Before I begin this, I would like to clarify, this is my own personal experience.

I am someone who realised that I was in a situation where I was being manipulated by multiple people, and I’m just giving my experience on how I was able to escape.

Step 1 - Self-awareness

First, recognise that you don’t deserve what you’re going through.

I was often told that girls that “look like me” deserve what I’m going through. That I was "built" for it. It took me a while to disconnect myself from the idea that I’m not an object, but a person, and I still haven’t. But the only way you can separate yourself from your abuser, while knowing you won’t go back, whether to that same abuser or seeking that same abuse, is by realising you’re being manipulated and abused. By realising you do not deserve what you’re going through.

After this, you have two options.

Option 1 - Tell someone

If you can, call the police. If you have a trusted adult, let them know about your situation. In the UK, if you are under the age of 16 and have been put in a situation where you have talked sexually or have sent pictures to someone online over the age of 18, an investigation will be opened. If you are between the ages of 16 and 17, your case will not be taken as seriously as others. Regardless, if you are a minor and are being sexually exploited, your legal guardians will be involved.

I ended up telling someone a lot later, I waited until I was 18 so my mother didn't get involved for my own personal reasons.

If you want your groomer persecuted, this would be a way to do it.

Unfortunately, this was not an option for me while I was being groomed.

Option 2 - Play the long game

If you are in a situation where calling the police is not an option, here is what I did.

Please bear in mind, if you sent pictures, you may never be able to get them taken down, and they will always exist somewhere. And the risk of them resurfacing, while unlikely - especially if you keep your face and other details hidden, exist.

I said things like “my mum has become cagey on my phone - she keeps taking it from me and it makes me keep doing this because what if she sees.”

I gave the person reasons why they shouldn’t talk to me out of fear of getting caught.

Then, I dragged out my actions, became a little more distant over time. Give them bursts of affection but then disappear for longer.

It started off small - a few hours. “Sorry I was gone for so long, I had to delete my app because my mother looked over my phone”.

Then, a whole day, come back “I think she suspects us, I’ve been trying to hide it but she saw [a message, a photo, some sort of incriminating evidence]”.

I made it an inconvenience for them because they didn’t know when they were going to see me next. And now I put them in a situation where, unlike before, talking to me could mean getting caught, where I had been so careful before.

I dragged this on for a few weeks until I eventually said “it’s not safe for me to do this anymore, I can’t stay any longer.”

I know for other’s it’s more complicated. If you are in a situation where you’re being forced to stay with threats like “if you go, I’ll post your pictures” even after trying to disconnect slowly, go to the police.

There is no way to know if that is an empty threat or not.

TL;DR

If I had the option, I would go to the police. But I slowly chipped away at our relationship and made up scenarios that would make them paranoid for getting caught until leaving them became a favourable idea in their eyes or they lost interest in me.

I don’t know if this was helpful, this was just my own personal experience. If you know someone who may be in this situation or you yourself are in this situation, I’ve changed the rules where you can put in my inbox your situation and I’ll see what I can do for you.

Alternatively, if you are in a conversation with a coach and are feeling uneasy, you can go into my DMs as well. Blocking is the first thing you should do, but if you need help getting to that point (no judgement) shoot me a DM, I’m going to be online more often now.
