this: if you and I went for a walk, and the entire walk we didnât talk, do you think that eventually weâd kiss? No way. Thatâs askinâ too much â after all, this is only our first date.
An Insider's Guide on How to Be Sick
An Insider's Guide on How to Be Sick
Never say the words âthis is not my lifeâ This pain that wakes you screaming in the muzzle of the night That woke your lover, chased into another room into another life This fevered fainting This tremoring chest These lungs like a mangle kite This panic like a cave of bats This nurse drawing blood wearing doubled gloves This insurance doesnât cover that This hurried paycheck of doctor after doctor after doctor This stethoscope that never hears your heart This hospital bed This florescent dark This save your prescription with side effects worse than the disease This please let me have one month where I read more poems than warning labels This not knowing what the test will say This pray pray pray This airplaneâs medical emergency landing Shame when you canât walk Shame when youâre home alone sobbing on another friday night Say âThis is my life This is my precious life This is how badly I want to liveâ Say Sometimes you have to keep pulling yourself up by the whip Take punch after punch to the face forward To the head up And still uncurl the fist of your grief like a warm blanket on the cool earth of your faith Say every waiting room is the kiln where you will finally take shape to fit into the keyhole of your own gritty heart To open mercy To open your siren throat Say every fever is a love note to remind you that there better things to be than cool Fuck cool Fuck every pair of skinny jeans From the month your muscles atrophied to a size two Say fuck you to anyone who asks you if you eat enough Say how do you not know that is so fucking rude Remember you never have an obligation to fight the hurricane in your chest Especially on a day when another healthy person suggests âyou would feel so much better if you would just focus your breath into a Buddha beam of light' Like that blind is going to miraculously dissolve the knife thatâs been churning in your kidneys for the last six fucking months Say Sunshine, please go back to your job at the aroma therapy aisle at Whole Foods and leave me alone I know how to help my body God does not expect me to use my inside voice God knows how goddamn hard I am working to become a smooth stone So I can skip on my back across this red red sea So I can trust deep in my screaming bones Everything is a lesson Lesson #1 through infinity You will never have a greater opportunity to learn to love your enemy than when your enemy is your own red blood A truce is a word made of velvet Truce is a word made of velvet Wear it everywhere you go Bandage the window where you screamed at the mountain for forgetting your footsteps Trust that mountain is climbing you Especially on the days you inevitably want to avalanche everyone who loves you When you canât walk from the bed to the bathroom without clenching at the walls When you canât imagine you can fall to pieces in anotherâs sturdy arms and still be seen as whole Remember, the universe only became the universe when it shattered into dust And that shattering is the one thing you can always trust enough to tell you the truth is so quiet you may never have heard it without a stethoscope pressed to your chest That is to say in the house of your compassion its possible illness will be the landline And its how you will begin to hear the world clear as a pin dropping The downpour of its eyes The long quarter of its broken throat On my most broken days when my faith is a willow and the pain has nothing but an ax to give The only thing I want than to die is to live Is to live to hear my neighbor play his music obnoxiously loud To get cut off in traffic fifty more times To get broken up with while standing in line at the DMV To have another doctor drive another needle into my skin for the hundredth time So I can say, for the hundredth time, that needle is the needle on a record player, Doctor, everything and I mean everything can learn how to sing

Panic Button Collector-Andrea Gibson
I check my Facebook page 36 times a day for the sole purpose of making sure I have not accidentally posted a nude photo of myself
I reread an email 13 times before pressing send to ensure I have not written something in the email that could convict me of a crime
Before taking a stage when asked if I allow flash photography I always want to say âNoâ because Iâm terrified flash photography will give me epilepsy I know it doesnât work like that, still
I never eat nuts on an airplane out of fear of that I will suddenly develop a nut allergy and if I have to asphyxiate I donât want it to happen at 30,000 feet
Twice in the last two years Iâve been aborted from an airplane for running screaming down the aisles as the plane was taking off
I canât walk through San Francisco without worrying my indigestion is the beginning of an earthquake
I brace for tsunamis besides lakes in Colorado Iâm not joking The last time I saw Niagara Falls I couldnât take it It was too much much I had to plug my ears to look at it and close my eyes to listen Generally I canât do all my senses at the same time they are too much much
Like if you touch me without warning, whoever you are, it will take everything I have to not hate you
Imagine your hands are electrical sockets and I am constantly aware that I am 99% water itâs not that Iâve not tried to build a dam
Ask my therapist who pays her mortgage My cost of living went up at five years old when I told my mother I have to stop going to birthday parties because every time I hear a balloon pop I feel like Iâm gonna get murdered in the heart
Last year a balloon popped on the stage where I was performing, I started crying in front of the whole crowd plugged my ears and kept repeating the word âLOUD LOUD LOUDâ it was super sexy
Thatâs what I do I do super sexy
Like when I asked the super cute barista 11 times âyou sure this is decaffeinated? Are you sure this is decaffeinated? Are you sure that- yes I drink decaffeinated and still jitter like a bug running from the bright bright bright
I have spent years of my life wearing a tight rubber band hidden beneath my hair so my brain could have a hug
These days when no oneâs looking I wear a fuzzy fitted winter hat that buttons tight beneath the chin
I only ever wear a tie so that when I convince myself Iâm choking my senses have something they are certain they can blame
As a kid I was so certain I would die the way of meteor falling on my head I would go whole weeks without looking at the sky âcause I didnât want to witness the coming of my own death
I started tapping the kitchen sink seven times to build a shield
My mother started making lists of everything I thought would kill me in hopes that if I saw my fears they would disappear Bless her heart but the first time I saw that list I started filling a salad bowl with bleach and soaking my shoe laces overnight so in the morning when I ironed them they would be so bright I would be certain I had control over how much dark could break into my light how much jack hammer could break into my heart My spine, it has always been a lasso that could never catch my breath
I honestly canât imagine how it would feel to walk into a room full of people and not feel the roof collapsing on my âNO NO NO I am not fineâ Fine is the suckiest word it never tells the truth And more than anything I have ever been afraid of I am terrified of lies How they war the world How they sound by our tongues How they bone dry the marrow How they never out-llow the inside
How did we get through high school without being taught Dr. King spent two decades having panic attacks? Avoided Windows Jumped at thunder
I think we are all part flight the fight part run for your life Part âplease please please like meâ Part Canât breathe Part scared to say youâre scared Part say it anyway
You panic button collector You clock of beautiful ticks You run out the door if you need to You flock to the front row of your own class You feather everything until you know you can always, always shake like a leaf on my family tree and know you belong here You belong here and everything you feel is okay, Everything you feel is okay
A letter to my dog, exploring the human condition
A letter to my dog, exploring the human condition-Andrea Gibson
Dear squashÂ
Aka squashy
Aka squishyÂ
Aka squasharooni GibsonÂ
Aka squish squash and you donât stop
Aka miracle buttonÂ
Aka little perfect peanut
Aka my beating heart with fur and legsÂ
I know you think itâs insane that I still poop in the houseÂ
That I choose to wear underwear and pants giving no one the opportunity to smell my true dispositionÂ
That on the days I need to feel better about myself I donât just pee on someoneâs pee
Donât worry. I am not fooled by my thumbsÂ
I know I am not the tadpoleâs final projectÂ
I know I am not the last species evolution hopes to becomeÂ
I canât even swallow my own pride long enough to let myself drool when something smells delicious
What must you think of my mirror faceÂ
Or how much of my day I spend practicing my butch voiceÂ
My baby-Iâll-fix-your-carburetor-with-my-tool-kit voice when you know full well there is nothing in my tool kit besides a massive collection of self help books that have helped me do nothing but feng shui the skeletons in my closetÂ
Donât you just love how that femur accents the sofa set, squash
Iâm sorry I cry every time I take you to the vetÂ
Iâm sorry they take your temperature like thatÂ
Iâm sorry I take you there when youâve only got a bug biteÂ
Humans hold so tight to the leash of life but you will roll in anything dead and wear it like perfumeÂ
I wish I had your nose for eternity
I wish I could see what you seeÂ
Where the squirrels satan your eyes
Where the postman deserves to die even when heâs not bringing billsÂ
Whatâs with hating the shadow the peace lily makes on the floor in the living room?Â
I know I let you down everyday I choose not to murder the vacuum
Is it bad that I refuse to teach you to not be afraid of menÂ
Is it bad that I want you to keep your bite and your snarl and your gleaming teethÂ
Is it bad that when they call you a risk, I call you a feministÂ
You never make fun of your friend Chloeâs underbiteÂ
Or your friend Willowâs limp
Or your friend Harveyâs past trouble with the law
You never criticize me for being too uptight to let my hair down even though you can let yours all the way out
All over my black hoody, my black pants, the couch, the car, the chair, the online merch store that sells my books and tee-shirts wrote me a letter saying âwe canât continue to sell your products if they continue to be covered in so much of your dogâs hair"Â
I just assumed anything covered in you would increase in value
Remember when I told that woman I loved her and whispered in your ear âyouâre my number one girl" itâs true
If I could I would put your beating heart in my mouth and suck on it like a piece of candy so I could finally understand how you got so sweet
I know my therapist likes you more than she likes meÂ
And I still let you sleep on her couch
You taught me a good nap is the best therapyÂ
You taught me to sit when I damn well want to sitÂ
I donât care that you never talk about capitalism or patriarchy or the heteronormative hegemonic  paradigmÂ
I know youâre saving the world every time you get poo stuck in your butt hair and you donât go looking for someone to blame Â
Speaking of looking for someoneÂ
I canât imagine what you think of sexÂ
I canât tell if you think itâs a slobbering badly boundaried belly rub or a poorly aimed fist fight
You just perch on the end of the bed and tilt your head back and forth
Wondering why I still havenât taken my pants off
I have issues, SquashÂ
Humans have issuesÂ
We dig holes to bury our own heartsÂ
We chew on our own bonesÂ
We escape the predators but still canât shake them off
Some of us wear our own bodies the way your friend Berlin wore that cone around her head, remember?
So embarrassed, but I never had a better teacher at uncaging my own spirit than youÂ
Never had a reason to stop playing dead until the day I saw your little face at the shelterÂ
Your little nose pressed against the cold glass, staring up at me like I was a gay Noahâs arkÂ
My heart
My heartÂ
My heart
Every time I give you a treat, you run around the house looking for a place to hide it until you finally come to where I am sitting and hide it directly under me
The most important thing I have ever built in my whole life is your trust
May you always feel entitled to more than your fair share of the bedÂ
May you always tear the stuffing out of every toy I give youÂ
So I can constantly be reminded to keep spilling my gutsÂ
To keep saying IÂ donât know how I will ever make peace with the shortness of your life spanÂ
But I promise to make sure you know you are so loved every second you are hereÂ
You know my hands will build the sturdiest ark they possibly canÂ
To hold your holy howl and your holy bark and your holy begÂ

Leprechaun-Andrea Gibson
Leprechaun-Andrea Gibson
My penis was an awkward leprechaun that had not gotten lucky nearly as much as it had gotten bored standing patiently in my pants while the rest of me read self-help books on how to look sexy in green until the day I met your mouth, a St. Patrickâs Day parade, your tongue, a float you kept throwing candy from. You made me so hot the first time you touched me I burned down a Christmas tree, put the star on top of the four-leaf clover I had built from two three-leaf clovers and some crazy glue. I am crazy about you, and not because of your personality. Everybody has a personality.
You have an ass that makes me want to objectify you in my feminist theory class. And yes, professor, I do think that statement deserves an A+ if only for the way it fucks the confession booth, thrusts its brothel into the Baptist of my youth. At eleven-years-old I told my mother "There is something wrong with my body. My underwear are constantly full of pee." "Are you sure itâs pee?" she asked. I said "What else could it be?" But I knew it was Satan with his evil snakes poking around my holy. It was my jackrabbit Elvis pelvis making friends with the living room pillows. My mother said. "What did you do to all the pillows? They have no fluff left." I did not confess I had ruffled their feathers, I had buried my hump in their soft. I did not say, âMother, if Mary was really a virgin are you sure we can trust she was ever touched by the hand of god?" I tell my lover, there is a Bible on my bookshelf I need you to smack me with. Cause there is an anchor I am still pulling up to free all the parts of myself still floating on Noahâs Ark. Right between the zebras and the penguins my kink side is curled up in a ball, biting its claws, begging the rain to stop. You should never trust a ship that wonât let you get off. Never let your leprechaun wear a cross to the parade in your pants. But the moral of the story? Never ever ever ever fuck the pillows on your motherâs living room couch. Fuck the pillows in your own bedroom âtil you find someone with feathers in her hair and a Christmas tree burning in her holy, unholy mouth.

Alaska Says Sun-Andrea Gibson
Alaska Says Sun-Andrea Gibson
It was such a rare occasion my father took out a $2 ad space in the local paper and posted the news. The headline read âHoly Cow! Shirley Gibson Got New Shoes.â My mother could have killed him. Said ânow everywhere I go people gonna be staring at my feet and yâall know small town folks will talkâ. But a hummingbirdâs wings beat eighty times a second and if you think thatâs fast youâve never seen my mother walk.
Nothing could hold those feet back. Not even headline news of that first pair of shoes she could afford in eight years. My mother looked at long dirt roads and avenues the way poets look at microphones. This is where God grows and I was right beside her. On my banana-seat bicycle, December icicles or August sun, my mom was walking. And walking meant talking and talking meant âAndrea when I was young I thought every star in the sky was a starfish that swam all the way up to the night, took one last breath, set itself on fire and fell, just so I could make a wish. Life isnât like that, itâs like this: Hard as the concrete beneath your feet sometimes, but you keep on walking block by block, mile by mile, cause every aisle in the store is empty but the sky is never out of stock when it comes to things to live for. Look what the sun just bought the moon, a brand-new yellow dress, letâs go ask her to dance before she sobers up.â
Her cup was always half full then cause even when it wasnât my mother walked like it would be and talked like it already was. âSure the grass is greener on the other side but what the hell are we gonna do with green grass besides rot in the goddamn pesticides. Grow deep belly laughs. Grow your grandmotherâs clean conscience. Grow that dream you had at five years old the first time a pencil callused your kindergarten fingers. You ran all the way home screaming âLook Mom! Iâm a writer! My hand is changing shape to prove that Iâm a writerâ. Grow that, in every crack of pavement the soles of your feet can find.
On the day you were born I said daughter like Alaska says sun. Said âIâve been waiting so long for you to come. Now go show those starfish how to shine.â Iâm no pacifist. If I couldâve, I would have killed time. Stopped it dead in its tracks but it moves too quickly, it escapes to the corners of your mind and calls itself the past.
The last time my mother fell down, body still sprawled on the floor, like a rag doll she called my name like âdonât you cry. You think the rainâs ashamed to fall? Something grows every time I hit the ground and Iâll climb up those pitying stairsâ. In a year, my mother will trade her walking shoes for a wheelchair which she says will keep her looking up but I know sheâs scared. So Iâll wear black to the funeral of my tears and white to the wedding of who I am and the ways I want to grow to make her proud.
And Mom, you should know, Iâve been writing steady now for seven years now and not once have I ever written a poem sitting down. I walk around. I press my hand to my chest and feel my heart pound. I search the sky for that tipsy moon with the yellow dress and I call myself blessed for every brown blade of grass I find in this clumsy miracle of a path we walk and talk and sometimes fall down but for every hard block along the way I hope we never find a day that is even close to out of stock when it comes to things to live for.
Why Breaking Up Fucking Sucks-Andrea Gibson
Why Breaking Up Fucking Sucks; from the perspective of our tandem bicycle (still parked in my garage)-Andrea Gibson
The boy looking one, the one with the whimpy legs and the tough fear The one who never changes clothes The one who never locks the door The one always running from the neighbours for all they heard and all they couldnât hear The one who begged for change on the empty corner of her pocket heart The one who talked to himself so much, it was like he was trying to build a fan base out of all the dust and his lazy grace The one who got sick and couldnât pedal his own bike for an entire year So they bought me, hoping she could take them everywhere
The boy looking one who was always on the backseat, playing with the bell Heâs the only one still here Walks past me everyday Pretends I am a church with a cruel god and a foolish congregation, tells everyone he canât believe he ever prayed Sometimes he stops, stares at all my spokes and says âI wish sheâd done that more, spoke.â
Right now he is too fragile for me to argue the landscape of silence For me to tell him his streets were so loud she couldnât ambulance âI love youâ Through all his self looting scream he hardly noticed how often she held her pulse to her own ear to make sure she was still there
How do lovers hold up all the stars and not know space is the opposite of what they need when they canât breathe?
But my lord, you would not believe how their lungs could turn a hard peddled hill to a year they won To a year taken back from the triggers of their tongues To the bullets they took like pills when they were too tired to bleed
Every time they reached the top of the hill, the boy looking one would press his ear to the girlâs spine and listen for the moment when the saw of her breathe would cut down every tree that had ever grown a ring he hadnât shined for her hand.
This is where theyâd sing. My tassels twirling in their tender, threaded palms. This is where theyâd swear wheels could turn around anything. This is where theyâd ring the bell and follow each otherâs angels to the salt of their sweet lips. Where theyâd blush, new as strangers pressed in the palms of the same prayer.
Theyâd say âLet this be the day we start seeing what we saw when we first met. let the hands of that reaper clock unbury our fever, our alleyway walks our top down drive of the California coast with the elephant seals and Big Sir on fire Even just that first time we bought a shower curtain together. âThat day was plentyâ theyâd say âGive us back that kind of weatherâ theyâd say.
The boyâs face was still pressed against the girlâs spine The girl wears him like a crown All the way down the hill, towards home, the boy whispers âThank you for pedaling me. I know how heavy I can be.â The girl smiles like every leaf on every tree is a new leaf turning over. All night they hold each other like they will never again lose sight of what it was they first saw. I meant to tell them "What it was you first saw is the only thing thats real. What you first saw was love. Love is like two wheels. You are like two wheels."

Enough-Andrea Gibson
Last night I painted a purple tree on my bedroom wall I woke up this morning in a pile of leaves The color of a million different faces Thinking of that hand that planted the seed Of the family tree that grew us all And how each one of us Will one day fall back to the ground
This morning, I was listening to my heart pound Knowing with every single beat That a thousand other hearts were falling asleep forever On a day they never thought they would And I know there are tribes of aborigines That decide how and when theyâll die After a hundred years or so They walk into the desert alone Offer up their breath And within two minutes soar into a death As beautiful as their life And I was thinking IÂ Will probably never be enlightened enough to decide how I want to die
So this morning I decided how I want to live What I want to give What kind of song I want to sing Now Iâm no longer Looking at my days like theyâre a cup Calling them half empty or half full When theyâve always been enough Theyâll always be enough To fill me up If I stop thinking so much And start drinking them up Until I get so drunk and high on my days Iâll be walking up to strangers and saying things like âHey, I know Jesus was born in a manger But I woke at dawn today To watch the earthâs horizon Give birth to true rising sun of God And I canât stop singing hallelujahâ
Can you believe weâre here? Can you believe there are gods somewhere praying to us? I want to be that nut on a bus Whoâs really a prophet Telling everybody âSmoking is bad Stop it You might be an opera singer some day And how are you gonna hit the high notes?â I wanna live like those high notes That rise from the throats of old ladies When they see little babies Riding in shopping carts I wanna start somebodyâs heart like that Taking ninety years back So youâll have sworn You werenât born Until you saw me Planting roses In all the sidewalk cracks So when you trip Youâll fall in love With someone you thought you hated And now look at what that love has created
Look Thereâs a sky On her faded blue jeans With a flock of birds About to fly to my words And my next lineâs Gonna rhyme with her eyes And sheâll wink And Iâll think Iâm as beautiful as him
I wanna live my life Like itâs a little league game I donât care if I win Just wanna watch some little girl Get her very first hit Watch her father cheer so hard He spills his beer And decides to quit I wanna split some womanâs Tired eyes open Wake her with her own sunrise So she knows Thereâs reason to be hoping Sheâll say âThere are stingers in my heart But Iâm sure that Iâm a queenâ And that night Sheâll vow to swarm Until every angry car horn Is reborn a song Of let there be light Every angry war cry reborn A song of let there be life
I wanna build the timid teenage boy A microphone that will Echo his rhymes The same way They echo in his shower When heâs home alone
I wanna write poems In the tone Of your motherâs eyes When she whispered your name For the very first time Poems that will make you go home Pick up the phone And call her While I call mine to say âYou know those lines On the kitchen wall Where I grew Taller and taller and taller Put a couple more there wonât you? Cause Iâm growing up hereâ No longer looking at my days Like theyâre a cup Calling them enough From now on Theyâll be overflowing Since now Iâm knowing Itâs up to me To fill them up
