Named after the fluffy white catkins and seeds, or the golden leaves and flowers, shared by a variety of willow species.

There a variety of deciduous plants known as 'willows:' some are trees, others shrubs. Generally, the family is characterized by fuzzy white-grey catkins; hanging yellow flowers; cottony seeds; and long, slender leaves which turn yellow in autumn. The color and appearance of bark varies widely depending on the species, and some willow shrubs grow pale, velvety hair on their branches.

The Canada Yew (Taxus canadensis) is an evergreen shrub with flat, dark green, needle-like leaves and thin, scaly brown bark. The bush is known for its clusters of bright red, berry-like cones containing a single seed each. Unlike it's English cousin, the Canada Yew prefers to sprawl outwards, rarely growing above 2m tall.
