Peace Bringing Back Abundance
Artist: Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (French, 1755–1842)
Date: 1780
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Louvre Museum, Paris, France
Description
Wishing to gain admission to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1783 as a history painter, Vigée Le Brun presented this allegory as her reception piece. At the time, historical, mythological, religious, and allegorical subjects were considered superior to all others (portraiture, genre, landscape, and still life). With the American Revolution just ended, the artist’s choice was timely. The future is symbolized by Peace, on the right, who is ushering in Abundance with her cornucopia of fruit.
Returned to lender This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.

Wildly Expressive Paper Masks by Marianne Eriksen Scott-Hansen Radiate Emotion
L'homme de la rue (The man in the street) (1940). Paul Delvaux (Belgian, 1897-1994). Oil on canvas. Le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Liège.
The clothed man is reading the newspaper. His presence as a modern man in a mythical landscape peopled by naked women introduces a disturbing element into an already oneiric scene. The newspaper may only be a decoy set up to mislead the suspicions of the observer, for the man may be pretending to read the paper, awaiting the moment when he can ogle or hallucinate the female nudes that surround him.

Inside the Pitti Palace. Antonio Mario Aspettati (Italian, 1880-1949). Oil on canvas.
A large, vertical view of the Sala di Giove or Jupiter Room of the Galleria Palatina within the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. The artist’s delicate execution and subtle colors, along with the polished sunlight reflected into the large room, creates a luxurious and realistic setting for some of the finest art work to be seen in Italy. The glorious floor of the gallery - juxtaposed rectangular terracotta tiles and small square marble inserts - occupies the lower fifth of the picture while the carved, decorative cornice, lunettes and a portion of the framed painted ceiling take up nearly a third of the upper portion of the picture. This painting is a tour-de-force of artistic perspective.
The Gates -Â Christo and Jeanne-Claude
The Gates is a procession of 7,532 sixteen-foot-high frames from which hang rectangles of heavy nylon fabric, all saffron-colored and stationed at regular intervals (and some irregular, in respect for overhanging branches) along 23 miles of walkways through the 800 or so acres of Central Park.

Gwen John: I cannot imagine why my vision will have some value in the world. And yet I know it will.
Self-Portrait, 1902, by Gwen John
Gwendolen Mary John (22 June 1876 – 18 September 1939) was a Welsh artist who worked in France for most of her career. Her paintings, mainly portraits of anonymous female sitters, are rendered in a range of closely related tones. Although in her lifetime, John's work was overshadowed by that of her brother and her mentor and lover Auguste Rodin, awareness and esteem for John's artistic contributions has grown considerably since her death.
